Rock Band dev doing Beatles game News

PlayStation 2 Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Tom Bramwell

30 October, 2008

MTV, Apple Corps and Harmonix have announced that they are collaborating on "a brand new videogame featuring the music of the iconic Beatles" due out next Christmas.

Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos said the game was a "dream project", and that it will be a "new, full-blown custom game title production built from the ground up". It won't be a Rock Band game, either - it's a brand new Beatles game.

Jeff Jones, CEO of Apple Corps, added that the Beatles game would span the entire run of Beatles music, though not necessarily include every track, and Rigopulos said that "there will of course be interactive performance of the Beatles music", and that there will be new gameplay elements too.

The parties involved wouldn't say whether there will be new peripherals, but it sounds like it will work with Rock Band kit. Rigopulos said that peripherals that worked with other games - i.e. Guitar Hero - would work with the Beatles game to the same degree they do with Rock Band.

"We want to take players on an experiential journey through the band's history," he said. "A visual exploration of the Beatles' imagery is a big part of this project," Rigopulos said. "With apologies...there's very little that we're ready to say about the game itself."

So it proved, as the parties on the teleconference call refused to answer any questions about platforms, gameplay mechanics or anything else really. For example, "Interoperability with Rock Band is something we're not ready to talk about yet," Rigopulos said in response to a question about DLC possibilities.

MTV Networks president Van Toffler said, "We're going to provide the ultimate platform for new generations of fans to start their own love affair with the Beatles". He said the game has the blessing of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison. He added that Giles Martin is doing music production - the son of George Martin.

"The thing that we're trying to keep to is for people to play the songs as though they're playing the originals. So we will be adhering to the original mixes my father and the Beatles did, and trying to preserve the sound quality as much as possible," said Martin.

It was later added that this is the exclusive Beatles tie-up for music games. Toffler said we should "stay tuned for details over the coming months".

Apart from the fact that I'm not a Beatles fan, it sounds like a fun idea. I don't think this game will actually reach many Beatles fans unless it's on the Wii or DS however.

Sounds like "Rock Band: The Beatles" to me, something I hate Activision for with GH:Aerosmith :/

Yeah I hope its not Rock Band: The Beatles. They've said it won't be and that it'll be brand new but still...how different can it be?

Either way I'll be getting it

Hmm... I would have preferred this to be Rock Band tracks, I think. It'll be interesting to see where they're going with it.

Just having Beatles tracks is enough for me. Better than AOR tosh like Foreigner and Boston. Couldn't really care less about 'buying Ringo a new outfit' like gubbins tho.

@dazrichards.

They wouldn't make as much money if they just did DLC though. This is Apple Corps we're talking about here, the greedy sods.

@ Lebowski

Why do you think Apple Corps is greedy?
Are you perhaps getting confused between Apple Corps and Apple Inc?

Apple Corps is the record label the Beatles set up
Apple Inc. is the massive PC rival, with Mac etc.

Apple Corps are probably even greedier than Apple Inc. They have VERY strict control over what the Beatles IP can and can't be used for, although I don't blame them.

This game probably will be quite distinct from Rock Band or Guitar Hero though, and I picked that up from the comment about the graphics being distinct.

The two existing games focus on a game mechanic that has to cover all different songs, if not genres, from different bands. Beatles music is from a very distinctive band with their own visual styles and methods of songwriting. It could be a whole Beatles experience, rather than just pretending you're in a covers band.

I do enjoy rockband/guitar hero games but nothing actually beats playing real instraments, and the time and effort you put into playing on these games you can actually get pretty good if you put the time into a real guitar... also a beginner guitar and amp is also cheaper!

I am only saying this as I play in a Beatles cover band, and not trying to sound like a preaching cock.

edit spelling.

How can Apple Corps be greedy if they are famously reluctant to sell the Beatles brand?

Am I the only one who sees this news as kind of sad? It's a games site I suppose so I guess that's fair enough if I am.

I expect to see "I'm Only Sleeping" in a Nytol advert soon, alongside Johnny Rotten selling me butter.

If they're going to make it an authentic Beatles experience, then there needs to be a REAL mode where you can only hear screaming while you're playing.
