SEGA wants iPhone game ideas

Or it's Sonic and more Sonic.

SEGA is brainstorming ideas for iPhone and iPod Touch games and wants to know what you fancy.

"So the question is, what sort of games are you looking to see on this new platform?" asks the publisher the SEGA website. "Any idea is welcome, no matter how out there or random, we'll take it and add it the list for the presentation."

The game has to be a SEGA creation, which rules Road Rash out, and no original concepts will be accepted.

Ideas will be gathered on Twitter, Facebook and on the SEGA forums and put to a panel later today - US time, we imagine, which gives you a while.

Requests so far cover Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi, Outrun and Chu Chu Rocket. Get in there!

I want Space Channel 5 but I don't want it enough to post the idea on twitter, facebook or sega forums

Cheap market research effort in place of creative thinking from paid writers, I think.

"Cheap market research effort in place of creative thinking from paid writers, I think"

    Or perhaps as well as?

Market research is a good thing, cheap market research even better. I would much rather Sega ask people what they want, instead of just bunging out a tired rehash of one of their silver haired IPs.

How about Super Monkey Ball remake for XBLA. Sod this iphone.

I need another GREAT monkey ball game, even if it's a remake of the original (and best)

NiGHTS? Might be cool if you can trace your finger to make him fly
  • Weezer #10 3 years ago

How about Sonic Damage, where you get Sonic to run at high speed into a variety of cripplingly sharp objects.

Mainly to see the spiny little cunt get severely debilitated. I've never liked him.

Hey I'll give them free all my game ideas!!! Awesome!!!

ChuChuRocket with wi-fi and online play. Yes.
  • schnide #13 3 years ago

This is so lame. It's either because they don't know what to do, and/or to drum up excitement about whatever they choose.

SEGA, you suck. Then you say you've changed, and just like LucasArts do time and time again, you then suck harder.

Chu Chu Rocket would be perfect.

I'd like Jet Set Radio too though using finger motions to draw the graffiti.

How about Sonic... on the iPhone... but with decent controls and framerate?

And WE WANT Sega to explain how they'll pay us for original ideas!!! Cheeky bastards asking for our creative input because they're not capable of coming up with any new ideas of their own.

Sega, if you're struggling, just do what 99% of your industry has always done... rehash, remake, retitle and redo games and ideas that have been done before. Here's a recap of a few genres for you: driving, shooting, flying, rpg, fps, side scrolling, levels, sport, racing, arcade, adventure, and you know what... I neither have an iphone nor care for one, and am amazed anyone is willing to spend money on crap games on essentially a telephone!!! I'm a good old fashioned hardcore gamer, who's hobby is carried out in the comfort of home.

We need a Big the Cat fishing game.
  • youhavenomail #20 3 years ago

They won't listen to gamers. We've been asking them to stop ruining Sonic games for years.

    You're all philistines!

    JET SET RADIO.
  • SpaceMonkey77 #23 3 years ago

Sure, I'd love to give Sega some of my cool game ideas, but what do I get out of it? If I get a cut of the money, then I'd gladly help.

Beyond that, just raid you back catalgue Sega.

Daytona, Motoraid, Cosmic Smash (this should also be on Wii), Border Break (Sega's new arcade game, that should be consoles, but isn't). Scud Race, Planet Harrier.

Daytona with online multiplayer is no brainer, and I'd buy an iPhone just for that. Perhaps Sega should also look at rebooting the Shinobi series with a new game.

    Rez would be awesome...

    @peterfll
Though I agree with you in principle, I don't think the iPhone is the right place for a new JSR. I reckon 360/PS3 is the place for it to go. Both games were technically impressive titles with ambitious scale. Basically just take JSRF. Then add back in JSR's directional inputs for larger tags, while possibly retaining the "drive-by" spraying of JSRF for smaller tags. Go back to the original's police presence rather than the cordoned off areas. Allow online multiplayer in competitive modes as already seen in JSRF, but also with coop modes. Put a big focus on online leaderboards.

Or just give us an XBLA remake of either game. Just....just give us something Sega. Anything!

But on topic, I reckon Chu Chu is pretty much a no brainer. Click on a square to place a tile, and then sweep the finger in the direction you want the tile to point. The only problem I can think of is that in order to get big enough maps each tile would have to be pretty small, which might make it hard to be accurate enough with your placement.
  • ReNo #26 3 years ago

I'd also like to point out that Sega aren't looking for people's original game ideas. That's a legal nightmare, and no company would ever ask you for that. Instead they want you to suggest games from their back catalogue that you'd like to see. The new article explicitly states that suggestions have to be Sega games and original ideas will be dismissed outright.
  • rprince #27 3 years ago

Chu Chu Rocket! Although I'd rather see this on PSP or maybe DS.
  • KrissAkabusi #28 3 years ago

Nights into Dreams and the iPhone are a match made in heaven. Surely to hell they have to do that. Graphically unintense game, with control scheme which could be tailor made for such a device, and the fact none of the Nights games have been that lengthy and are all about replay value. Nights into Dreams screams iPhone conversion.
  • Kerome #29 3 years ago

That just takes the biscuit... there's obviously a complete dearth of creative talent at Sega, if they're trawling the fans even for re-use ideas this blatantly. My five-year old can throw a dart and hit some old Sega license better than their whole building of undoubtedly very expensive publishing staff... I mean, have these people never heard of proper user research?

    Typing Of The Dead

    Could work...
  • smelly #32 3 years ago

@Kerome - it's what the marketing people call "keeping the fanbase community happy" by making them feel like they have a say.

i.e. if you vote for chu chu rocket, and sega was already making it - then it comes out - you're more likely to buy it (because you voted for it)

    see?
  • Alkeno #33 3 years ago

Good luck Sega, it is a tough market and I'm not giving away ideas for free lately.

But I feel generous today: Remake the Jurassic Park arcade, I loved it as a child. And I said remake, not port.
