Rockstar gives GTA PS3 advice

To prevent 60GB model freezing.

Rockstar has said you should erase your game data and reinstall Grand Theft Auto IV if your PS3 freezes during gameplay.

The US PlayStation forums picked up on the issue and linked the problem with 60GB launch models of the console.

One commenter called the technical support lines and followed the steps above and has had no problems since.

This problem seems to be far from common, with only a tiny portion of the Internet reporting issues; the official European PlayStation forums make no visible mention of it.

Have you been having issues, Eurogamer reader?

Hang on so what if the gamer is half way through the game and it starts freezing on him... reinstalling will obviously screw up his saves wouldnt it ? Way to go Rockstar!
  • Widge #12 4 years ago

^^ back up the saves? to a memory stick?

I'm on 60GB, will report back if my PS3 suddenly starts producing jam or anything else strange
  • GamesProgrammer Verified Games Team Programmer, Eutechnyx Ltd. #13 4 years ago

Saves are kept seperate from game data on PS3, players saves would be fine, and if they were really paniky they could just copy them on to a PSP or memory stick.

  • alimokrane #14 4 years ago

    @Widge

Yeah, I know you can do that but if reinstalling is what solves the issue wouldnt that mean that the problem could also be associated with the save files ???

I dont have a PS3 so I dont know how it works. If save files arent affected then it's not a big deal as long as one is not impatient to wait for the game to be reinstalled again.

Well, yes, people would like to. But it seems others are experiencing freezing in the game on the PS3.

    :-)

Just get the X360 version, everyone. Buy an X360 for it - it's damn cheap, even by the time you've upgraded it. Works in higher res as well, and didn't need Microsoft's help to get it working nor did it delay the original launch date because it was buggy.

  • septimus #17 4 years ago

Well, the DualShock 3 is still nice.

My Elite isn't as noisy as my old Premium at least, not by a long shot. That and it hasn't RROD'd 4 times like the old on.

  • ruckus #21 4 years ago

For me the PS3 version sounds best for me but since I don't own one I'll make do with my 360 version.
That's just based on the PS3 version supposedly having less pop-up and I've yet to play it anyways so don't know how bad the issue is. It's disappointing that it exists at all though.
  • Bealsy #22 4 years ago

  • penhalion #23 4 years ago

The Freeze is a cache issue same as with the 360 version of Bully. It's patchable. I strongly suspect the 360 would have had the same issue had it used a disk cache.

I suspect that most whiners here don't actually own either copy of the game and are simply bitching because they can't play it. Given how good (though not perfect) the game is, I don't really see how any gamers would be bitching instead of playing it.
  • mossychops001 #24 4 years ago

So Bealsy, your not a happy Xbox 360 player then?
  • Widge #25 4 years ago

I think the saves are like PSP save games, they are tied to a game id. So as long as the installed copy of GTA has the same ID, then it'll show up in the saved games list. Game IDs don't vary per copy from what I see, usually a regional thing.

This is pure speculation though based on faffing about on PSP emu stuff.
  • McLovin85 #26 4 years ago

    @evilfox

semi agree. as I've said about DLC, I've loved Bungie's approach of "free after a period of time" for the Halo stuff. The first Warhawk DLC was a bit disappointing (appropriately 5/10 on here), the second one great.so worth the money. Mass Effect seems to have had a bit of a meh reception to its DLC, and quite right that a 'are we getting our moneys worth?' question is being raised.
although its a world of ifs and maybes until Rockstar land their DLC.

Hang on so what if the gamer is half way through the game and it starts freezing on him... reinstalling will obviously screw up his saves wouldnt it ? Way to go Rockstar!

    no!

game data and save data are two separate things. Game data is the stuff that's installed to your HD, Patches, etc etc. It can't be backed up. Save data isn't included in this and is saved to a different partition, and can be backed up.
  • zuljin #36 4 years ago

    @evilfoxhound
"making you pay for something that should have already been in the game. Unless it's free and then that's a different story."

You do know how this works right? If a developer is offering content for free - it was included in their original budget, and you've already paid for it. Theres no such thing as "free content" (from original developers anyway).

Bastards the lot of them, for wanting to make a profit.
  • monkie_king #37 4 years ago

Well said, zuljin, some people have odd ideas about DLC.

