SingStar: Past, Present and Future Article

PlayStation 3 PlayStation 2 Article by Tom Bramwell

Given the game's broad appeal though (my mum has played SingStar, and she can't even make a new folder in Windows XP), it's no surprise to hear Ranyard talking about the inclusiveness of new features. "From some of our really rough stats, about 80 per cent of people playing SingStar are in a social experience. They've got friends round, or family, or whatever," he says. "But that means there are 20 per cent who perhaps aren't, at that time. And actually, 20 per cent of SingStar users is quite a lot of people, so catering to that experience is a totally reasonable thing that we'd consider."

As he says this, I'm reminded of my personal remorse at the deletion of friend-of-Eurogamer Keza MacDonald's X-rated version of "Suddenly I See", and the loss of my own emotional rendition of "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia. Ranyard points out that there's a ratings element to that - the games have a relatively low 12+ PEGI designation to hit, and sometimes go to 3+ - so I ask whether it's worth putting out a one-off "grown-ups" SingStar to give us all an avenue into slightly less family-friendly songs. And behaviour. "As the community grows, there may be a time when we have sub-communities," he speculates. "At the other end of the spectrum, maybe there's a sub-community for younger players."

And despite a few teething problems with the Store when it launched (many speculate it was the reason the game, originally a PS3 launch title, took so long to arrive), London Studio now embraces PlayStation Network as much as the next developer, even if the next developer is Media Molecule. "The concept of being online [or not] is almost irrelevant," Ranyard points out, citing the growth of sites like Facebook alongside games like LittleBigPlanet. "Things like that are informing us about where we're going." Global online leaderboards seems like an obvious step.

Band-specific releases, like SingStar ABBA, have been backed up by song packs on the SingStore. There's a lot more to come in 2009, but we'd be shot if we told you.

There are also now over 650 songs on SingStore, but despite the huge number, and Ranyard's eagerness to talk about scaling up or down for people of different age groups and singing ability, there have been accusations of a narrow focus. When a list of the top ten best-selling songs was published recently, the first comment on the Guardian's write-up said: "all that's on the SingStore is eighties pop, obscure Euro hits you've never heard of, and mind-numbingly dull commercial indie". Does the SingStore have a problem with variety?

"Personally, I don't think there's a problem with variety," Ranyard says. "Eighties pop? You know, the biggest-downloaded song is Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'... I've been in bands and all sorts back in my younger days, and I think one thing that SingStar does really well is highlight great songs... I didn't like [Total Eclipse of the Heart] when it came out, because I was a punk, but I love doing it now because it's a great song."

So how are songs chosen, then, and how do they end up on SingStore? "We have evaluation criteria, so if a song's got a two-minute instrumental in the middle, it's perhaps not a great SingStar song. It's really simple things like that... But having said that, sometimes the artist and the song are so loved by the fanbase that you might be forgiving of one or two of those things because it's an absolute classic." As for who actually picks the songs, there are offices in places like Spain, Portugal and Germany who submit wishlists. "We don't necessarily have one place that picks all the songs," says Ranyard. "We tend to use marketing departments, for example, because they obviously know what their territory wants, what consumers want."

Will they ever top SingStar Singalong With Disney? Yes. Do a Ben Folds version. And Alcazar.

Once a song's decided, it needs to be licensed, and that's a complicated process that takes up to 12 weeks for the team of five people whose job it is to sort it all out. "Lots of rights are owned by different people and you can only use something when you've cleared all those rights," says Ranyard. "For example, if a song's written by three or four people, each person could be represented by a different company."

Getting it into the game happens at London Studio. "We've got a team of musicians who sit and listen to the songs and work out the melody that you're going to sing, and work it so the lyrics appear at the right time, which is a gameplay thing but we hire musicians to do that - so each one is crafted by human hands and ears, if you like."

Does this mean my trusty old PS2 won't be supported by Singstar any longer? I don't want a PS3 just yet..

Singstar is a great laugh...check out my vids plz

"...SingStar Extras where you can buy, or get for free, other things than just songs, so that's where you might buy features in the future, or you might get the features for free."

Home items? Display screens for my videos for us in my apartment? I think this is a strong possibility since quite a few of the newly announced Singstar trophies include the unlocking of a Home Item!!

Damn, that is an almost page-breakingly long list of related games. It's always the games that interest me the least that turn out to be phenomenally successful. Guess that's why I'm a PC gamer :D

i'm quite glad that MS brought out Lips as prior to all this news (bar the singstore...and now the wireless mics) there hasn't been much change of singstar over the years...such a big singstar fan myself but feel like it's gotten a bit stale as of late and small things like the voice activation and up coming secret updates sound great

also a request to put some volume 3 songs up on the store *cough*billiejean*cough*

Almost insightful about the licensing process. Doesn't mention those labels (I'm looking at you UMG) and artists that won't co-operate but ho-hum.

Could have asked when the trophies will go live as well...

It's on PS2, but you can use the disc on the PS3 if you already have Singstar PS3.

I only purchased SingStar yesterday for the first time, with the lovely new wireless microphones.

My only disappointment is the rather sad list of songs available. The above summary is v accurate. Personally I was hoping to frolic around on the sofa in my wedding dress singing Like A Virgin, only to be shocked by the revelation that there's no Madge content whatsoever!

Agree about the songs - could be far more varied - see guitar hero and rock band for some fairly far out there stuff. Generally, it's a great game and giving me more of a laugh and fun time than most games - though i must admit has been taken over by rock band over recent months.

I have given up on SingStar the moment Rock Band made its debut. Not only does it provide a more interesting catalogue for MY taste, it also seems so much more value for money. Not to mention the variety and depth of game modes.

I'd be happy to see an open standard format for music game songs as mentioned in the article, but I honestly can't see that happening. Ever. :(

It would be nice to be able to buy a song once and then have it available on multiple games. Seems quite unlikely really, but what can you do? Had a good few years with Singstar during University, but I'm probably going to be investing in Lips at some point. Not least because I don't have a PS3 at present, but the impending microphone compatibility with Rock Band is a very tantalising prospect.

Love Singstar, only problem is that you can guarantee that any session results in waking up the next day with a blinding hangover, is like playing Singstar goes hand in hand with copious amounts of rum, Jack Daniels and beer.

after reading the article there is still one aspect of the game that isn't there. He stated that there was people in three European countries that help determine the songs in the store. As stated nobody in the US is helping with the songs so you wonder why the song choice is Euro and indie dominated. The game would take off like guitar hero and rock band with more US songs in it. Hard to believe that if those two games can get some of the best songs ever and singstar can't. Just seems like that Sony is missing out on opportunity in the US with this game with the success of guitar hero and rock band.

The reason the mics have taken two years is they were originallly supposed to be bluetooth but they couldn't get it working so wussed out and went usb.

Having never tried SingStar for PS3 - I really fancy getting a copy however I am totally confused. Do all the song packs contain the main game or do you have to buy the original game and then these are simply add on songs?

@Scrumhalf: you can't install songs from discs onto your HDD (much as we have all asked for that again and again and again), so you buy the disc you like the most then download everything else.

Features I want from singstar:

* Ability to export recorded clips and audio to usb/external harddrive
* Ability to have the option to upload recorded clips and audio to youtube instead of the singstar community.
* When a new singstar game comes out. All the tracks from that release appear in the singstore from day 1.
* Ability to sing to your own mp3's on the ps3 harddrive/external device
* Ability to queue up a number of songs so you don't have to select after every song.
