AND if you fancy dipping in and don't like it, you don't fork out for the rest of the game!

I've always been tempted by the game and its interesting premise in the past, but haven't really wanted to fork out some serious notage on it. This is nicely bitesized.

The original was weird. I really didn't get the gameplay too well.

I think releasing this episodically is a great idea, but they need to get the pricing right. Under two quid per episode would be ok I reckon.

Under £2 an episode? That sounds incredibly optimistic. I'd say at least £5. More likely something like £5.99.

I'm basing this on the back of 3 songs for guitar hero costing more than £2.

I wish episodic gaming would be that cheap but I can't see it being so.

Looking forward to this, never played the original TBH but love survival horror so I'm in.

I am concerned about the 12 episodes though. how long between releasing episodes, or will they be released together? I don't really want to get into the game only to wait a week or two (or more) to continue. Also the cost of each episode, over 12 episodes that could add up to quite a lot unless each episode is really cheap.

@ mrmrc84

I hope they don't charge 5.99 per Episode no game is worth £72 quid!

£5.99 per episode would make it the best part of £72 for a 12 hour game, with no resale value. I doubt even SCEE think they can get away with that.

12 episodes @ £5.99 each would mean the game ends up costing £71.88, which assuming it isn't any long than, say, Resident Evil 4 or the original Siren makes it expensive. Ideally each episode needs to be under £4 to make it appealing unless of course this is a decent length game.

It should be like 99p for the first episode.

You know like those awful 1st editions of new Magazines with dinosaur parts to collect.
Then once you're hooked and have half a toe and 3 teeth they jack up the price!

I tried the Japanese Siren: New Translation demo awhile back and thought the game was pretty good but it's dark, very, very dark such that's it's difficult to see anything even if you turn the brightness up.

I don't think it would sell :(

Apparently in the ten years its been out, only 500,000 copies have ever been sold. Its criminal to the max.

Edit : I'd better add also, if it was miraculously remade exactly how it is, i reckon 80% of gamers wouldn't even make it to the end of Act I let alone complete it! Which is a shame because it has a truly beautiful ending. Its defiantly in my top 10 of all time.

Is this the first example of episodic gaming on a console or does HL2 count?

I liked the atmosphere of the first Siren game, but just couldnt play it. So it's a rehash of the first one, but playable.

Sounds good overall, price dependant of course.

EDIT: Re: Grim Fandango. My favourite point'n'click by a very very large margin. Such rediculously good writing and characters.

In terms of pricing (a matter which it's far too early to be discussing, but) do the mechanics exist, to enable publishers to offer incentive to return customers of episodic games, on PSN?

By this, I mean something like, as a practical example: You're in the Store, and you access the page featuring the episodic game that you've played the first "bit" of. In determining the price for subsequent ones, it would recognise that you've already bought the first bit, so it offers a small (non-stacking) reduction against what you'd otherwise pay for subsequent eps. The idea also being to encourage people to start from the beginning, and get the whole experience, in so doing.

Getting back to Siren, I think this game has great potential. :)

mischief has a very good point which I hadn't thought of, storage. How big will these 12 episodes be, I'm already running low on space. Mr Sony you with your installs and your bloody slow Blu ray drive, you should cough up for the HDD upgrade I'm gonna have to pay for!!!!!!!!

This is living my arse!

Is it me, or are we finally starting to see an increase in the number of decent (dare I say it AAA) games being release for the PS3......Uncharted, GTA, MGS and now this....all in the space of 8months.

Its taken the devs. a while, but finally it looks like there are games out there that make me feel I purchased a decent console

Tomb Raider Anniversary was released as an attempted episodic, but it was more the game split into chunks so they could get away with it as a download. They always talked about going episodic though. It's a good idea if the game suits it and it is priced right.

From what I hear you get three episodes at a time, so we may well be paying £10-£15 per episode pack £40-£60 total

EDIT silly me, it seems that you might indeed be paying for 1 episode at a time, I based my comment on having read previews mentioning playing through three episodes instead of just one

Episodic games are a good idea, as long as they're not HL2 style "episodes" where you get an hour-long game time every 2 years.

I'm not sure about this remake though, namely split screen when you're jacking. Half the reason sight jacking was such a brilliant gameplay idea was that while you were jacking you couldn't see your own surroundings, which made it very tense.

I'll never forget the time I was exploring in Sightjack mode only to come across a shibito 10 feet away who was running angrily towards my helpless self. One of my all-time scariest videogame moments!
