Samba for Wii confirmed

Shake it!

Reports that Samba de Amigo is heading to Wii are apparently accurate. Hurrah!

Although SEGA Europe couldn't confirm anything when we spoke to them the other day, SEGA of America apparently could, telling 1UP that Gearbox Software is developing the game and that more details will be released soon.

Samba de Amigo, bit of a Dreamcast classic, is a rhythm-action game about shaking maracas and striking poses to match the prompts from a dancing monkey on-screen.

News of a Wii version first emerged after scans of official US magazine Nintendo Power showed said monkey prancing around the cover.

It's not the first time SEGA has used Wii to drag a cherished game kicking and dancing into a new era, of course, with NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams also on its way.

Look out for more on Samba for Wii as soon as SEGA says anything.

So how's Samba going to work with the remote then??? Or will it get it's own controller again?
  • jellyhead #6 4 years ago

Nah, no brilliant maracas as far as we've been told instead it'll use the much less fun nunchuck/wiimote combo. :(

    I want Maracas!
I want Samba and friends not bland, boring Miis in the game!
I want them not to mess this game up!

    Please.

Having never played the original, I just assume that you shake the remote and nunchuck as if they were maracas
  • ghearoid #8 4 years ago

yeah, but as well as shaking them, you had to shake 'em at three different heights, as well as strike poses!

  • jellyhead #9 4 years ago

There's 6 round targets in a circle at the bottom of the screen - up left, up right, mid left, mid right, bottom left, bottom right. Basically Top, middle, bottom, left and right. Dots fly out from the center towards one of the circles, you shake the maraca when the dot hits the center of the target. Every now and then the game highlights two targets and an image of a pose appears, you hold the maracas on the targets and do the pose. The better you do the more vibrant the music becomes, the better the party background is and the happier Samba looks. Do badly and the music distorts, people leave the party and Samba cries.

Look on youtube, there's loads of videos.
Great game, you look like an idiot playing it but you don't care and if you're not playing you can't wait to have a go and look stupid yourself. It's awesome. :)

edit: damn your succinctness, ghearoid! :)

Indeed. I can't think of how it'd work, unless they over-simplify the game or release a specific controller. Wireless maracas!

I'm sure Logic3 or some Asian plastics firm can knock out some Maraca shaped control covers for the Wiimote

They'd better put Super Sonic Racing in there, i love that song! :)

Time for me to finally buy a Wii.

Although it's a shame SEGA themselves aren't doing it. It's difficult finding anything aside from NiGHTS that they're developing now. Perhaps the divisions were all grounded after Sonic on 360/PS3. o_O

I wonder how much the original's worth these days. They hardly released any in Europe.
  • Arcadiian #17 4 years ago

eBay says £62.00 and counting, although I was too lazy to find the price of any sold.

I remember them going for well over £100 in ye olde Dreamcast days though.
  • Ignatius_Cheese #18 4 years ago

Didn't it cost £100 new for the Dreamcast...?

I managed to inherit a copy together with two sets of maracas from a mate relocating to Japan. Thank you very much! :o)
  • Arcadiian #19 4 years ago

I think it did cost £100, but of course prices drop once games are released. My point was that it went back up again, over the original price.

Edit: I forgot to add how lucky you are to get a copy like that. It took me at least 2 weeks of constantly begging my Mum for a copy. "I'll do the washing up!". "I'll mow the lawn!". "It'll be good exercise!". "BUT IT'S GOT MARACAS!!!". Ah, good times.

    /wipes tear.

I got the full yellow box set for £45 in a Cash Converters after looking at paying £120 in the Import Indie gamestore by me.

I obviously had the God of Jammy Sods watching my back that day. :)

    >Or will it get it's own controller again?

From my understanding, there's gonna be an attachment into the wii remote for the maraca part.. then you use 2 wii remotes.

Gawd knows how it'll do the height though, may end up being a very different (may be shit) game.

"I wonder how much the original's worth these days. They hardly released any in Europe."

I sold my copy to a fool for 185 quid!

(only got 20 quid for the dreamcast though!)

"They'd better put Super Sonic Racing in there, i love that song! :) "

    Oh gosh yes.

    Everybody's Super Sonic Racing
Try to keep your feet right on the ground
    When you're Super Sonic Racing
There's no time to look around.

Not that I spent loads of time playing Sonic R, and then that song on Samba.

Sega just need to do a Wii version of Burning Rangers, and I will be as happy as can be.
