Saints Row 2 gets release date

It's out this summer worldwide.

THQ has announced that Saints Row 2 is coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 on August 26th.

In the US, anyway - it's not yet clear if the game will get a simultaneous release in Europe. (Update: A THQ spokesperson has now told us it's a "global" date. That reminds us of another game, you know. Any ideas, readers?)

The news came at THQ's Gamers Day event in San Francisco, currently being attended by our very own Tom. He's also reporting that there's no sign of Dawn of War 2 at the event, despite the game having been announced yesterday.

Oh well. In the meantime you can visit the new Saints Row 2 website, if that's your sort of thing, or learn more about the game via the gamepage.

    Will this get significant attention coming out in the months following GTA4? Its quality is going to have to be really really high.

    2008 might actually buck the trend and prove quite a good year for decent summer games releases.

    This is different from GTA4. The whole game is in co-op.

    This is going to be worse than GTA in some ways, but also improve on it in other ways.

    Exactly as Saints Row 1 was to the GTA3 series.

    I thought the first was quite good, I dont understand why it was so badly recieved by many people on here.

    be nice to have a demo again like last time so we can try out the new stuff untimed aswell :)

    Loved the first game, I waited to buy it very cheap, as I also wasn't expecting very much from it even though I enjoyed the demo, but in the end I probably liked the game more than any of the GTA games. Whether or not this can be better than GTA IV is doubtful but as the above poster said, we've already seen many things it's doing that sound better than what GTA has.

    The multiplayer especially, GTA IV's multiplayer is almost a carbon copy of the modes that were in the first Saints Row, and now SR2 is taken it a step further with full co-op through out the missions.

    First game was great. I just hope they have toned down the godawful urban character acting: ' We gotta show these muthafuggas what tiime it is.'

    Coming out after GTA will probably help this game as we should all be utterly fed up with it by then. Nowadays most people don't even finish their games. They get about a third of the way in and then quit.

    I didn't expect much from the first one, and had a great time playing it. The whole gangsta thing gets on my tits a little but I felt it was a bit of a pisstake so it was actually quite funny. I made a guy who looked like Andre 3000, was hilarious

    I thought the first game was pretty solid. Not amazing, but solid. The main thing for me that made it unplayable was the tearing.
  • gizmo #10 4 years ago

    That improved significantly after the first patch by the way.
  • bigbadbeasty #11 4 years ago

    I enjoyed the original more than any of the GTA games. It felt more open, it wasn't focused on one ethnic group, you could do missions in different orders- not like GTA, where it is so sandbox (apprantly) that you are forced do them in a linear format.

    Can't wait!

    @TheDudesRug

    Look in the video settings options after downloading the patch, it does help the tearing issues.

    @WinterSnowblind and gizmo

    There's a patch to fix this? Fantastic! Many thanks for the heads-up on this, I'll give it a whirl this weekend.

    I had loads of fun with the multiplayer at the time, the matchmaking was terrible, but 2v2 team games were so much fun

    I don't know how you guys could play the first one. I just found the frame rate in the game terrible. I can sort of put up with a poor frame rate in some games but not in a game that involves lots of driving. When you were driving forward in a car it felt like you were moving forward in chunks rather than a smooth motion.

    If the sequel is the same I wil not be going anywhere near it.

    Agree with 95% of you guys. I can't wait and loved the first one. I just had my custom riped soundtracks playing all through. I also enjoyed more than any GTA apart from Vice City, you just can't wack the 1980's.

    "I just hope they have toned down the godawful urban character acting: ' We gotta show these muthafuggas what tiime it is.'"

    I liked that, it was so over the top it was funny. And the character creation means you can play as a fat ginger gangster. Ridiculous, but brilliant fun.

    I can't wait for Saints Row 2. Like some of the people in this forum, I thought that it was awesome. Strangely enough, I am one of the 6 people in the world that has NEVER played GTA. Blame the fact that I have never owned a PlayStation (I have never rated the controller).

    Only 4 months to go.

    Add me to the list of people who preferred the original to GTA. Looking forwards to this!
  • Mordum #20 4 years ago

    Looking forward to this, really enjoyed the original... but as others have said, I really wish the whole urban feel would be toned down a bit.

    I just finished the first one too (7.50 off ebay), and loved it. Not perfect, had issues, but had a good time all the same.
