I'm too scared to play these games. Really want to play SH2, but just can't. I was the same with Resident Evil until number 4. I'm a wimp.
This looks OK. Don't fancy its chances much though.

can't wait - love the whole series. The chance to play this in bed at night is an exciting prospect. I bet my wife won't think so though ;)

HarryPalmer: You REALLY shouldn't play the Project Zero games, then. Absolutely fantastic games (especially the second) but they're the scariest games I've ever played.

One of the more evasive developer interviews I've read. "How are you improving the combat" - "We're making it better."

I'm gutted they got rid of the barricade mechanic.

If it's not produced by Team Silent it's not a Silent Hill game - simple as.

Wired protocol - not harsh, it's just a fact. We did an interview back in 2004 with the team behind The Room, and it transpired that the game was originally not designed as a Silent Hill game at all, but a separate game called Room 302. Only late in development was the Silent Hill name attached.

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?art...

Quote: "Originally this development was started from what we named Room 302, rather than Silent Hill, so the original concept wasn't from Silent Hill." Presumably that was to give the game a better chance commercially? He nods. "We started off with the title Room 302, but if the Silent Hill didn't exist then we still had the idea of Room 302. Without Silent Hill we didn't have this title, but because we did have Silent Hill we wanted to have something different, but it's kind of a mixture of ideas."

I ordered the Silent hill 2 directors cut from Amazon yesterday on PS2, I loved that game when if first came out and got the urge to replay it the other day. I've played all the games in the series but I got Silent hill4 a few weeks ago on Xbox and it's not as good as the others so far, will continue on as I hear the story isn't bad once you get into it.

in order from best to worst

Silent hill
Silent hill2
Silent hill 3
Silent hill 4

I see a pattern...

I also ordered Project zero 3 for a fiver at Amazon can't wait to play it as the first two were ace.

Pessimistic prediction-

The camera will be dodgy, the combat will be flat but tolerable, the narrative and world will be immersive as per the usual and the engine powering this beastie will be top-notch. Puzzles will be of the sliding-blocks-on-a-grid or square-peg-square-hole variety. 6/10 or 7/10, take your pick.

I think its more this order

Silent Hill 1
Silent hill 3
SH 2
Sh 4

:P

1 & 3 are almost on par for me because they follow the same story...

after playing X-Men legends 2 and a bit of MGS recently, this game looks like another one that you will have to play in total darkness, away from any light source if you want to stand a hope in hell of seeing whats going on.

Lucky its not got a summer release then, i suppose.

I want to see what Konami have done to Silent hill 5, I wonder if they've copied RE4 and gone for a more fluid control scheme and over the shoulder cam.

I hope they don't turn Silent hill 5 into a action game like RE4... I like the fact that the characters are pretty average and can't fight very well adds much needed vulnerability to a game like this.

Yeah I heard three followed on from one but for some reason I didn't really like it that much. I rate one as the best as it's just so dam freeky and started the whole thing off, but 2 was probably my favourite in terms of atmosphere, enemies and main character.

Pyramid head is the scariest character ever created in a game...

No. I thought they were great, and found the 3rd person bludgeoning rather tired by comparison.

Yup. It was, ironically, the SH bits that ruined The Room.

No, you're not the only one.

I mean, there you are looking around in your room, checking stuff out, everything's quiet and normal. In the moment of calm you glance toward theWHAT THE FUCK UPSIDE DOWN HEAD FLOATING UPWARDS PAST THE WINDOW IN COMPLETE SILENCE AHHH!

Also, spying on your cute neighbour.

I liked that game. Just too bad there's no town to explore.

I'm pretty much the same as you HarryPalmer. Love the Resi games but they take me forever to complete because I'm too scared. Haven't even got round to the SH series. I tried Project Zero for a bit but it's a bit shit I think.

2½ short years is more like it (2004-09-17) ;)

SH2 is far and away the finest in the series - a masterstroke of suspenseful storytelling. SH1 and 3 are good too - I find 1 particularly scary. I always have that fearful feeling, but still force myself on - part of the joy of a SH game.

SH4 is not SH at all, it's awful.

It's true that the best bits of The Room were actually the first person bits where you're wandering around your apartment. As soon as it went into third person mode it was less interesting - mainly because it was so heavily combat focused, with less emphasis on figuring out what to do.

And then having to repeat all the locations....that was a lazy design decision.

You forgot - Silent Hill Experience - for the PSP.
Its a multimedia title (Graphic Novella & Akira Music)
(Like the MGS Graphic Novel on PSP also)

So it goes:

SH 1, 2, 3, 4, SH E (PSP) and soon SH O (PSP)

I don't have high hopes for this really. But, it might get me playing my PSP again. Only thing I use it for is Silent Hill experience thing anyway.

I personally don't agree that the series is in decline. The fact that Silent Hill 4 wasn't originally supposed to be a SH game shows that it was just a bad marketing judgement not Team Silent losing their touch. Silent Hill 1 to 3 were absolutly superb games and though SH4 was far from perfect, it still was pretty good and the story was incredibly good. I think if it didn't have the Silent Hill name it would have become a cult hit IMO.

But Silent Hill Origins will give me somthing to work through before SH5 comes out, and the good thing is that its not being produced by Team Silent...meaning they can concentrate on Silent Hill 5 while we play this one. Good stuff!

Man, I just realised I'm going to have to get a PSP now, sometime in the future. I can't miss a SH game. :(

Well, at least I'll wait till they're 50 euros on Ebay. ...Or I hope they make a PS2 port. Yeah, that'd be great.

Good to see that it's finally looking like a Silent Hill game. In fact these are the first screen shots i've seen of the game that didn't leave me feeling thoroughly unimpressed/disappointed. I'm still not a hundred percent sure about the game, but it's definitely a huge improvement upon previous showings.

And for what it's worth, i have to agree with the people who'd place Silent Hill 2 as the best in the series. I still think it would have made a much better script for the movie. I actually really liked the movie, but i think the story of the second game would have worked better for people who weren't already fans of the games.
