Sierra closing 21 game servers News

PC News by Robert Purchese

8 October, 2008

Sierra/Vivendi plans to close 21 game servers on 1st November.

Fortunately, these all belong to old titles not yet old enough to be considered retro-cool like stupid plastic sunglasses.

The Sierra site gave no reason for the closures; it could be something to do with the Activision Blizzard merger, or just be because these games are knocking on a bit now.

There's some fond memories there, though.

  • Alien vs Predator 2
  • Arcanum
  • Caesar IV
  • Dark Reign 2
  • Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
  • Empire Earth
  • Empire Earth 2
  • Empire Earth: Age of Conquest
  • Ground Control
  • Ground Control2
  • Homeworld
  • Homeworld: Cataclysm
  • Nolf 2
  • Red Baron
  • Sanity
  • Star Trek: Armada
  • SWAT3: EE
  • SWAT3: GOTY
  • The Incredible Machine
  • Tribes 2
  • Vampire

Red Baron?? Not the original, shirley?

Shame about Tribes 2, but there are a few servers out there run by die-hard fans.

Can't people host their own independent servers for all these games though?

I thought Tribes 2 was taken offline years ago? That's why I stopped playing.

Tribes 2 is mainly a multiplayer game right? Bet they don't stop selling it in the budget ranges. That's the most annoying thing about buying budget PC Games these days - you go for the multiplayer and whoops! Nothing there. Looking at you Black & White.

Homeworld and Tribes. If some freak of disaster made it so those were the only two games left in the world, I'd still play games more than talk to people.

Pretty much only multiplayer, one of the best games ever IMO. Massive games, vehicles, customisable armour sets. Fantastic.

I noticed Gamestation selling copies of Auto Assault for £5 each a few weeks ago. Good luck finding any use wih those other than coasters.

The local Game here in Oslo has Asheron's Call 2 as part of their PC software sale. Well, I guess the manual is a fancy read. "Oh, if only the servers hadn't been turned off two years ago, I could have been playing drums in a band". Which was the second coolest part of that game. (The coolest was that you were playing the monster races from AC1.)

Surely there are independent servers for most these games as jack said? Wait, I get it, they host the master servers. Without those playing online would be a bit of a pain.

I was amazed to still find people playing Doom and Command % Conquer when I looked a few weeks ago.

It does suck though that they are happy to sell these games in budget ranges yet no longer support them online.
