SEGA bringing PS3-exclusive to the West News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

25 February, 2008

SEGA has said it will be bringing gorgeous PS3-exclusive Valkyria Chronicles to the West this autumn.

You might know it as Valkyrie of the Battlefield, and you also may have seen it on Eurogamer TV, parading around as a cel-shaded role-playing strategy game.

More specifically it's built on a new Canvas engine, and is said to look like a watercolour painting in motion. It also has a funny Blitz battle system where you can move and attack freely despite being a tactical RPG affair.

Valkyrie of the Battlefield takes place in a make-believe world roughly modelled on 1930s Europe, where the Empire and Federation are the two ruling powers. Sounds familiar: where's Hitler?

Anyway, this Empire force invades a neutral country called Gallia which, unsurprisingly, happens to be situated in the middle of the two factions.

You take the role of Welkin and his fellow soldiers in the 7th Platoon of the Federation, as you use weapons to sort everything out.

SEGA Japan is developing it, and must be nearly done because it's due out in Japan in April.

Meanwhile, pop over to Eurogamer TV for the trio of videos, or into our Valkyria Chronicles gallery for the first shots.

That's nice. A bunch of us were wondering if this was indeed coming to the West.

Very nice, hoping this turns out good, love the art style, and the type of gameplay they have.

I'm getting really fed up with people describing anything that's rendered with a look aping something hand-drawn as "cell-shaded". It's not: cell-shaded visuals have a specific look, being that of a shaded cell (animation). FFS.

AJ-D :: It would be called NPR (Non-Photorealistic Rendering) then? :)

But yea this looked interesting when I saw the trailers sometime ago. Looking forward to it. :)

I don't care what you call it, it looks bloody awesome. And the gameplay details are exciting too, with it not being an FPS, bot not being a turn based random encounter fest either. It's probably the most interesting upcoming game that I know right now. Fuck Spore :P.

Well as you can draw pretty much whatever you like on an animation cell i don't think this is accurate either.

Well, I recently caved and bought a PS3, mostly because Blu-Ray finally won out.

Was really unsure of whether I'd be playing much games on it, but this brings hope. Looking forward to it, great visuals, and setting, and it does remind me of the under-rated Ring of Red, which I enjoyed a lot back in the early days of the PS2.

Roll on PS3, but first, Lost Odyssey on my old trusty 360 (going on it's 2nd year without fault - knock on wood).

Looks very nice! Now if I was only able to find enough time to finish all those PS2 JRPGs anytime soon...

First, it's cel-shading, not cell-shading (not that any of it applies here). Second, is it Valkyria or Valkyrie? The previous games were using the word Valkyrie (if this is indeed a PS3 continuation of that, er, franchise) but now I am pretty confused and can't be arsed to google.