Some of it's clearly a cynical rip-off, like the 360 Katamari stuff, which basically unlocks content already on the disc. But stuff like the CoD4 maps takes months of additional development and testing, beyond the development of the original title.

Buy the stuff that you reckon is worth the money, but don't think you're entitled to free extra content forever just because you bought the game.

  • monkie_king #40 4 years ago

It's actually the DVD spinning that makes the noise, like a PC does when you're ripping a CD. Fans themselves are pretty quiet.

The PS3 is quiet because the BD spins much more slowly. Unfortunately that makes seek times much longer and leads to mandatory installs. Fortunately there's a standard HDD. Unfortunately the HDD makes GTA4 freeze up ...

    Sheesh!

As for which version is "best" - even rockstar have stated the ps3 version has SLIGHTLY better framerate, SLIGHTLY less pop up.

So graphically its SLIGHTLY better - whether you care or not about the slightly is another matter.. but of course the 360 version gets downloadable content.

Personally i bought a ps3 to play this game on.. As I couldnt bare to own the 360 version and be part of the snivelling 360 owning fanboy geek brigade around here..

Is this the best you can do EG ? you went diving into R* forums all just to find something bad about the PS3 ? did you check the 360 section for any (rockstar) advice on how to avoid having RRoD ?

You track gamers 360 leader boards ? customize your EG page with Xbox live ? PS3 version nearly confirmed (630p) ?

  • Darren #58 4 years ago

Been playing GTA IV on my originally-60GB-HDD-but-now-320GB-HDD PS3 all afternoon with no freezing issues, although it has to be said that this game doesn't run as well as the 360 version, which I also got earlier. Although the 360's isn't perfect either, the framerate is dodgier on the PS3 even during the cutscenes and very chuggy ingame. Not game ruining by any means. As for the PS3 version having better anti-aliasing than the 360 version... don't make me laugh... I don't think IGN even know what AA is to be honest!!! LOL

Still a great game on both platforms though and hopefully it will remain a stable one too... :)
  • Yaz #59 4 years ago

Looks like I'm running out of reasons not to own a 360 or PS3 as yet. :)
  • Gurgeh #60 4 years ago

"The man told me that the problem is apparently only effecting the 60 GB version of the Playstation 3, but that it didn't matter than my particular console was a launch console (Yes, I told a little white lie and said my copy was locking up.) He said the problem is not across the board for the 60GB PS3s but rather only impacts some, so their tech folks are working around the clock to try and figure out what is causing the issue.

He did ask me to make sure that my harddrive wasn't full and that I had the latest firmware update, but confessed that that really isn't what's causing most of the problem. He also said that the Xbox 360 is having the "exact same problem," which has further stumped their tech folks.

I asked him if wiping the harddrive and reinstalling the PS3 version would help, as seen on the PS forums, he said I could try but that he hadn't heard of it helping a single person.

He ended the call by saying that they really have no idea when a fix will be coming because they can't figure out what is exactly causing the problem and then once more apologized."

"The PS3 hard drive and CPU should deliver a smoother GTA IV than on Xbox 360, not least because of texture streaming. Less loading, more detail and vibrant colour palette should make PS3 GTA IV stand head and shoulders above the Xbox 360 version. But what about the Xbox 360’s exclusive episodic content? Well, chances are, the PS3 will have similar downloads at some point in the future. If not, we should have PSP connectivity and multiplayer to look forward too. In your face, Microsoft!"

"With a huge, seamless streaming world, data must be constantly read from the disc. The PS3 version, with its required HDD install, loads missions a couple seconds faster and decreases pop-in. The Xbox 360 version can suffer from some very noticeable texture loading, as things like trees, vehicles and building signs will regularly pop-in as one tools about town. It can be distracting, especially during high speed chases..."

"If this were a personal decision, I'd have chosen the PlayStation 3 edition, mostly based on my preference for the DualShock controller and the performance edge."

"For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster." IGN

"planetGTA: Contrary to what many expected, it seems as though the PlayStation 3 version is selling more than the Xbox 360 version at certain large retailers. UK retailer ASDA is reporting that the PS3 version is selling three times more than its rival - the Xbox 360. Over in Australia, EB Games is reporting that while their pre-sales figures show both versions selling fairly close, the PS3 version is in the lead. Another retailer in that country, Gametraders, is saying the PS3 version is selling double than the Xbox 360.

