SAW game in works

Film-dedicated developer created.

Brash Entertainment has recently revealed itself as a publisher that will focus solely on creating film licences.

It's backed and co-founded by Legendary Pictures boss Thomas Tull, who's helped the newcomer raise more than USD 400 million to get it off the ground.

The studio itself will be made up of experienced producers, writers and designers, who will hand pick and work with selected developers to create games based on movies.

Brash Entertainment's website claims it has more than 40 major licences from partnerships with five meaty film studios, and that 12 games are currently being worked on. Of these, only production on a SAW title is confirmed, although an adaptation of action flick 300 is a strong candidate, given that Legendary Pictures made it.

"Brash is founded on the simple premise that top Hollywood creativity plus top game talent should equal great games," said Mitch Davis, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Brash. "We are laser focused on delivering high-quality games. The other aspects of our business are left to the experts - best of breed partners we've tapped for their specific expertise."

No platforms or dates have yet been concreted.

Head over to the Brash Entertainment website for more information.

At least they aren't having to rush to meet film deadlines for Saw and 300 if it is a goer... so at least that is one element of film-to-game development that isn't working against them.

Sooooo you'll get to design the perfect torture/killing aparatus, and then put it to the test on a person who you find most eligible to die from a selection of different folk.
Wow, that sounds like a whole lot of fun, just the type of thing I want to be doing when I'm chilling out playing games....
Well it would be that, or it could be you're the captured dude/dudette, who has to escape the torture/killing machine by going through a series of QTEs and analogue stick whirling, be successful and you want get your head twisted off!!!
    It's going to sell millions.

Fantastic news. If most of the awful film conversions come from one place it's much easier to teach casual gamers to avoid them. In theory at least.

THIS SOUNDS LIKE A REALLY GOOD IDEA.

Not quite. Saw 4 is apparently in the making for another Halloween release, so I wouldn't be surprised if the game is released alongside that.

Together with the current trilogy special edition.

    /Takes of cynical hat.

    Nope

The only way Saw is going to work as a game, is as a point 'n' click with you playing the part of a detective trying to catch the killer. Any other way and it'll be an absolute fucking disaster.

Although I can't help but think it'll be a bad idea overall regardless of genre if you are playing as the killer, as I'm sure we all remember the furore surrounding Manhunt. This'll be 10 times worse if you actually get to play the part of Jigsaw at any point during the game.....

What about a DS and Wii game where you just Saw body parts away to escape using those innovative control methods? Sounds great! Not.

I'm staggered that no-one pointed out to these fools what an ironic name Brash Entertainment was for a film license only game studio. Based on their lamentable straight-faced use of phrases like "laser focused" and "best of breed partners", I really hope this is going to be a giant money laundering scheme or something, another Gizmondo wherein everyone involved makes a giant tit of themselves, brings the ridicule of the entire gaming world down upon them, and then gets sent to prison. If that includes anyone involved in Saw or 300, all the better.

A developer that's dealing just with film licenses? Why aim so low? :(
  • menage #16 5 years ago

Oh God, a grind the pig minigame. I couldn't even get myself to watch Saw 3 after the horrible second part.

And 300 is definitely not a good game concept. Everybody dies and it's practically one stage. Plus it wasn't very good to begin with (bloodporn a friend called it)

    Screw them and their movies.

They need to reckognise the line for when a film can become a game. SAW, not really a good concept - so far in the trilogy, only one person has survived the jigsaw's traps. (i think) But as already said, they could have it as a detective thing, but then you'd basically get Condemned. Which was good, but not if you get replicas. 300 should stay as a film. It works as a film. Why spoil it as a game?

Because the company are new, I'm guessing they just want to get themselves known by looking at what films people really loved. But so far, nearly all of the films that should be made into games have either already been done, or the licenses are taken.

I say wait for better films, or dig up some old ones. The Warriors worked fantastically. I'd love to see this kind of idea come back, old films recreated into games.

    There. Fixed :)
  • numptyboymatt #19 5 years ago

I suppose that it could work if you play as someone like Zep (the guy from the 1st one who worked in the hospital was poisoned and had to perform certain tasks in order to get the antidote to cure him)... Only other way I can see it working is, as someone has already said, is a crime-solving point-and-click type game, but then, I cant really see the majority of people who like films like Saw going for that - Whereas I like it for the storyline, I think a lot of people who go to watch them just do so for the gore etc.

SAW the game? Inspiration strikes! How about a button-mashing minigame where the faster you click the mouse, the more Danny Glover overacts?

Or they could go all post-modern and turn it into a management game a la 'The Movies' - can you get the crappy film finished on time while disguising the pocket-money budget, patch the gaping plot holes, and coax convincing performances out of a cast so wooden they'd burst into flames if left near a heat source? No? Well nor could the makers of SAW, so don't feel bad about not getting a 100% completion rating; because as long as you can succesfully do the 'Get moronic American teens to cough up to see a bad Seven rip-off' sub-quest, you get to see the ending FMV, where the producers roll around naked in a huge pile of dollar bills hooting with laughter and snorting cocaine out of the surgically enhanced cleavages of expensive hookers. The expansion packs to cover the making of the sequels just re-run the FMV.

As for a game of 300, can't someone just reskin Rome:Total War to look like it's being restaged with male strippers and fetish models?
