I was put off this game by a 6.5 review I read which claimed that the Wiimote controls are not all that good and now EG have reviewed the game and given it an 8. Me is confused. Still with the number of other games out pre-Christmas that I want, I wouldn't have been buying it until next year anyway. Might bide my time and pick it up once it hits the sub-£20 bargain bins before checking it out. Shame the Wii doesn't allow you to try playable demos like on the PS3 and 360 as the quality of many of its games is completely dependent on how you get on with the controls and that's something you just cannot guage from a review.

It's badminton not badmington. It's only for lazies who don't want to do a real sport if you want to play it like that. A proper game of badminton is intense and far from standing about hitting a shuttle in turns.

A colleague brought this game to work, but I couldn't get to grips with the controls in the short time I played with it.

I was expecting Wii Tennis like controls, but I came out disappointed discovering you can actually swing 2 seconds before you hit the ball and basically queue up your swing. It felt unnatural.

Perhaps I need to give it more time, but I didn't quite like it.

Loved the start of this review. That is exactly the experience I've had with the Wii so far, to the letter.

Burglars are evil. Somebody should do something about them.

I'm mildly colourblind and could never figure out on the 360 version what spin type my opponent was sending, which made me rubbish at a sport I can play reasonably well in real life.

I expect this will be even harder with low res graphics :(

me too. went to a house party in June where someone brought a Wii along, the evening followed that opening paragraph perfectly. Perhaps the most telling thing is that that person then left their Wii round the hosts house and hasnt picked it up since. The host and his girlfriend were initially very taken with the Wii but he has since confessed its just sat gathering dust since and he's glad they didnt buy one.

the spin thing sounds weird in this as I was wondering the other day how the spin would work on this.

Yeah I'm not convinced by the spin control either - surely a rotation of the wrist during your swing to mimick real life would be better?

Anway this sounds pretty fun despite that.

I pre-ordered Table Tennis then almost got cold feel with some negative reviews last week.

I'm glad I didn't cancel, it's a good game. I'm in wholehearted agreement with the review.

I think the review does a bit of disservice to the Wii.

While I'm sure this situation has happened for many, as EuroGamer is supposed to be run by true gaming enthusiasts, I would have thought they would have had at least some more titles to show off what the Wii can do, like Wario Ware, Trauma Centre.

And in defence of what I feel is a slight slur of the Wii, in comparison, no one has come round and asked "have I got one" as regards my Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. Not even gaming friends.

The lack of online makes this a game a 7. I'm surprised the reviewer has let Rockstar/Nintendo off on this. To define 'social' gaming as exclusive of online gaming is utter garbage. What's your Mii character for then? I'd love to be able to play my Mii online against others, be it Wii Sports, Play, Table Tennis, whatever.
The whole Mii interaction and online side needs to be developed to at least PSN levels. Then the Wii will be unstoppable. Even more so.

I agree. I bought this last week and have only played a couple of times but you can play the shot before the ball gets to you (queued shots)... wtf?

Also, dunno if it's just me but the controls are not that great. It's not like Wii Tennis where you can hit from left to right or vice versa. You kind of have to hold the Wiimote in front of you and swat it in the direction you want to play it. Which makes sense, it is a table tennis game and not tennis. But the ball doesnt always go in the direction I play it.

That said you can get some whopping great smashes which are satisfying.

I've only been playing this on my own so far. I think I need to try it with a friend. But initial impressions are not great.

Saw this being demoed on some huge Rockstar branded table tennis tables at the shopping mall. It looked really good and was very popular.

Glad ecosse ain't here to be smug all over this.

LOL that opening is spot on, it's been in danger of having PSPeyetes, i.e. "lets convert this to the Wii"

Wii demand more Wii specific games that are fun to play like this and not just gimics.

That I thought Eurogamer would have more than one Wii game and would have done more to get their friends enthused about their hobby.

I bought the game last week and I think it is great; I'm standing poised as if there was a table tennis table right in front of me. This game gives you a hell of a workout; after a few games in Tournament mode I’m absolutely knackered.

It has been mentioned on the forum about the lag between your movements and moving early to make a shot etc. I certainly haven’t noticed any lag and I do move early but more in anticipation to where I think my opponent will hit the ball.

When I seen that it was Ellie who had the honour of doing the review I feared the worst; I was expecting a score of 2/10. 8/10 is quite generous; though it could have scored a 9/10 if the game had online options.

I don't think a review coming from edge or gamespot automaticallly means it's a cack review. You just need to find a game reviewing site that generally gives scores which seem to reflect your own opinion about those games. If someone disagrees with EG (or specific reviewer) in 80% of the reviews, then it's probably not the best site (reviewer) for that particular person.

I want this, but with SO many other games out, it will just have to wait till sometime next year!

Then i probably won't bother buying it anyway, which is ashame...

I have the 360 though, which kinda softens the blow.

Online not important?

YEAH RIGHT. Online would be full of people who are into the game.

Should I be dragging my 'don't-give-a-shit-about-games' mates round to play this? All they'll say is:

'Do you play Pro Evo?'

'I've only got Pro Evo / Tiger Woods for my PS2 / PC'

WTF!?!?!

-1 or 2 for no online mode if it's important to you.

After putting a good 10-12 hours into this game i couldnt agree more with the score. Once you get used to the controls and the timing, its a game you can just pickup and have a quick match every now and then and its great for that. The graphics are good for the wii, sound is top notch and the budget price makes it a very appealing package. The accuracy might be a little off compared to using the analog stick, but its a lot more fun using the wiimote.

Congrats to eurogamer for seeing passed the timing issue, i dont mind swinging before the ball gets to you, its exactly how the 360 version was, you had to pre-determine your next shot and that was the key to winning points and its carried over to the wii version just fine.

I totally agree with figaro7; many of the reviews that I've read have marked the game score low due to the unresponsive controls? There's a learning curve and once you master the controls then the game is plain sailing. I don't think that Rockstar could have made the game-play any better; the only real problem with the game is the longevity.
