SEGA unveils OutRun for XBLA/PSN News

SEGA has announced that a Sumo Digital-developed OutRun game is on its way to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in "early 2009".
OutRun Online Arcade invites you to "rediscover the 15 glorious OutRun courses" in ten licensed Ferraris, while the initial screenshots and trailer point to a game very similar to, if not entirely based upon Sumo's previous work with the series on Xbox, PS2, PC and PSP, with elements like slipstream visible.
In addition to a single-player mode, there's also Time Attack and Heart Attack, where you gather hearts by satisfying quickie objectives like "Don't crash!" and "Go through the gate!", and elsewhere there's online multiplayer for six people.
SEGA has said this will support voice chat, and there will also be Achievements on Xbox Live Arcade, obviously, and Trophies for PSN - after Sony mandated that all games submitted to certification in 2009 support them.
OutRun, of course, is a brilliant racing game where you send Ferraris sideways through corners, and the handling is so abstract it's been compared to Scalextric and Audiosurf. It's also very bright and happy, with amazing music. Yay!

This is exactly what I was thinking about just the other day - I waited on the PS2 version for people to join in on a race - only to find that I was Billy no mates - I waited 3 hours at one point.
So I'm thrilled they are re-releasing this! Why can't they do the original old OUTRUN game and add in multiplayer on that? it's sooo simple yet they've never thought of it????? They must release the old arcade game in 1080p in super crisp HD - that would be living the dream!!! |

I absolutely loved the first Outrun 2 (in fact, even as an avid Microsoft hater, that's what made me buy an Xbox) but the Coast to Coast additions such as slipstream and underwhelming tracks really didn't turn me on anywhere near as much.
I'd love to see them keep to the first sequel's treatment but it looks like they've put all the latest features in too. I doubt my vote will count on this, but if you can at least give us the option of pure Outrun 2 racing, I'll be very happy indeed. |

This game NEEDS to be Coast-2-Coast style! Still play that game to this very day, and love every second of it!

'Tis good news, BC on both my consoles is mainly used for a blast on Outrun2 or Coast2Coast.
An HD version stored on the harddrive will be much appreciated. And as others before have said, now Sumo has done GTI Club for Konami and Outrun2 in this fassion, get cracking with Daytona and Sega Rally, then have a chat with Namco about an HD version of the original Ridge Racer, ta. |

Just to clarify for people, this included the Outrun 2SP tracks (i.e no original Outrun2 tracks). Lets hope they appear as DLC huh?
Not gonna let that become a downer tbh, this could finally give the game the exposure it deserves, exposure it would never see as a retail disc release. |
