Saints Row 2 Hands On

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
Hands On by Rob Fahey

12 September, 2008

Page 2 of 2. <- Page 1

Within minutes, you're back in Stilwater, starting bar brawls, stealing cars and gate-crashing the court-room, where one of your faithful lieutenants is standing trial. Right from the outset, there's no question of being anyone's minion. You're a gang boss - and okay, your gang might need to be whipped back into shape, but you used to rule this city, and that's your objective once again.

As before, the game focuses on the idea of taking over territory from rival gangs - depicted on the map as a grid of neighbourhoods, each of which is coloured in the style of the dominant gang. Much extended in this game is the concept of cribs, properties which you can buy and redecorate right from the start (money permitting), with plenty of other properties up for grabs to add to your regular income. Your gang hangs out in cribs, and as you progress you gain the ability to order them to come along with you as AI backup on your missions (or hell-raising sessions).

Almost from the outset, the whole city is your oyster. Saints Row 2 isn't mean in how it doles out fun; an entire toybox is emptied at your feet. Dozens of "activities", which earn you Respect and cash, are available early on in the game. You start with the s***-spraying one we mentioned earlier, but move on to flying assault helicopters to take out enemy vehicles, an assortment of races, drive-by shootings and stunt jumps, and, perhaps my favourite so far, Insurance Fraud. This simply involves going to a target location and performing the most impressive pratfall you can (throwing yourself off a building repeatedly is good) to rack up the insurance cash.

'Saints Row 2' Screenshot hurry

You certainly won't be running out of new vehicles to try out in a hurry.

The game is fast, frantic and funny. Physics is tweaked to be fun, rather than realistic - cars and motorbikes (yes, it has motorbikes) travel at impressive speeds, blow up in very satisfying ways and are an arcade-style joy to handle. Your character is a criminal superman, with a recharging health bar and tons of stamina; you're far from being immortal, but there's no question that you're a videogame anti-hero, rather than a small-time thief. And if you're thinking this all sounds a bit like Crackdown, then yeah, we were too. Which is a very good thing.

Volition's goal here is to let nothing get in the way of fun, and from what we've seen the developer's succeeding. It's not just a matter of making the whole world enormously over the top - although that helps. It's also a question of tweaking every part of the experience to prevent players from being frustrated by bad design. Gone, for example, are missions where you have to drive the whole way across the city only to die at your destination and restart back on the other side of the city once more. In-mission checkpoints now allow you to restart after the last objective you completed.

Perhaps the most appealing aspect of Saints Row 2, however - more appealing even than the dark humour, the creative swearing, the carnage and the combat, more appealing even than the ability to play as a fat tranny - will be the co-operative play. It's fully drop-in, drop-out. What that means in real terms is that you can take your single-player character, hop into someone else's game, complete some missions with them, and then hop back out to your own single-player game. The missions you completed and items you picked up in co-op stay with you - and you're not bound to that game session. You can happily go off and join someone else's session straight away if you want.

'Saints Row 2' Screenshot women

The fact that you can put women's clothing on male characters seems less outrageous when you discover that you can also wear this.

The whole game is co-op-enabled, from story missions and activities to the city itself. You don't have to stick together during co-op, either - it's entirely possible to play on opposite ends of the city, and the game will sync up perfectly when you get back together. You don't even have to be friendly - kill your co-op partner and when he's resurrected he'll have the option of turning the tables on you by launching an impromptu deathmatch.

Having been a GTA clone last time, Saints Row 2 is now shaping up to be the anti-GTA - or at least, the anti-GTA IV. This is an openworld crime game about neon lights, huge explosions, fast cars, massive body counts and crazy rival gangs like the Ronin, a Japanese band of cyber-punk samurai, and the Sons of Samedi, a voodoo obsessed Caribbean drug cartel. Our expectations weren't particularly high when we went to see it, but having played the game for several hours, those same expectations have skyrocketed. For those left cold by GTA IV, this is shaping up to be the openworld game you've been waiting for, and even for those who were charmed by Niko's Liberty City adventure, Saints Row 2 is a welcome blast of mayhem and bright lights.

Saints Row 2 is due out on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on 17th October.

FIRST

EIGHT OUT OF TEN

BETTER THAN HALO

It's one of the best games of the past 10 years, possibly ever. Why anybody would choose to play it with pop-in, aliasing, and dodgy load times just because of the promise of some DLC at some point in the future is beyond me.

