Silent Hill Origins Preview

PSP Preview by Rob Fahey

"...I'm here for you. See?"

As such, the team doesn't feel that the PSP is a limiting platform - but it's certainly one that brings unique challenges. Previously, Silent Hill games relayed a lot of information to the player through rumble or audio feedback. Neither of those channels can be relied upon on the PSP, so now the game uses subtle visual cues in their place. The heart-beat vibrations which indicated low health are replaced by a red pulsing glow at the screen edges, while the radio noise which scared the crap out of a generation of videogamers by telling us when enemies are nearby has been supplemented with a cool, flickery, aged-film effect on screen.

Moreover, while the team would love for everyone to experience the game curled up in their bed in the dark, with the sound up full, they know that not everyone plays handheld games like that. Silent Hill has traditionally been a very dark game, which wouldn't work terribly well for those playing outdoors or on brightly lit public transport. For those people, the team has created a gamma slider entirely independent of the PSP's own brightness controls, which should mean that everyone can set the screen to a level which they can see easily.

In pure technical terms, Silent Hill Origins is something of a marvel. It looks better than its predecessors on the PlayStation 2, with detailed player and monster models, gorgeously realised environments and lovely atmospheric effects on the thick, realistic fog which pervades the town. Of particular note is the player's torch, which casts fully realistic shadows off every object in the world - an amazing achievement given the PSP's graphics power. This is especially eerie when fighting enemies, as their huge shadows are projected onto the walls behind them while you bludgeon them into submission.

The Otherworld - unpleasant, we'll grant you, but still preferable to most kitchens and bathrooms in student flats.

In audio terms, too, Origins looks set to live up to the high standards set by its predecessors. One of the only members of Team Silent to be fully involved in Origins' development is legendary composer Akira Yamaoka, whose compositions have given the previous games (and indeed the movie) much of their atmosphere. He wrote the full soundtrack for Origins, and it is backed up with some superb sound direction which emphasises uneasy, discordant noise in different parts of the game we visited, fully leveraging the possibilities of using sound to make the player very, very uncomfortable with the environment.

Memories of Alessa

All of which is, I'm absolutely delighted to report, vastly more positive than I could ever have dared to expect. On all of those fronts, the dedication of the team to respecting the Silent Hill formula is paying off in spades, and the game we got to play in Portsmouth is unquestionably a fine Silent Hill game in almost every regard. Indeed, on the basis of gameplay and atmosphere alone, Origins seems far more comfortable with its place in the franchise than the retrofitted spin-off Silent Hill 4 was - a great achievement given that it has been entirely crafted by an external team.

There remains, however, one vast, looming question - one which cannot be answered by half an hour of playtime. Silent Hill lives or dies, to a large extent, on the basis of its story and characters. While Origins is confirmed to fit in a "watertight" way with the Silent Hill canon, checked and double checked past Team Silent's own Necronomicon of storyline, that's no actual guarantee of a compelling ride through the game's ten hours.

The lengths the undead will go to to try and find a nice orthopaedic bed...

However, the noises coming out of the team in Portsmouth on this front are nothing if not encouraging. Set seven years before the events of the first Silent Hill (fans of the series may go "ohhhh!" at this point, if you wish), the game explores what happened to the crucial character of Alessa before the first game - and the protagonist, Travis, also seems to be a complex character, whose own private demons are likely to be behind his entanglement in the whole mess.

More importantly than simple plot details, however, Oertel, Simmons and the rest of the design team seem to keenly understand how Silent Hill works. Simmons, with whom the storytelling responsibility lies, reels off Team Silent's favoured influences - David Lynch, Jacob's Ladder, Stephen King, and the list goes on - and opines that while the British team may bring a slightly different flavour to the game, the British sense for horror and storytelling is surprisingly close to Japanese sensibilities in many ways.

His goal, he says, was to combine Silent Hill 1's cult story with Silent Hill 2's emotional, personal journey - a match which sounds like music to our ears. Strange, discordant music, filled with uncomfortable trills and difficult sounds; the sort of music Akira Yamaoka uses to bring a sad, melancholy little town in the American mid-west to life in a haunting, tragic way. Some doubts may linger, but by and large we're trapped in the dream all over again. Something is calling us back to Silent Hill - and we can't wait for our next visit.

Yipee! Yeah that the way to go!