Interesting indeed, I myself - who is a big fan of the Xbox 360 - will be getting the PlayStation 3 version, as I’ve read and heard personally from people who have played the game already that this version is undoubtedly superior to the Xbox 360. Granted, not as much that I would recommend going out to buy a PS3 console if you have a 360 already. Too bad that episodic content is Xbox exclusive, is Take-Two/Rockstar regretting that decision now?"

Why is everyone always having a go at anyone who owns a 360. I have all the new consoles so I have the best of all worlds. For multi format releases I always go for the 360 version, the reason for this is the following

    1. Mulitplayer is better, I know it works, I can have CMB, I can talk privatly to a friend without hassel.
    2. Achievement points ( I love them, my kids love them)
    3. I have rumble on my controller.

The only multi format game I have purchased on the PS3 was the darkness, and that was because my xbox 360 had the ring of death. And the only multi format game I have purchased on the WII was PES2008, because it is fantastic and the controls are awsome.

I think the PS3 could have the potential to be an awsome machine, but until they sort out on-line gaming, xbox always wins on the multi-format front.

Great games on the PS3 though, rachet and glank, Uncharted & Motorstorm.

So stop having a go and people who love the 360, I love all my game consoles for different reasons, but at the moment, 360 wins hands down.

@ Apologie: From the quotes you provided

"Less loading, more detail and vibrant colour palette should make PS3 GTA IV stand head and shoulders above the Xbox 360 version."

    "The 360 has richer colors"

    *Golf Clap*

Look, this entire argument about which is better is just ridiculous. 360 has better framerate, runs at 720p (if you're interested in such things), has a superior multiplayer environment, has achievements and will have DLC in the future. The PS3 has less pop up and slightly better load times providing, of course, you sacrifice a chunk of your hard drive to the install and, for many who have grown up with GTA 3 being a mainly PS2 game, will feel more comfortable on the PS3 pad. When you get right down to it, these all balance each other out with the possible exception of the DLC which could be a killer blow but we won't know that until it's actually released so for now, buy whichever one you want and be happy you've got a great game. Oy.
  • TRACTORBOY1971 #71 4 years ago

Madlax. if you read the complete post, I said xbox 360 wins hand down.

But I have the luxury, which not everyone has, that I own all three, so I can play Halo, I can play the PS3 /Wii Exclusives, but multi format I will always buy on xbox......how much clearer do you want me to be.

Apologie, how old are you exactly?
  • White_Westie #74 4 years ago

I have both 360 and ps3 (and gta iv for both formats)

The ps3 version does look "cleaner" and brigther to me (colours, etc) close up... however the motion blur in the background on the ps3 seems more distracting to me than in the 360 version....(is this because the colours are more "crisp" on the ps3...I am not sure)

The other thing I notice is the framerate on the ps3 is very very slightly unstable framerate compared to the 360 version...

Other thing I did notice on the 360 is pop in is noticeable compared to ps3... but it really is a tough call between them...

Not really had the opportunity to do a detailed anal on them... yet...... but sure I will....

However at the moment, the plus side (for me) goes to the 360 version - mainly because as i type the ps3 version o multiplayer has gone down... (whereas the 360 version hasnt!)....

I know i know why get it for both formats, call it supporting some old friends ;-)

@Apologie: *sigh* re-read your own quotes, both of the ones I used (notice the quotation marks) are from your own post and directly contradict each other. Not the best way to make an argument that and something I'd suggest avoiding in future.

Also, notice the complete lack of any preference one way or the other in my post because I really don't give a toss which one is 'better'. Unless it's game-breakingly bad then system performance is largely irrelevant and used only to score points in some stupid fanboy war that is the bane of every internet gaming forum and which ruins any chance for rational debate and conversation about this hobby.

I do however take comfort in knowing that when the universe is finally swallowed up by a black hole all that's left will be two fanboys clinging to the event horizon arguing over which of their systems resisted the gravitational pull the longest and which produced the more impressive implosion.

I don't hold much hope tho'... I reckon this is a bug in the game engine or something and I hope Rockstar will release a patch real soon.

Deleting and Re-Installing is not a good long term solution IMO.

I had one lockup so far upon buying a hotdog from a street vendor (60gb Aus model).
Had to restart, but no loss so not worried for the moment.

Hold on. Wipe game data? Is that all the progress going to be deleted? That would royally suck in about 40 hours time.

