Sega quiet on Aliens games News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

4 June, 2007

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has let fly a few plot details for his team's upcoming Aliens-inspired first-person shooter.

It will put you in the shoes of a Colonial Marine, according to an interview translated by Gamespot, and the action will unfold from your viewpoint. These were the soldiers who accompanied Sigourney Weaver's character Ellen Ripley in the film.

Pitchford also went on to mention the role-playing Aliens game in development at Obsidian Entertainment, noting that there was communication between the two studios, although both projects were "going in totally different directions".

Unfortunately Sega is remaining tight-lipped about both games, so we're left without names or concrete platform selections for either. However, we'd expect to see PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 outings and we know one of them is due in 2009.

Sega announced plans to create the Aliens games at the end of last year, enlisting the help of two firmly established and successful developers to help quash the notion that film-inspired offerings are usually a bit rubbish.

And it seems Gearbox doesn't want to stop at just Aliens, as Pitchford left us with news he'd met with directory Michael Mann to outline plans for a Heat videogame, but hadn't had a chance to get to grips with creating it yet.

i cannot see how they could make a game out of heat - it doesnt fall into any specific category, leave it alone.

Heat videogame? Let's wait a few years until the narrative qualities of gaming are up to par with the technical merits.

Aliens videogame I am truly waiting for, because the material is just perfect for the medium.

Hmmmm, why don't they just port Alien Vs Predator to next-gen? Just think of the multiplayer possibilities...

Wouldn't mind having that as a MP-only game for download at PSN...

Don't get me wrong I quite like Gearbox and all (BIA games are awesome) but allowing another dev to make a new Alien based game when Monolith did such a bang up job with AvP2 is clearly crazy.

Monolith + AvP3 + Enhanced F.E.A.R. engine better still Unreal Engine 3 ftw.

You know it makes sense.

I don't know if it's just me, but I still can't warm up to the idea of an Alien RPG. I am a massive fan of the films, and I just can't see it working tbh without drastically changing the feel of the films, which I would be against.

Actually, given how many of these sorts of tie-ins are usuall rubbish, to date the Alien films have seen some pretty good associated games.

Please can we have a moody System Shock style Alien game inspired more by the first movie than the 2nd.

Thanks mate.

Xiphos, I'm not sure what your basing your theory on that the Alien/Predator thing will "slip down a step" as you put it, because its been around for 50 years. Theres still a load of people out there who would love to see some new material. Just because its 20 years old, doesn't make it old hat.

Superman has been around for 50+ years and people are still interested in that. Star Trek, again, 50+ years. Star Wars, 20+ years and it never looks like people will get fed up with that. Oh and some guy named Jesus - 2000+ years...seems he's still in fashion in some places as well... ;)

So you play as one of the colonial marines who accompanied Ripley. Didn't they all die messy messy deaths in Aliens, with the last of them being killed off at the start of Aliens 3?

Aliens-whatever, sure, could be very nice, but Heat? Are you insane? Have you not learned anything from, say, the Reservoir Dogs videogame?

Unless they take the Blade Runner approach and only use the movie's setting and themes, telling an entirely different story, possibly with changing setups (like who's with the cops). Hmmm...

I think Rob means "the army-types that went with Ripley were Colonial Marines dontchaknow", rather than "you will play one of them".
So you will play *A* Colonial Marine, but not THE Colonial Marines of the Aliens film.

Which is a bit rubbish. Six years ago, and eight years ago, you paid your money and got two games which included Aliens, Predators and Marines as playable. Nowadays you just gets Marines. Tch.

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Gearbox just transplanted the gameplay of BIA into the Alien/s universe. It would work well enough especially if you could deploy sentry guns.
