Interesting. I'm a big fan of Civ on the PC and to be honest, the version of this that has me most interested is the DS version. Do the same sort of comments apply? Even a version of the first game on the DS would be absolute gaming bliss for me, but I do hope it isn't dumbed down too much.

This has filled me with anticipation and trepidation. It would seem that the 'Civ Lite' fear has come to pass. I so want this to be good, but I reckon I am going to fall in the disappointed camp. A small map? No need for diplomacy? The end -game arrives quickly and is over in 20 turns? I still have hope but I'm steeling myself for a let-down.

Eek! Sounds a little dubious to me to be honest. I'm no Civ geekhead know it all, but it seems they may have just gone a tad overboard on the simplification here. Anyhow, hope it's good!

Killerbee,

The DS and next gen version use the same AI and ruleset engine. The difference is in the presentation.

The only part of CivRev I can see that is worth having is the quick MP games. I hope that they include a quick mode in Civ 5 which is basically the stripped down rules of Civ Rev. Being able to play a 4 - 6 player Civ MP game in one evening will be lovely.

Stripping away the depth and strategy in SP will make the game pretty dull and repetitive I think. Civs strengths have always been in it's depth, but that depth translates to MP games that take days of total gaming hours and rarely have I actually finished one.

I've never played a Civ game and i absolutely detest RTSs (except for Starcraft for some odd reason) but i'm really interested in this, sounds really fun!

@ps3owner - nice analogy. This sounds good to me. I love an epic game of CivTrad, but do like the idea of a short-form streamlined version too.

I have Civ the Board game at home and this sounds like a computerised version of it.

Which is a very good thing, though expect to hate your friends for a few days after you play against each other. cos if it really does play the same way as the board game it gets very competative. Some of my friends refuse to play the board game against surtain other friends.

Been playing the DS version too - can confirm it's largely very similar to the Big Boy versions. Major differences are aesthetic/interface ones.

@Moz: I doubt this will be the game of the board game, as I've got the board game too and it's even more complicated than actual Civ!

@reality_cheque once you've played it a couple of times it's far simplar then the comp game.

While i'm not expecting rev to be an exact replica of the board game the pace and competitivness sound very similar. we play through the board game using advance rules in about 4 hours which is a little longer then a what a game of rev would appear to take but then you spend alot of time faffing about find the right piece and looking through decks of cards in the board game.

Civ on PC is too slow, and frankly a micromanagement hell. I've waited for CivRev a lot, because I like the idea of guiding a civilization through the ages, but this sounds too simple and gamey. I didn't really want simple, just streamlined.

Guess we'll see soon enough...

Superb writing. One of the most enjoyable reads on here for some time. Informative but in a very pleasant way. Kinda like a film that's over before you know it simply because it was very good.

Very undecided about this. I loved Civ to bits and actually enjoyed the micromanagement and long-term tech achievements. However, it would be nice to play a whole game in less than a whole evening ;)

Oooh, them's fighting talk R_C!

It's Civ for consoles - there's no way they could keep the complexity of the PC game in there. From the preview it sounds like Firaxis have managed to kepe the core gameplay and port it to a new audience. Us old Civ hands will not find it replacing an epic game on a huge world but the MP sounds delish and I can't wait to get stuck into that.

PS - where' my turn?

i think this is going to be one of those games that if you "get it" then there will be hours of multiplayer fun to be had.

Sound really good to me and i've been a Civ player since the beginning.

Anyone interested in proper Civilisation most likely has the PC/Mac version and will stick to that. Can't see this doing well even if it is dumbed down for the masses.

Too bad they aren't including the console version and the micromanagement version in 1 package. I love Civ myself, but I'm a little hesitant on this one.

This looks like some crazy multiplayer fun. A damn shame there's no PC version as, while I love Civ4, this would just be better for playing with mates.

@wowami: There is a free colonization game at http://www.freecol.org/ although I couldn't hear any music while playing it (the cheesy colonization music was the highlight of the game for me). Also it has bugs, but that's just like the original game ;-)

I'm looking forward to this, even while I'm going to miss the micromanagement of the PC-games. But CIV lite to play over XBL would be great!
