Euro Home "is behind other regions" News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

14 May, 2009

PlayStation Home community manager "TedTheDog" has admitted that Europe trails other regions in the number of themed areas PS3 Avatars can explore.

"Let's be honest, SCEE Home is behind the other regions in the number of Spaces we have to offer," he writes on the European PlayStation forum (via VG247). "That's not to say we don't have some really good clothing and furniture, we've actually got some excellent partners in the Shopping Centre. And we've also got Red Bull and Xi (the latter still has some way to run and some more surprises to bring you.) And Red Bull have another trick up their sleeve too...

"But overall, we're short on Spaces in general. In isolation we don't think this makes SCEE Home a bad place but we fully understand the regional comparisons and why they're made."

So, he adds, priorities will be switched to production of Spaces for the foreseeable future. The first task is implementing some of the older content "we've been missing for a while now" - areas like Uncharted, Warhawk, Guitar Hero and Resident Evil 5. After that, he hopes new spaces can launch simultaneously with other regions.

The European team has been recruiting to meet this end, and is apparently considering 17 Spaces to add over the next two to four months. Not all will make the cut.

TedTheDog also says Sony will try to share information sooner with the community, and aim to communicate the latest Home changes "one week in advance".

I don't really have much interest in Home, but out of curiosity I checked out the US and Japan versions. Try it, you'd be amazed at the difference!

I'm homeless as I don't have a PS3...

At least they're consistent as PSN is way behind its US and especially JP counterparts. Which frustrates me every single time i'm logging in each Thursday, trying my best to offer my hard earned cash to SCEE for some PSP goodies (*good* PSOne games for example). But Sony doesn't want it it seems....

Yeah, it's SCEE that's behind other regions, not just Home.

I think Europe will remain "behind" regarding everything ps3 AND xbox360.

Regarding Home:

I can't care less if they update it or not...
It is so f...ing USELESS

Quite funny when you see that europe has allways been one of sony's biggest if not THE biggest market for sony.

I wish they would just drop the whole Home thing. It sucks, it never sounded like such a good idea and the poor execution just made it worse. So they should probably stop wasting resources on that and relocate them for somehting else, like adding new services (video downloads?), developing PS2 software-based emulation or whatever.

Am I alone in actually forgetting Home even existed until this article popped up?

No.

Well I agree money should go to something more worthwhile like Video Store or PS2 emulation (hell even some much needed good exclusives!), but no matter how useless to the majority Home is, it's still a service they've added, just not a very good or interesting one.....

Yeah, but what I fail to understand here is if it's so plain to see to most of us that Home sucks so bad, how come Sony actually thought they had a system seller there? I'd like to think their conception of the service was vastly different to what it ended up being or to what it is right now. Right now the reality is that Home's veeery far from being even remotely interesting to most gamers, let alone the more casual type of gamers or the general public.

I would honestly prefer for SCEE to let Home alone as it is and focus on better contents for PSN, I would be darned horrified if European Home was polished up and expanded to match other regions' Home but at the expense of our PSN?!

Europe is supposedly Sony's important region? I think the expression is 'proof is in the pudding'?

Home is not for me and quite a few of gamers it seem, fine if you are darned interested in this type of thing but the better stuff can be found on PC scence innit?!

PS Home in the UK/EU is a joke! It's over priced compared to say the US, and they have a much better selection of spaces.

Hell the EU home is still using the same old home square we had in the beta this time last year, while the us has the awesome central plaza, which is their 3 "home square" type thing in the last 12 months!!

I am fed up with the US/JAP regions getting thing before the UK/EU, surely this is descrimination?!!? Maybe we should all join together and put a case together ;)

On a side note, on the US PS Store they are GIVING AWAY Rag Doll Kung Fu, which once again is a comple pi$$ take as we still get charge £8!! Hell tbh i would get rid of my PS3, if it was not my main Blu-ray Player!

To me the greatest issue with Home is not that there's nothing to do (although there's not a lot to do, let's be honest), but is simply the amount of loading / buffering time needed not only for initial startup but to transition from place to place. If this were immediate or at least half as slow as it is now, I might occasionally find myself checking Home out, but choosing to stare at loading screens for half an hour when I could be playing a game or watching a movie instead seems like time wasted.
