PS the GTA games have featured territory control stuff at times. It's not unique to SR2.

@ Kiigan

"our homies follow you around, shoot your enemies and aggro the opposition to give you a bit of room, and they're key to succeeding at the game's tougher moments."

What does aggro mean?"

- It's a term usually used with MMO's in mind - they basically aggravate the enemy, meaning they don't focus attacks on you. So your homies can deal with the enemies whilst you flounce around looking for the objectives :D

What is it with people saying the review is inaccurate because the first game wasn't that good?

Don't people realise that games can actually be improved with time?

Hmmm... what!? 9? Wow.

Thought the first one was boring and lacking in the graphics engine dept. (Maybe I'm GTA'd out?)

I cant stand all the pimping and bling this seems to exude, that puts me off straight away. I dont play SP GTA anymore because that became so bland (seen it all before) that I switched off. It goes back in the drive now and again just to muck around in free-roam with my brother over Live. Great fun there, and worth the purchase alone, just. What with playing FIFA then L4Dead and Gears2 on their way, I still wouldnt be interested in Saints2. A lot of titles coming out, only the best survive.

If it'd scored this highly and come out first, I wonder if things would have been different... However, more people know of and respect GTA (for all the fun times it gave) so it'll probably dominate for another couple of releases at least.

So you guys are trying to claim Eurogamers was paid off for giving it a 9? The lowest score the game has recieved anywhere has been IGN UK, which only gave it a 7.5. Everywhere else it's recieved high 8's - solid 9's.

Currently has an 83 on metacritc, so EG are above average in their review, horses for courses i reckon. I personally had this pegged to be equally as potentially wank as fiddy's blood on the sand. just goes to show abut people's misconceptions at games they have never played.

the lack of information regarding the PC version is annoying, to say the least. the status is TBC on THQ's site right now.
game sounds good, though. hopefully not all the humor will be cringe-worthy.

"...people who understand that what made GTA fantastic wasn't just stealing cars and thumping people, but humour and character."

That pretty much sums this game up for me and also hits the nail on the head as to why GTAIV was such a disappointment.

Above average by 0.7 points on the "out of 10" scale.

And assuming that they round to the nearest whole number, they are actually potentially only 0.2 points above average on the same scale.

Just goes to show how arguing over a single point of difference in an "out of 10" scale is madness, as the way the score falls could actually come down to 0.1 points out of 10. That is like 1%.

Seriously.

Yeah but that 2% is purely down to advertising.

(I love all these comments about the advertising. Especially the way everyone makes them sound like *they're* the ones who have unmasked some massive conspiracy and they are the only ones supremely intelligent enough to see through it.)

@YeOldeGamer - Well I thought GTA IV was fun *and* had humour and character. In fact, I'd say it's my favourite game in the series since I started playing GTA III on the PS2.

I really don't understand where all this GTA IV hate is coming from - it's like it's suddenly fashionable to hate the game - but if I was Microsoft/Rockstar I'd be worried about who is going to be left to buy the promised DLC for the game. LOL

I hear you, but I can't find as much humour in IV as previous titles (I think LCS was the least funny).
Maybe when R* set out to create a fairly accurate depiction of post-911 culture, they succeeded a bit too well.
But IV does have it's moments, just not as many, for me at least.
Also, I really don't like the characters in IV. The McCreary's in particular make me cringe. Perhaps that was R*'s intention though!

As for the hate? Well since it came out there's been one patch (Which didn't fix all issues for all people), no extra online game modes, and still no official word on the DLC. Maybe gamers aren't as patient as they used to be.

How many patches were released for San Andreas?

All the humour and character was still abundant in GTA IV, they just went for a more serious tone to the main story. The radio stations were hilarious, some of the best adverts and dialogue so far in GTA games. That's something Saint's will never be able to touch, the humour in Saints Row was awful, badly written overly sweary and attempting to offend people to get laughs.

SR2 will be played and enjoyed though, even though the script and the dialogue is bound to be cliched and crass to the nth degree, the game will still be fun.

It puzzles me how after a full review and 180 comments no one has bothered to mention how it compares to the original. The entire review even read like it could have been a review of the last game really, only now with co-op play. I mean, it's the same city even, with perhaps some new gameplay elements added, and a new story mode, sure.. But what's new? In what way is this not just a slightly more polished version of the same game?

So my question then is can I just skip this as I overplayed the last one, or is this really shitloads of fun I should be having _right now_??

like harold and kumar 2, you mean ?

if SR2's writing is bad enough, it might just spoil the game for me, regardless of the gameplay. but hey, maybe the shit spraying "activity" is not the best of what it has to offer in the funny department.