Blimey... I'm shocked at myself for being quite interested in the sound of this. GTA IV was solid at the (few actual gameplay) things that it did, and the writing was superb, but for real fun it was pretty slim going. This might just do the trick.

I found the first Saints Row to be an easy technical match for GTA - the shooting and driving were both miles better - but it was just a bit soulless and in the end I just didn't care enough to persist with it.

This souns very interesting though.

It sounds completely tasteless and aiming for the lowest common denominator...

Perfect for me then! Just mention Tera Patrick a few more times and I'm in!

No doubt this thread will be buried in a shit storm of GTAIV comparison nonsense.

Clearly the two games are not the same, and some people will prefer SR whereas others will prefer GTAIV. That is all.

Really disliked the shooting in SR... they only seemed to ramp up the difficulty be having more baddies on the screen and got boring really quick. However I must have been one of those rare breed that really did enjoy GTA4.

What? So now it's cool to be the guys who like Saints Row?

I have always said I was getting this, even when EG slated it before GTA IV came out. I liked it because it just focuses on the fun instead of the frankly idiotic story in GTA IV.

Even though rockstars opus sold millions. I wonder how many of those millions would readily return for a new chapter. My friends list is full of people like me who never bothered finishing the game, simply because after the half way mark, you simply can't be asked to kill yet another thug for some nameless crimeboss.

Hm, might give it a check, but hoping it doesn't turn out to be a cliche cheese fest, that would kind of ruin it. Plus having a decent story would be nice.

yeah I remember 2 years ago when Saints row was for chavs and it only did well because nothing else was out

...which it kinda was (to an extent), but it was a fine game under the fake gold exterior with a decent multiplayer mode (2v2 team matches were great)

This is out the same day as Dead Space I think. Too many games out at the same time!

I'll prolly make a regular guy, maybe a fat bastard for variety but that's about it. i just hope the gfx are up to date and that the side missions entail more than in the first game. insurance fraud was funny.

and please no multiplayer

thats right, i hereby beg Volition not to include MP...please!

Sounds like I won't even need to play with the character creation tools on this one, because EG seems to have designed me already.

This preview is spot on. The game definitely focuses on the more fun aspects of sandbox cities, whereas GTA4 seemed to go for more gritty realism. Fun is meant to be the most important thing, right?

I never expected much from this, but this preview actually makes it sound very promising...

Seeing how GTA4 was a game more enamoured by depicting a useless immigrant no-name delivery boy of the real players than being anyone of note or having varied things to do, this one's premise sounds immeadiately much more interesting.

Well, I'd want news of some serious gameplay development before I signed up again. And seeing as I apparently can't trust a single review site in the universe on this subject, I'm not sure where I'm going to look for it.

The big difference between saints row and gta IV was the atmosphere. The original saints row was fun, but ultimately soulless, whereas GTA IV had much better characters and atmosphere, really crafting a world. If saints row 2 can be fun and add some meat to its (narrative) bones it could be very good indeed.

I can proudly say I loved the first game from the off, and though it better than the GTA's at a lot if not all the different elements, if we are going to compare, which we are.
this 2nd seems to be ticking all the right boxes and is a defo buy for me.

Teabagging - Yaaaaaaayy...

I was sitting squat over my girlfriend the other night and said to her.. "You know what's missing in videogames?"

"mmdmpphhh", she mumbled.

"tebagging"

This is of course a fabrication.. she didn't say that at all.

Saints Row was my first ever experience of 'sandbox' gaming (I skipped a gaming gen or two ...) and I liked it a lot.

Funny thing is, when I started to think about my favourite moments of the game, I realised that some of those moments were, indeed, from Crackdown!

This sounds like a fabulous design decision to splice those two games and ramp up the sillyness, it sounds like terrific fun - the fun-fun kind, not the other 'fun' that you get from something like GTA IV. I don't see why this can't get a 10/10 despite being done in a completely different tone to GTA IV.

Wow. So everyone hates gta4 now? Must've missed a meeting. It's one of the only games I've ever stayed with to the end because of the storyline, not the promise of a bigger boss monster. I feel real involvement with the characters and a little bit sad at the end. Then I crashed a helicopter into a load of police cars.
Anyway, this looks good - just different. Doubt if I'll care either way if MC Pimpmaster lives or dies at the end.
