Shivering Isles 360 gets new achievements News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

21 February, 2007

Bethesda confirmed at a recent press event that Shivering Isles will be one of the first games to make use of the extra 250 achievement points available for downloadable expansion packs.

The Oblivion add-on for 360 will also feature new shader technology that should bring the game up to the graphical standard of the PS3 copy, adding to recent comments from Bethesda spokesperson Pete Hines that the two versions will look virtually identical.

Shivering Isles is the first proper expansion pack for the The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It takes place in the wacky realm of Daedra Prince Sheogorath, who looks to you to become his champion and save his world from invasion. You'll be tasked to undergo lots of weird and wonderful quests, picking up new items, spells, and crafting new armour.

It's due for release in spring, via Xbox Live for console owners, and in retail stores for PC pests.

Oblivion is a launch title for PS3 when the console arrives in Europe on 23rd March. There's no word on the inclusion of the expansion pack, though previous downloadable update, The Knights of the Nine, will be included.

Head over to our first impressions of the expansion pack, which are loitering in other realms of our website

Nice to hear official confirmation that the 360 version is getting the texture enhancements; I presume this is true of the PC version too?

I wish EG had given an exact release date though. It's killing me having to wait for what looks like an utterly awesome expansion pack. Early March would be preferable to, say, 23rd please, Bethesda!

Does the graphical update only apply to the expansion or does it also work on the original Oblivion? Also, for the 360 version - will that ship on disc and if so will you need to disc-swap every time you travel to the new areas?

It would also be nice if PC owners could download this same graphics optimisation...

I dont think it will be for the PC version as the PC version looks a billion times better than the consoles version. Having a 360 myself and borrowed Oblivion, I decided to buy it for my PC. What with the mods already available you can get some stunning results.

It.s a good game bordering on great - but it does get very tedious after a while.

The upgraded shaders will be universal to all of Cyrodil, and the 360 version is only going to be made available via XBLM at the moment; so no disc swapping but you will need a HDD.

lol

Also, I think there isn't a firm date yet, so EG only have "spring" to go on.

my will bethseda have actually put any decent LOD into the game to stop the APPALLING HORRIFIC POPUP?
Since they can't seem to code for the engine they licensed for the game, probably not.

The article a couple of days ago talked about a portal that appears in the normal world and you just totally seamlessly nip back and forth between worlds - and anything you bring back can be used in the main game too. sounds bloody great to me :)

Why you laugh at my comment about it looking far superior on the PC?

As said, having played it on the 360 (on HD set) then buying it on my PC, the difference is striking. Especially if you install the great mods out there.

Take a look at this article if you don't believe me. Install them and tell me it doesnt look far better!

There is one thing making insane coments and not backing them up, but it's just as bad to dismiss somone else without backing up your view!

I think it might have been the "billions" reference that was the source of mirth. Unless you can back that up too I guess ;)

I personally play Oblivion on a 360, because I gave up on PC gaming ages back. But I would agree that the PC version can look better on a good system. In fact Oblivion is one of the games that makes me wish I did still have a PC that was up to the do, as the mod scene is great also.

Haha - the store assistant in Game just tried to get me to pre-order a PS3: I'm afraid I laughed at him. My point being that with the PS3 coming a full 18months after the 360, there should be a clear gap between visual quality.

I also had have the PC version and the 360 version - but I prefer playing the 360. It doesnt look quite as good sure, but its certainly better from an armchair with a wireless joypad on a 32" HD than cramped in front of a monitor with a mouse and a billion keyboard shortcuts. Oh, and the 360 version hasnt crashed on me yet either.....

Will it fix the stuttering and LOD nonsense in the original game as well?

360 version is same as PC on High settings... PC can go a bit higher but not much so the "normal" version of Oblivion on PC looks virtually the same as 360 version. Mods are a different thing....

Likewise prefer the comforts of playing in IKEA Poang armchair with Panasonic 32" HD and wireless joypad. I do have dual core PC with reasonably good graphic card and 2 GB memory, but the PC gaming I prefer to devote to strategy games (Civ, Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes etc) and the rest of the gaming joy via consoles.

Glad to see the updated shader will work on X360 on the whole game and not just the downloaded expansion pack. PS3 should have a year worth of advantage ahead of X360 but seem that we are still largely on same level.

PS3 need to have more killer AAA titles NOT available to X360 or PC, so Oblivion will not be the reason to splash out on PS3, but good for those who haven't got the game on PC or X360.

Great stuff - 140 hours into Oblivion and I've barely scratched the surface so this should be out in plenty of time for when I've sucked the original dry :)

Can anyone point to more info on the graphical improvements???

They are not that big... just textures in the distance are better. Stare at some PS3 screenies and you might see the difference. Youc an see it best in wide open landscapes ofc.

Right, OK. That sort of thing never bothered me that much anyway but maybe points to them tuning the engine somewhat and giving a better draw distance too?

This game needs gameplay updates.. not graphical updates (which imho are good enough already)
