Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis Review

Wii Review by Ellie Gibson

24 October, 2007

It's nearly a year since we got a Wii, and still the people come. The ex-gamers, the non-gamers, the women, the children, the Dads. "Have you got one, then?" they say. They "don't normally like games", but they've seen the Wii on telly and it looks like fun. They ask if they can come round and play it, and we say yes, and we know exactly how things will go.

It'll start off with Wii Sports tennis, because that's the one they've seen on telly, and everyone will like it and laugh and knock things over. Then onto boxing, but it's a bit tiring so just one or two goes. Then bowling is enjoyed by everyone except the person who can't work out how to chuck the ball properly. It goes on a bit too long. Then golf. At least one person, probably the one who was rubbish at bowling, gives up after two goes and starts reading the paper. The match drags on. By the time it's over everyone's just about had enough, which is probably for the best as all that's left is shonky old baseball.

That's our experience, anyway, and in our experience the Wii has needed a really good sports game for a long time now. A game as simple as Wii tennis in concept, so those who aren't regular gamers can pick it up quickly. But a game which also offers depth, challenge and reward. Well, Rockstar's gone and done it.

Back once again

'Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis' Screenshot 1

Hello, Liu Ping! We've missed you! Even though Jesper's better.

They've done it by taking a game which was great on Xbox 360 and making it great on Wii. Table Tennis surprised many people when it first turned up, and not just because it wasn't full of murder. It was simple, but well designed, combining brilliant gameplay with pleasing visuals and sponky music. It didn't offer a dozen modes or hours of fun for the solo player or billions of options for choosing the colour of your character's eyelashes, and it was priced accordingly. And, as Tom reported, it was great fun.

Sensibly, they haven't mucked about with much other than the controls for the Wii version. Liu Ping, Jesper, Kumi and all the others are back, the venues are the same, the music is just as sponky. As you'd expect the graphics aren't quite as shiny and detailed as those in the 360 game, but the clean, contemporary visual style is still there.

So to the controls. A sports game like this might seem like an obvious fit for the Wii, but it can all go horribly wrong if the control system isn't right - see Brunswick Pro Bowling for details. Luckily the one in Table Tennis Wii works perfectly.

Unsurprisingly you swing the remote to wave your bat about. Serving is done by swinging the remote up, then left or right when the little black bar reaches the top of the coloured meter. Pressing the various directions on the d-pad adds various types of spin. You press the A button for a soft shot, B for a focus shot. And you charge up your shots by holding down the spin button as early as possible.

Apart from the serving bit, you won't probably won't need to explain any of the above to someone picking up the remote for the first time, even if they've never played the 360 version. Or any games at all. You don't even have to worry about moving your character around the table; this is done automatically, and effectively. It's all perfectly intuitive and easy to grasp.

Pick your own

'Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis' Screenshot 2

Things might not look quite as crisp as in the 360 version, but it's still a very nice looking game.

But for those who prefer to do a bit more work, Rockstar has included two extra control system options, which make use of the Nunchuk. Select Control Freak and you can use the analogue stick to move your character around yourself. Alternatively there's Sharp Shooter - this time, the stick directs the placement of the ball.

Control Freak is the more pointless of the two systems as the AI does a perfectly good job of moving characters when you're using the Standard controls. Sharp Shooter might appeal to those who are used to playing tennis games with sticks, but it seems to miss the point of the Wii's motion-sensing capabilities.

Really, you're best off sticking with the Standard remote controls and leaving the Nunchuk alone. It's not really necessary and will confuse your Mum, and more enthusiastic players are likely to end up whipping themselves around the crotch a lot.

If you're used to playing Table Tennis on 360, you might be surprised at how long it takes to adjust to the Wii controls, even if you're really good at the other version. Like, really good. Say, good enough to win an Xbox 360 in a Rockstar-organised Table Tennis tournament only the Xbox 360 gets burglarised last week while you're out at your own 30th birthday party because you live in Lewisham land of THIEVING SCUMBOS who are probably shifting it down the Bird In Hand right now in exchange for pay-as-you-go vouchers. Anyway.

Pressing the d-pad to add spin while swinging your arm around can feel a little fiddly at first, and there's the timing of the charging system to get used to. But it won't be long before it's second nature and you're taking part in good long rallies. There are moments when you'll feel there isn't quite the same level of control as you'd get with a traditional pad, but the pay-off is the greater sense of physicality and freedom the remote offers. And even if you're not using the Nunchuk, you'll feel like you have much greater control over your shots and ball placement than with a game like Wii tennis.

Let's Off Line

'Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis' Screenshot 3

Like badminton, table tennis is loved by ladies who can't really be bothered to do a proper sport the world over. You're allowed to say that if you are one.

So the physical sensation of playing Table Tennis on the Wii is very different, as you'd expect. But the gameplay is just as good as it is on 360 - it's easy to pick up, but you're rewarded for experimenting with different shots and you feel like your performance is improving with each match you play. There is, however, one glaring disparity between the two versions: the Wii game doesn't have an online mode.

It would have been nice, yes. But is this really such a big deal? Standing in your living room swinging a remote about on your own always feels a bit odd and strangely tiring. It's hard to imagine knowing the other character on screen is being controlled by a real live person would make a huge difference. And while Table Tennis is fun to play over Xbox Live, it's always more fun if the person you're shouting at is sitting next to you anyway.

Table Tennis is a social game, which is why the single-player mode is so limited, and why no one bothers to play it on their own for more than an hour or two. As Nintendo never tires of telling us, the Wii is a social console, designed for people to enjoy together, in the same room. So while an online mode would certainly have been welcome, its omission doesn't mean Table Tennis Wii isn't worth a purchase.

