Cool review I thought.

Co-Op is always a big plus for me so I may well give this a try even though I'd never even heard of it until now!

Can't say i'm suprised, the first one was better than the GTA games that came before it it (close call with Vice City)
I was gonna buy this regardless of review scores based on the fun i had playing the first one and now i see high scores i'm totally pumped, may have to pop back to COD5 WAW beta when they increase the level cap though.

Well the Tesco thingy turned this for an 'on the list' to a 'bought' (well, preordered I guess).
Hopefully they honour it, if not, might still see if I can get it elsewhere for around £30.

Thanks for the heads up Joel.

Tbh, if you listen to any commercial radio station for a significant period you will probably find the same sort of turnaround time.

I didn't like the first at all, it just came across as a cheap imitation, but this actually sounds good. Like the game GTA4 should have been. Although, less gangsta crap next time please.

The first game was slated horribly, and horribly unfairly.

I was dubious on the first one going in, until you realise that while it is based around the framework of GTA, it is nothing LIKE GTA, and anyone that argues that its a carbon copy doesnt really game very much.

It's a trillion times more bombastic than GTA (You dont spend half an hour taking sweet for chicken, you kill 20 guys on your first mission) it plays the gangster aspect for laughs (anyone who thought it was chavish, seriously? these characters are ludicrously exagerated deliberate stereotypes. Every single voice actor is having a great time.) and you get to derail trains. what more do you want?

I love GTA4, its thrilling and dramatic, but its not always fun, (and the radio is the worst in the series but thats besides the point)

Saints row gives you comedy nonsense and explosions.

Why the hate for the game ? same for the first which was excellent. The score...............so what! as it has been said many times you can not moan because it got the same as LBP, totally different genres.
People are allowed to slag gta you know. I have completed all the gta games on ps2/xboxs and can say that SR stands shoulder to shoulder and in many cases head and delts* above the 3D gta series. This doesn' mean gta4 was crap.

Any idea if they've sorted out the cars from the first game? The cringeworthy gangsta stuff I could live with. Cars that handled like they were in an 8-bit racing game I couldn't. If they've got the vehicles closer to the cartoony, enormo-fun ones from Vice City or San Andreas that'd be great.

@ShineDog - LOL @ your Saints Row is nothing like GTA comment.

So this game doesn't have a large free roaming world where you can steal cars and shoot people then or follow through a mission-based storyline? At a basic level, Saints Row *is* like GTA, especially San Andreas (as someone pointed out earlier) with its gang-culture theme. The difference is that it offers you different things to do like the insurance fraud, etc. and you have "homies", but to suggest that it isn't anything like Saints Row is quite frankly ludicrous IMO. All the reviews of the first game pointed out its similarities to GTA, the developers even acknowledged its influence and I'm sure most people who've played the game would agree that they're close cousins not distant relatives. But as they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, etc., etc. ;)

I said it was based around the framework, which it is. But the actual pacing and the combat focus couldnt be more different.

Saints Row is all about absolute chaos. It's not about a slightly misfiring emotional plot, its about drowning men in shit and throwing yourself in front of trains to claim insurance money.

So sure, its got similarities to GTA, but the reviewers at the time seem to have obsessed over that and completley ignored the fact that the game doesnt FEEL anything like GTA.

A nine?! Great stuff, I wasn't expecting that.

This review sounds a lot like this game follows in the footsteps of the PS2 GTAs, whereas GTAIV went down the realism route. There's room for both in the market, it seems.

As someone who hasn't played the first game but might be tempted by this one, I'd have like the review to address 2 additional points:

- What's the single player campaign like (already mentioned in the comments)? Are the missions interesting? When you go into sandbox mode, can you also steal bikes, helicopters, ...
- What are the controls like? I've only played GTAIV and got used to the controls relatively easily. Is this similar? Equally user friendly? What's the handling of the vehicles like?

Rob, can you comment?

If you'd been reading the previews across the web for this, you'd know that it was getting pretty much universal praise, so I'm not surprised it's donw well in the real review here.

As a PC player though, I'm now stuck over whether to get this or GTA IV (which comes out next month) - I must admit, I'm now tempted to go with this, and pick up GTAIV on the cheap next year.

Wow, wasn't expecting such high praise really. My problem is that I seem to be in a minority of people who loved every single moment of GTAIV and didn't find it boring in the slightest. This seems like it could compliment that though, otherside of a well polished coin as it were. Damnit, another one to go on my heavily crowded list then.

9/10, fuck that! No I haven't played it, and no I don't like GTA-esque titles, but this title's definitely only worth a 7/10! I'm getting a bit sick of EG being bought off by the ad providers on here, it's all corrupt I tells ya. Just like with EA and Dead Space, I bet they were like ''Sure we'll put ad banners on your site, and give you looooads a money, but only if you give us a 7/10, that's the deal baby! Like it or lump it''.

But seriously, have I missed something? Because that is definitely Mel C popping up on the SR2 ads. Did she get her face scanned or something?

This review fails to even mention Saint's Row 1. From the content it sounds like the same game; and so I won't be interested. It's mindless fun for about 5 minutes, but it lacks any of the humour, soul, immersiveness, or depth of gta4.

First off, calm down mate. You seem to be defending this game quite alot. Why?

Secondly, people, like Pearly, on the internet get so mardy over something which they're not affiliated with in anyway. I bet you don't either work for Eurogamer or THQ so get off your emo horse.

Well done to EG staff for not getting stroppy at the delusional "no wonder it got a high score it's advertised here" comments. It's a bit much to attack writer's integrity on the the flakiest circumstantial evidence.

I didn't play GTA long enough to get bored with it. Like others I found the style a bit po-faced, a bit weighed down with it's own sense of self-importance. (not saying it was a bad game - just not my sort of thing).

However ! I did enjoy stealing cars with people still in them. No ransom mini-game so I just drove the cars into the river.

Does anyone know if this game features an annoying insecure clingy little fuck who keeps phoning you up for games of pool, strip clubs and the like ? That's pretty much a deal breaker for me.

Edit: Pears of Anguish. Seconded ! It's a Tit all right ...

I'm currently playing the first one and I'm not terribly impressed. Don't like the vehicle handling, the side missions are plentiful but mostly dull, and the environment lacks the character of a GTA game. The sequel sounds like more of the same, so I'll pass for now.

I think he was getting 'mardy' because you are about the twentieth person to make a comment about the SR2 advertising having an influence on the score, when previous posters had blown this simple argument out of the water.

for the chavs.

And while we're on the subject of complaints, there are a fair few. Here's a (by no means exhaustive) list: the mildly racist stereotypes; the casual sexism (and the spasmodic convulsions of the lapdancers); the entire plot; the lameness of the swearing; an enemy gang boss who can survive 26 direct hits from a rocket launcher and still appear in the subsequent cut-scene without a scratch; getting stuck on bits of scenery; members of your own gang who run you over at the same mission-critical moment three times in a row (or who unleash torrents of gunfire upon mission-critical NPCs who you're supposed to spare); and even the not-so-occasional game-stopping crash, although with Microsoft's track record of hardware failure, who knows whose fault that is)

@ShineDog - I still disagree with you.

When I played Saints Row, I was reminded very much of GTA, only this game was obviously far better looking visually. The problem I had with the first game was that the humour and excessive swearing in the cutscenes felt very forced, like the developers were trying too hard to copy GTA instead of making Saints Row its own game. That's just my opinion though. Let's face it 80% of the time, you play these games outside of the main plot where the story and characterisation are non-existent so 80% of the time both games are more alike than not.