Depending on which review you read of Saints Row 2, the script, voice-acting and humour is either great or not so great! I guess it's a bit like the original game then because I felt it was trying just a bit too hard to be shocking and adult and it came off as a bit crass, kind of like a 12 year old trying to act big and tough. It didn't stop the game being lots of fun to play but IMO it didn't even come close to the narrative or dialogue in the recent GTA games IMO. It didn't have particularly memorable characters either.

If this has been improved for the sequel then fine it'll increase my appreciation for the story but if not then it won't really affect my enjoyment of it in the long run. Good stories and dialogue are nice to have in any game but they're not really essential in a sand-box game.

Very happy for the SR guys that this has received pretty much universal acclaim.

The main reason for getting up from 7-8/10 to an evenish 9/10 is that it's thrown off the stigma of the 'GTA wannabe' shit it had with the first game and can be viewed on its own merits and also ramped up it's appeal to the max as the anti-GTA (particularly now IV has been and gone) and the dropping in of the 'new MP' of co-op is golden.

Well done boys.

I am enjoying GTA4, its of high quality, but it was the first GTA that I purchased on a console rather than a PC, and i have to admit I think i prefer these games on PC.

The main issue i have with GTA is that Vice City (or was it San Andreas).. they were moving the game forward alot and it was fun, and the gang war was good (except the missions stopped it :( But with every main release they take lots out and kinda start again. Its like GTA takes one step forward and two steps back. Im sure the new release of GTA will be bigger and better.. but i wish they would just build on the world they have already created.

Not convinced about this game, not sure if I want another GTA style game on console (maybe PC for me)... will wait and see.

You're right, makeamazing, the three PS2 GTAs all had a individual features that made them stand out. GTA 3's was a fantastic, gritty, grimy and involving storyline framed by interesting characters. Vice City's was humour, style and plenty of enjoyable bits on the side (like the property market and the mini-missions that entailed). San Andreas had an amazing game world, a wealth of customization if you fancied it and really nailed the vehicles handling and modding nicely.

Personally, I reckon GTAIV should really have just been the sum total of the best bits from the previous three games rolled into one with additional graphical frip-frappery and a more dense and absorbing environment. If that'd been the case, I don't think many people would have felt let down by it. Unfortunately, it's storyline fell flat on it's face after the first hour or so (picked up a a little near the end, not enough to make it interesting), the characters were absolutely forgettable, the only hint of humour was Brucie, it lacked the number of odd-jobs i've come to expect from GTA games, the game world was saturated but a bit samey after the second island and, for some reason, Rockstar ditched 3/4 of the fantastic customization of San Andreas (no car modding, about 2 clothes shops, no tattoo parlours nor barbers and a pretty lean selection of firepower). It amounted to a moderately enjoyable, free-roaming and pretty sandbox game; but they forgot to put in the sand.

I think the developers of SR2 have looked at that, thought 'well let's step in here and offer up what was inexplicably omitted from GTAIV' and seem to have made a cracking game out of it that puts volume and substance ahead of Slavic style. I'm buying it. The only problem is that, with Fable 2 coming up and Fifa 09 taking up most of my gaming time, something's gonna have to be sacrificed. I think I'll wait until it drops in price, first.

Good review. The first Saints Row was an improvement on any GTA game at the time, it was only slated for performance reasons (at a time when people were still anticipating the PS3 to be a supercomputer)

"TBH (while I don't buy into the EG review conspiracy crap) I'm slightly dubious of the glowing review seeing as the first game was so bad but I might try a demo. Problem is though the worst thing about SR1 was the gangsta theme for me, like a chav talking "street" it was truly cringe worthy. "

See I just fail to see what the problem was with the first game, I really do. I can only assume it's people with hard expectations set by the GTA series. I've never played any of the GTA games so I had a blast with SR and I'm really looking forward to this too.

As for the gangsta shit, to me at least, this is Ali G "gangsta", i.e. a complete (self) pisstake of gangsta/hiphop/whatever culture, how could you possibly take it seriously??!!

Shooting and driving, core mechanics, were better than GTA4 in SR. The story and atmosphere was cock. But it was certainly a game you could just drive around and have fun without bothering with the quests. If they've improved the game engine, added more variation then it can easily be a 9. Plus good co-op and customisation. The story and atmosphere is probably still cock but it's only there to link the missions and move things along. I doubt you'll care for the characters.

I've got review code on both platforms, and played both pretty extensively before reviewing the game - so whatever you consider the "premier" platform to be, consider yourself catered for. If there were any major differences, they would have been mentioned.

Regarding the humour, which a lot of people have mentioned - I liked it. The scriptwriting in general seems solid and pretty funny, to me at least. If anything I think it should appeal to British sensibilities fairly strongly; there's a lot of what I'd consider very British humour in there, especially if you select the "Cockney Gangster" option for your character's voice. Frankly, if you're going to take offense at some creative swearing and the odd misogynistic reference, you probably shouldn't be playing games like GTA and Saints Row in the first place...
