SEGA brings more lightgun games to Wii

Gunblade NY and LA Machineguns.

SEGA is bringing two more arcade classics to the Wii, by the looks of things.

The Entertainment and Software Ratings Board website is listing a "Gunblade NY & LA Machineguns Arcade Hits Pack". It's been given a "Teen" rating and is down for the Wii.

"This is an arcade-style first-person shooter in which players engage in missions to protect sections of New York and Los Angeles from enemy forces," reads the product description.

"Players aim targeting crosshairs on dozens of attacking soldiers, robots, missiles, and vehicles that explode when destroyed. Constant gunfire and explosions highlight the frenetic action; zoomed-in camera angles depict multiple projectiles striking the humanoid terrorist enemies."

Anyone who hung around arcades a lot in the mid-nineties will know all that already, of course. They may also recall the giant gun controllers the games were played with.

There's no word on a price yet, or when the games will make it to Europe, but we'll keep you posted.

    More Virtua Cop please!

All good by me, I love lightgun games. House Of The Dead: Overkill was one of the most pure-fun game experiences I've had in the last year - no pretension, just hammy acting and shooting lots and lots of zombies. Ace.

Ah shit. I loved Gunblade in the arcade. Now I might have to buy a Wii.

I like lightgun games, but their implementation with a Wii Remote feels a bit too floaty. Just moving a crosshair around on screen isn't really the same, and when I turned it off the aim wasn't quite the same as with an actual light gun. Still, with TV technology having moved on this is still the best thing on offer.

When I read that I was hoping for some Virtua Cop, or maybe some Confidential Mission. I love those ones :)

Gunblade was pretty good too though, with it's big chunky machine gun cabinet. The game wasn't bad either, nice to see it coming to Wii.

    @Doctor_What - we don't use the Z word!

Because they are mutants, of course.

Given that Gunblade NY's gameplay effectively consisted of just moving a cursor across the screen, hosing bullets, it's perfectly suited to Wii's brand of lightgun stuff.

I hope they add the signature constant vibration while the fire button is held down. Ah, happy days. I might actually buy this.

Omitting HoTD1 from the 2 and 3 compilation was a bummer, and no Virtua Cop is continually disappointing, but the way these games finally are finding a home where co-op fun is a given and the light gun functionality still works on new tellies is excellent.

It's interesting to note that the original design for Gunvalkyrie - using a Dreamcast gamepad and lightgun in conjunction - is essentially what the Wii *IS*. We'll never actually see that game of course, but it would totally work.

Gunblade was awesome but will it feel the same without the huge thing that turned on an axis?
  • seabassuk #11 2 years ago

Come on Sega, stop messing around and give us Virtua Cop 3

It won't be quite the same playing Gunblade without the big mounted gun. Point left foot forward, right foot behind and sideways, the butt of the gun in the hollow of your shoulder, look down the barrel. Ah, the halcyon days of youth.

If they ever release a proper light gun for the Wii, I'd get one (and a Wii! hah).

Any betting that these will be used as an excuse why hardcore games don't sell well on the Wii in 10 months time?

I'm surprised there aren't more lightgun games on the Wii, see as it's perfect for them. Virtua Cop? Yes. Even a little Time Crisis? Maybe? Oh come on, Resident Evil Overkill was great! Great fun with the Blaster case, which oddly for that sort of thing, makes all the difference.

Is Gunblade the one with 2 guns mounted onto the arcade unit, having recoil and you played as gunners on the side of a helicopter basically holding the trigger and spraying over the enemy and their rockets? I'm pretty sure that was NY but trying to put a game to the name, or vice versa.

I thought Cirtua Cop 3 was coming to the Wii, but got scrapped.

Loved these games in the arcade.

Guess the Wii needs all the games it can get, with its almost bare arse release schedule, even if Sega have to scrape the barrel for them.

    Gunblade? Bloody hell! Fantastic game.

Probably lost on a lot of post-97 'ehhhh Wii is for teh gayz' "gamers" but never mind

Will miss a bit without those huge guns but they can just have the wiimote constantly vibrate and you can use a Hand Cannon shell for that authentic arm numbing experience.

Gunblade is one of my favorite Sega lightgun games though and one of the games I could 1CC. Though only on the short route. Sadly its one of those games where it just starts throwing bullshit unavoidable hits at the end to make you burn through lives and credits. Hopefully the difficulty will get tweaked a bit.

Nothing beats the Virtua Cop 3 injustice where you could build up to 20 Lives if you were good and then the final boss would just wipe them out like it was nothing because it was unbelievably cheap. Thanks you jerks.

Agreed - enough of this tom foolery and let's just have us some Virtual Cop 3, using the balance board as the slomo pedal.