Mine has frozen a few times, just like assassins creed did. Its no biggie though, my only annoyance is the somewhat poor framerate. But i still love you R*...

Got a 60GB EU launch model and have had a couple of white DS3 controllers since Christmas. Been playing GTA for 3-4 hrs with no problems and loving it. All great. Alas, my 360 is not really getting used anymore - One of those things.

The best thing about this thread is that it's weeded out all the XB fanbois - I just love the 'ignore poster' button.

@3William: Game data is different to 'save' data. Backup your saves (JIC) and delete your installed game data. :)

Well I did have a freezing after 20 minutes of playing, game suddenly stopped and I did not have any connection to the console, even the ps-button didnīt work. Then I tried push the ps-button of my BD-controller and bang...it all came alive!
I have 60 Gb launch model and the problem hasnīt happened again but itīs worth trying...

it's like Rockstar don't have launch day consoles to test their games on. Remember what happened with Bully and earlier 360s.

    Sort it aaaat!

I have a 40GB PS3 and I experienced this problem once, the system frooze for like 30 seconds and just when I was about to do a cold reboot the game jumped right back in action....

Come on Rockstar, give us a better fix than jerking arround with HDD re-install...

You can wipe the Game Data in Game Data Utility and you don't loose your game saves.

    Game Saves are stored elsewhere.

I prefer the look and feel of the PS3 version.

Quite simply it's unplayable on my system. 4 freezes, followed the advice.

When I can get the *%*%* thing working, I cant use online as it's down

I'm now playing the 360 version

Who are you, and what have you done with Swam? :D
  • potter73 #90 4 years ago

Has there been any news from R* as to a potential patch.

Also is this only affect NTSC units and copies of the game purchased from Gamestop (retailer in the US) have seen lots of reports of this, but only by gamers in the US (bloke at work has 60gb launch PS3, and it works fine)

Have also seen suggestions that the problem is down to PSN connectivity (which would explain why you don't get any issues if you ensure you are 'offline' before launching game)

Apologies if every1 else know this already (being this slow, you will appreciate that Im also pretty crap at most vid. games lol - so If anyone wants an to whitewash someone online, Im the man to assist lol) but seen this update on one of the forums on PS website

    [link url=http://community.eu. playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message?board.id=62&thre ad.id=732749
    ]http://co mmunity.eu.playstation.com/play...[/link]

So looks like the probs. are more than likely down to the fact that the PSN/ R* servers are having issues (the game, as with Burnout, is more than likely constantly connecting to the net. for stat updates etc)

    @Penguinzoot

Oh it's swam, alright. He's having convulsions & palpitations since he has to play on his hated 360.
Good fortune could come to you, swam, and you'll get a RROD and be rid of the infernal console ;)
  • RustyBullet #92 4 years ago

    @evilfoxhound

That is just stupid to say that GTA can cause the RROD. My Elite is no louder than my PS3 and that is no shit. My PS3 gets hotter than my 360 and live is by far better than PSN. Yes i would gladly pay Ģ40 for the privalage of not having to listen to crapy audio from cheap assed BT Headset and not having to piss arround with freinds lists. PSN has a lot of catching up to do.

My 360 version totally froze this moring, just about to start a mention for Vlad, and it just stopped on the loading screen and wouldn't move on.
It's the first time it's happened in 8 hrs though, and hopefully the last.
  • George-Roper #94 4 years ago

Hmm, just had my first PS3 lockup. Was just running down some stairs, from the train station.

    Not good.
  • Gaol #95 4 years ago

Had one freeze in 6-8 hrs play while doing the sixaxis bike tutorial. Came alive after about 20 secs.

Look, if we want to do something about this questionable journalism, we have to unify

All who agree that GTA IV's 10/10 score (and all the other high press scores) is just wrong, join this group.

The fantastic GTA IV is not perfect group!

  • Cryguy #97 4 years ago

I've had one freeze-up so far, lots of police sirens and action on screen, I had just jumped out of a car and was running away... Mine's only 40gb console though.... Mine didn't unfreeze either.... :(
  • infoxicated #98 4 years ago

Got it yesterday, got to 'bleed out', saved it, this morning it wont load.

    What a pile of shit.
  • Grayvern #99 4 years ago

I just loaded up the PS3 and it auto patched. Beware if you were just having network trouble with the PS3 crashes you dont want this, it seems to make the PS3 aliasing 10 times more noticable.
