San Andreas is best-selling in US ever News

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the best-selling game of all time in the USA, according to NPD Group data dug up by Forbes - GamesIndustry.biz's mag of the day, judging by this and the Apple vs. DS story.

Despite the fact that the data Forbes looked at went back 15 years, all of the titles on the US best-sellers list were released after 2001 - perhaps not so surprising when you consider that the best-selling console of all-time (the PS2) was released in 2000. Three titles from last year - Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, both from Activision, and EA's Madden NFL 2008 - have now made the top ten list, no doubt bolstered by their release on multiple platforms.

The top ten best-selling titles in the US based upon units sold are:

  1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (9.43 million)
  2. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (8.2 million)
  3. Madden NFL 2007 (7.7 million)
  4. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (7.3 million)
  5. Madden NFL 2006 (6.65 million)
  6. Halo 2 (6.6 million)
  7. Madden NFL 2008 (6.56 million)
  8. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (6.25 million)
  9. Grand Theft Auto III (6.2 million)
  10. Madden NFL 2005 (6.1 million)

Viva Pinata better be number 11 or you're all in deep trouble.

4 Madden incarnations in the top 10 list? wow. Would the UK list have 4 Fifa games in the top 10 list? (I hope not).

Well done CJ (and rockstar). My favourite is of course VC but SA was so ambitious it's hard to fault it. (except for the turf wars bits were pretty poo).

I wonder if yanks actually know GTA is one big piss take of them?

Would be interesting to see how the NES or VCS eras compare.

Pretty sad that seven out of the top ten places are made up of just two franchises. Much as I like GTA it does seem to show a lack of imagination on the part of US punters.

"The Nintendo game Super Mario Brothers has sold a total of 40.23 million copies worldwide. The 26 games featuring Mario, the character who first appeared in the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1982, have sold more than 152 million copies in total since 1983. More than 40% of US households own a Nintendo game system. " - Guiness World Records.

Not hard to imagine that at least a 1/4 of SMBs sales going to the States, so well done Mr Plumber :).

That list has about 3 games I'd be interested in on it.
Best selling is by no means best.

Not sure how reliable the source is, but apparently The Sims sold 50million units sans expansion, so you'd have thought it'd make the US chart.

Crime, guns and sport. Yes, I'd say that pretty much correct.

I don't think this list is actually accurate. It appears to be someone simply taking the games they like and adding them to a list along with some suspect sales data.

The work Rockstar puts into its titles justifies every one of those GTA sales. This is in stark contrast to the 'licence to print money' that is the Madden NFL franchise.

Page 12 of http://taketwovalue.com/documents/TTWO_V... shows GTA:SA as 21.5m, so good guess! :)

I thought Halo 3 sold more than Halo 2. Something seems fishy to me about these, but I'm not sure what...
