Secret of Mana for US Virtual Console News

Wii News by Robert Purchese

14 October, 2008

SNES role-playing classic Secret of Mana adorns the US Virtual Console this week. We don't usually bother to write about what's up there, but this a special occasion.

Secret of Mana, a Square JRPG from before the Enix merger, adopts a real-time combat system and top-down view, a bit like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Better still, the game boasts local co-operative play for up to three people.

There's a radial menu system present for spells and swapping weapons, which can be upgraded at blacksmiths, and you even get a dragon to fly around the world map later in the game. It's brilliant. The music's great too. And it's only 800 Wii Points (approx GBP 6 / EUR 8).

The US is also treated to World of Goo this week, the WiiWare version of the PC game we slapped 9/10 on rather recently. World of Goo costs rather more at 1500 Wii Points (approx GBP 11 / EUR 15).

Fingers crossed that these appear here on Friday, then.

I've heard the fuss, but never played it (Mana, not Goo). Maybe I never will if this never comes to Europe. Hope it does.

Secret of Mana is awesome. The music is particularly amazing too.

Might download this tonight actually as my Wii is American.

Yes, keep crossing those fingers, but you know we won't see World of Goo on WiiWare here. And it pisses me off.

I got Sword Of Mana based on the name for the GBA, it was utter arse. I recently slapped Secret Of Mana on emulation on me PSP, wondering if it was rose tinted viewpoint of past gaming glory and if it was really as cruddy as Sword nowadays.

I discovered that it was still bloody brilliant.

Secret of Mana was the first RPG I ever played. It'll always have a special place in my heart... Six pounds is a lot for a game I already have though!

I thought I played Secret of Mana when I was younger but a quick look on Wikipedia shows that I must be confusing it with a different SNES RPG.

Can anyone remember the name of a SNES RPG where you played as a boy with psycho-kinetic powers, and as the game progressed you could change into two other characters, one of which was some beefy knight with long blonde hair?

Secret of Mana is infinitely better than Secret of Evermore. If you played that and enjoyed it, you'll love this!