Was initially worried about the action elements but glad that they are taking it in the direction its going now, making a good proper use of the handheld format and agree that it should make for a more scary and creepy experience if properly implemented.

Looking forward to it more after reading this article.

This game is not developed by Team Silent??

In fact I don't think it's developed in any of Konami's Japanese based game studios? So I am a bit worried!

Should just have finished RE4 Wii when this comes out... what scary, scary fun.

One query - Is Silent Hill classed as a system seller, killer app or is it a bit niche?

Sounds like passing the game to a fresh new developer may have really paid off. Here's hoping.

Actually sounds quite good :) Pleasently suprised. Very cool that they're taking it right back to the beginning and actually having you be the one who rescues Alessa from the fire.

Goffee - Depends who you're talking to. I know about half a dozen people who'll buy whichever next-gen system gets Silent Hill 5, no questions asked. I don't think it's quite as massive a system seller as the likes of Halo or MGS, but it's got a dedicated audience for whom it's a massively important franchise.

If Origins turns out to be as good as it looks right now, I expect it'll sell a fair number of PSPs, too.

Am I the only one really really worried by the player being able to trigger otherworld transitions at will? NVM that the mechanic seems very similar to Constantine's a very large part of the creepiness in the first three titles for was that one could be doing anything and suddenly have your character freak out on you the music and sirens kick up and you're in hell. Being so braced for it that you have to decided when you wnat to go to hell seems to be very very unscary.

Cool, sounds very promising.

I still think that bit in SH1 when you go in the lift of the hospital and, after ages of finding nothing on all four floors, a '5' has appeared in the lift's floor options only to reveal your first proper entry to the otherworld, is one of the most affecting pieces of entertainment I've ever had the 'pleasure' to engage with.

Hopefully this will bring some more moments like that.

Nice preview too.

I think they ought to at least be crawling with maggots.

Otherwise I'll have to settle for the game.

As a fan of Silent Hill, I am hoping that this game will not be fumbled by the guys.

A non Team Silent version of Silent Hill does give me the fear but I am willing to put that to one side and keep my fingers crossed for a home console to portable console transition as perfect as Metal Gear Solild:Portable Ops.

BTW I think the pants weather we are having in "sunny Pompey" is down to the horror that is SH. Please be good, the first 3 were brill, 4th not so much.

I'd argue that Silent Hill is one of the few games which HAS gone in a new and exciting direction with each iteration. While retaining the same core concepts and aesthetic, SH1, 2, 3 and 4 are all notable simply for how uniquely different they are - the only pair which are really similar are Silent Hill 1 and 3, but even those take remarkably different approaches to the material.

It's certainly somewhat unfair to accuse the series of failing to evolve in new directions.

Was a little hesitant about any kind of new PSP Silent Hill after the non-event that was Experience. But, hand in the air, I'll admit I'm coming round to the idea.

I'm a big fan of Silent Hill, have been since seeing the original demoed at the spring '98 ECTS. 0rigins (how it should be spelt) created nothing but ripples of fear on the SH forums I subscribe to, and it wasn't the good kind of fear. Dedicated fans shuddered at the thought of 'foreigners' developing it and, for a long while, I firmly believe our fears were justified.
Boards were full of negative posts, cynical fans everywhere (including myself) demanding to be given proof that it wasn't a big mistake. And when the first footage, screenshots and documentation did reach the Silent Hill masses, it was greeted with nothing more than ambivalence (look it up).
The majority felt that it just wasn't up to scratch, a title not really worthy of the name. I think it was the fact the game was being flaunted as 'one of the series' that fans like me didn't like. If it was classed as a niche title like the Silent Hill Play Novel, I'm sure the reaction wouldn't have been so 'anti'.

However, that was a year ago, and clearly things have changed since then. Fans are still wary, but the majority I mentioned is slowly shrinking to become the minority.

Silent Hill 0rigins is really starting to look like it might actually deliver the goods. The quote from the preview...

"His goal, he says, was to combine Silent Hill 1's cult story with Silent Hill 2's emotional, personal journey..."

...along with the torrent of other information available now certainly fills me with a degree of hope.

Here's to keeping my fingers crossed.

I was a bit dubious about it coming to the PSP platform - but the new Portsmouth development team seam to have done their research - and Origins finally looks to be heading in the right direction.

Here's looking forward to some creepy late nights in bed with my PSP*.

*In a non weird way obviously.