It most certainly is, especially if you're at the point where you want to stab yourself in the eyes with both Wii remotes every time a friend says his girlfriend wants to come round and play the tennis game and by the way have you got the other one where you have to feed the puppies. Table Tennis Wii is the ideal alternative to Wii Sports. It's a highly enjoyable, well-designed game with simple appeal and real depth. It's the game the Wii's been waiting for - well, one of them, at least.

8/10

I was put off this game by a 6.5 review I read which claimed that the Wiimote controls are not all that good and now EG have reviewed the game and given it an 8. Me is confused. Still with the number of other games out pre-Christmas that I want, I wouldn't have been buying it until next year anyway. Might bide my time and pick it up once it hits the sub-£20 bargain bins before checking it out. Shame the Wii doesn't allow you to try playable demos like on the PS3 and 360 as the quality of many of its games is completely dependent on how you get on with the controls and that's something you just cannot guage from a review.

It's badminton not badmington. It's only for lazies who don't want to do a real sport if you want to play it like that. A proper game of badminton is intense and far from standing about hitting a shuttle in turns.

A colleague brought this game to work, but I couldn't get to grips with the controls in the short time I played with it.

I was expecting Wii Tennis like controls, but I came out disappointed discovering you can actually swing 2 seconds before you hit the ball and basically queue up your swing. It felt unnatural.

Perhaps I need to give it more time, but I didn't quite like it.

Burglars are evil. Somebody should do something about them.

I'm mildly colourblind and could never figure out on the 360 version what spin type my opponent was sending, which made me rubbish at a sport I can play reasonably well in real life.

I expect this will be even harder with low res graphics :(

me too. went to a house party in June where someone brought a Wii along, the evening followed that opening paragraph perfectly. Perhaps the most telling thing is that that person then left their Wii round the hosts house and hasnt picked it up since. The host and his girlfriend were initially very taken with the Wii but he has since confessed its just sat gathering dust since and he's glad they didnt buy one.

the spin thing sounds weird in this as I was wondering the other day how the spin would work on this.

Yeah I'm not convinced by the spin control either - surely a rotation of the wrist during your swing to mimick real life would be better?

Anway this sounds pretty fun despite that.

I pre-ordered Table Tennis then almost got cold feel with some negative reviews last week.

I'm glad I didn't cancel, it's a good game. I'm in wholehearted agreement with the review.

I think the review does a bit of disservice to the Wii.

While I'm sure this situation has happened for many, as EuroGamer is supposed to be run by true gaming enthusiasts, I would have thought they would have had at least some more titles to show off what the Wii can do, like Wario Ware, Trauma Centre.

And in defence of what I feel is a slight slur of the Wii, in comparison, no one has come round and asked "have I got one" as regards my Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. Not even gaming friends.

The lack of online makes this a game a 7. I'm surprised the reviewer has let Rockstar/Nintendo off on this. To define 'social' gaming as exclusive of online gaming is utter garbage. What's your Mii character for then? I'd love to be able to play my Mii online against others, be it Wii Sports, Play, Table Tennis, whatever.
The whole Mii interaction and online side needs to be developed to at least PSN levels. Then the Wii will be unstoppable. Even more so.

I agree. I bought this last week and have only played a couple of times but you can play the shot before the ball gets to you (queued shots)... wtf?

Also, dunno if it's just me but the controls are not that great. It's not like Wii Tennis where you can hit from left to right or vice versa. You kind of have to hold the Wiimote in front of you and swat it in the direction you want to play it. Which makes sense, it is a table tennis game and not tennis. But the ball doesnt always go in the direction I play it.

That said you can get some whopping great smashes which are satisfying.

I've only been playing this on my own so far. I think I need to try it with a friend. But initial impressions are not great.

I bought the game last week and I think it is great; I'm standing poised as if there was a table tennis table right in front of me. This game gives you a hell of a workout; after a few games in Tournament mode I’m absolutely knackered.

It has been mentioned on the forum about the lag between your movements and moving early to make a shot etc. I certainly haven’t noticed any lag and I do move early but more in anticipation to where I think my opponent will hit the ball.

When I seen that it was Ellie who had the honour of doing the review I feared the worst; I was expecting a score of 2/10. 8/10 is quite generous; though it could have scored a 9/10 if the game had online options.

I don't think a review coming from edge or gamespot automaticallly means it's a cack review. You just need to find a game reviewing site that generally gives scores which seem to reflect your own opinion about those games. If someone disagrees with EG (or specific reviewer) in 80% of the reviews, then it's probably not the best site (reviewer) for that particular person.

Online not important?

YEAH RIGHT. Online would be full of people who are into the game.

Should I be dragging my 'don't-give-a-shit-about-games' mates round to play this? All they'll say is:

'Do you play Pro Evo?'

'I've only got Pro Evo / Tiger Woods for my PS2 / PC'

WTF!?!?!

-1 or 2 for no online mode if it's important to you.

After putting a good 10-12 hours into this game i couldnt agree more with the score. Once you get used to the controls and the timing, its a game you can just pickup and have a quick match every now and then and its great for that. The graphics are good for the wii, sound is top notch and the budget price makes it a very appealing package. The accuracy might be a little off compared to using the analog stick, but its a lot more fun using the wiimote.

Congrats to eurogamer for seeing passed the timing issue, i dont mind swinging before the ball gets to you, its exactly how the 360 version was, you had to pre-determine your next shot and that was the key to winning points and its carried over to the wii version just fine.

I totally agree with figaro7; many of the reviews that I've read have marked the game score low due to the unresponsive controls? There's a learning curve and once you master the controls then the game is plain sailing. I don't think that Rockstar could have made the game-play any better; the only real problem with the game is the longevity.
