Silent Hill 2 movie confirmed

Says Gans, spookily.

Cristophe Gans has told French Magazine DVDrama that work on a second Silent Hill film is well under way, and he promises that it will remedy all of the problems of the first picture.

That said, while he's keen to revisit his role as director of the film, alongside writer Roger Avary, he can't make any promises due to his current involvement in another big-screen videogame adaptation - Onimusha.

"There will indeed be a Silent Hill 2 and it is officially ordered and is already well under way. Once he has finished his adaptation of Driver, Roger Avary will be [working on the script], helped by his friend Neil Gaiman."

British author Gaiman's actual contribution to the project is still rather doubtful, stating on his blog that fans' emails asking about his involvement were the first he'd heard of it.

"I'm afraid that I don't think I am - I mean, it's the first thing I've ever heard of it, and I'm sure that if they make a sequel Roger would want to write it himself."

The first film, released earlier this year, tells the story of Rose DaSilva, a mother who sets out to investigate the mysterious Silent Hill, a town her daughter calls to in her sleep. It received mixed reviews, but certainly shows more potential than other recent videogame to big-screen adaptations.

It'd be great if Gaiman was involved somehow.

More than anything, though, I want a remake of the second game.

Perosnally I loved the first movie. I thought it brilliantely captured the atmosphere of the games although there was something missing with regard to the characters ....
  • jiveguy #3 5 years ago

Probably an input for a gamepad.

I have to say SH was the best videogame movie I ever saw. It did tail away a bit to the end, sure, but I loved the atmosphere, and all the little references. Set design was top notch; pissed all over Resi 2 from a great height, the town actually looked like Silent Hill. Anyways, I'd look forward to film 2.

I really hoped for this, as I loved the first movie. I thought that it really captured the spirit of silent hill, while trying to explain stuff that happens there in an intelligent manner (like the sirens for example)

I read somewhere, on this vast internet, that the second film is about Sean Bean receiving letters from Rose. While it is obviously pure speculation at this stage, given that Gans is looking for a script writer - it would tie nicely into both a sequel to the first film while giving more than a passing nod to the second game...

It definitely captured the atmosphere of the game, but the acting was godawful. And Sean Bean's accent.... ugh
  • alimokrane #7 5 years ago

    @ZuluHero

letters from Rose?? .... Oh dear god it sound like Silent Hill 4 in a way.... please no! I didnt like Silent Hill 4 one bit. They dont have to continue the story of the first one now do they ? they could come up with a new story.

    Bugger films, make games!
  • Steroyd #9 5 years ago

    Hell yeah.

Although ashamedly i've never played a Silent Hill game.

That Silent Hill Trilogy for £40 in HMV is just screaming for me to buy it, and hopefully Silent Hill 1 makes it onto the PSN Network sometime in the near future.

    doom > silenthill

sh movie was like japanese horror that went through mc donald
  • alimokrane #11 5 years ago

Silent Hill Trilogy at £40 is a bargain in your books ? you can get all three game separately at a much cheaper price if you know where to shop.

    This is for PS2 (SH2,3 and 4) for £30

video game movies should be banned, and vice versa.

Yes. I for one also see the logic in basing my entertainment choices around illiterate comments on internet message boards.

Bah, one of the biggest dissapointments of the year for me, I'm not looking forward to this at all

    1.50 PSP for the w1n says I
  • Mr_Brown #18 5 years ago

Well in wouldn't make sense to continue the storyt of the first...silent hill doesn't do that. Well not directly, the closest to do that was Silent Hill 3. But, I have to say the film was pretty good. I had mixed feelings about it, it definatly captured the atmosphere of the game, but it was the story that left it lacking. If they can get the original writers to get some feedback or even better, just make a film version of Silent Hill 2 (which would be the best thing ever). I've no doubt the director could do it. Heres hoping anyway!
  • Blerk #19 5 years ago

It's not bad as such, just not really very Silent Hill. Treat it as a stand-alone horror game with a faint SH connection and you'll probably quite like it. Except for those bloody ghosts.
  • Canadian_Mike #20 5 years ago

Having worked on the VFX for the original film i'm glad to see some of you really enjoyed it.

Cristophe is a pretty good guy too. Wonder if we'll see any of Pt2 here at work again.
  • DanWhitehead #21 5 years ago

I liked the bit when the bad lady got barbed wire up her mimsy.
  • Mr_Brown #22 5 years ago

Yeah if your a Silent Hill fan you will enjoy it. Its just not really based in Silent Hill and as already mentioned it is an off shoot of Silent Hill. Though i'm pretty sure one of the tunnels does take you to Silent Hill breifly.

Other than that if its the repetition (having to go through the worlds twice is a pain at the end) and escorting people about which is what ruined it for me. Its certainly worth £10 though I guess.
  • kmittal82 #23 5 years ago

I thought the first film was excellent. Really recreates the atmosphere of the game. One of the best game to movie films I have seen.
  • Fyzzu #24 5 years ago

I really liked Silent Hill, and I wasn't expecting to, especially having not played any of the games (don't shoot me). Doom, on the other hand, was complete and total cack.
  • Sko #25 5 years ago

Yeah, I enjoyed SH too. Can't understand how anyone could think that shitpile Doom was better.
  • in5ane #26 5 years ago

I thought the first film was just a touch too boring, and the ending was all over the place really. It did a good job of recreating the game's atmosphere, but that just reminded me I had more fun playing the game than watching the movie :)

I think I'll wait the five years it takes for this to be on Channel 4.
  • Fatallyflawed #27 5 years ago

the worst thing about it was Sean Bean and his awful american accent coupled with his pointless charactor
  • DanWhitehead #28 5 years ago

I believe Avary's screenplay originally had only female lead characters, but the studio insisted there had to be some blokes - hence the rather pointless Sean Bean character and his policeman chum.
  • Inquisitor #29 5 years ago

Really enjoyed the atmosphere of the film. The plot was a bit off though, and I'd rather they just took out that barbed wire part, it was just overly silly.

Liked it enough to get the DVD though, and its certainly the best game to movie adaptation yet.
  • makaveli789 #30 5 years ago

    @Inquisitor

Any hidden goodies on the DVD, deleted scenes and such?
  • YourMessageHere #31 5 years ago

Silent Hill film was pretty good as films go, and head and shoulders above all other films of games. Acting wasn't that bad.

The film of Doom was utterly horrific, apart from two things: The first person bit, which was maybe 4 mins long but should have lasted for the entire film, and the design of the BFG. Otherwise, a total shitpile from start to finish; I suppose it might be barely acceptable if it were tied into a new game, but trying to bask in Doom's reflected glory is just vampiric and demeaning.
  • Inquisitor #32 5 years ago

Nothing too great on the DVD in terms of extras. Theres a good 'making of feature' though.
  • Blerk #33 5 years ago

The first movie is currently £5.99 on DVD from Play, btw.
  • Blerk #34 5 years ago

They're a pain in the arse. They follow you from room to room and you can't kill them (well, you can stop them with a particular object, of which there are about five in the entire game). Not a game-killer, but hugely irritating as it makes proper exploration difficult 'cos you're constantly pegging it, Benny Hill-style.

Heh heh - Konami will be on the phone in a minute!
