Rock Band available on App Store News

iPhone News by Robert Purchese

20 October, 2009

Music trio EA, Harmonix and MTV have launched the iPhone version of Rock Band on the App Store.

The game costs £5.99, and brings Bluetooth band multiplayer to the iPhone for the first time. Up to four people can play together, tapping along to tunes.

There are 20 songs, ranging from Blink-182 to Lynyrd Skynyrd, plus an in-game music store to bolster your collection at. Facebook is integrated, too.

Head over to the App Store Rock Band page to buy the game and find out more.

Pricier per song that the other releases. That isn't everything though.

That review is ok, but the reviewer is completely off the mark regarding the vocals. His/her (Tracy - I'm going to assume she from now on) attitude is summed up by the quote "Instead of seizing the potential for compelling vocal play with the built-in microphone on iPhone".

Really? She thinks that singing out loud into your phone would be considered "compelling" by any significant number of iPhone owners? I couldn't disagree more strongly.

Now the actual implementation they chose for the singing mechanic may not be very good (I don't know either way), but I think the decision to not require the player to sing was absolutely the right one.

Its a shame that the reviewer keeps harping on about the lame vocals, as it spoils the tone of an otherwise good review, and suggests the reviewer doesn't really understand the portable market.

I dunno if its because I'm using an older iPhone (3G) but the game is stuttery, add that to the fact the highway doesn't exactly give you the greatest amount of forewarning of what's coming the game itself just feels incredibly mediocre. The presnetation is incredible though.

I've been playing Rock Band Unplugged on the PSP recently, and that is top banana. Essentially Amplitude in a posh new frock, but very entertaining all the same.

The price gouging continues...

4 copies of the game + 4 iPod Touchs/iPhones = over £800 worth just too play Rock Band! :)

@jim1975 - 'great timing for apple to allow in app purchases the same week as Rock Band iphone comes out.'

They've always allowed in-app purchases for paid-for apps. They just extended this too the free apps.

Is the smiley on the end your way of saying "I know this statement is nonsense"?

Unless you get a tiny little plastic guitar to wail on, this is pointless

I love how they linked to the Electronic Arts page and not the Rock Band page.

I might actually try this. Never liked the Tap Tap way of doing it.

I agree about the review being off about vocals. I've been playing Rock Band on the iPhone and vocals basically work like another instrument, it's not perfect but who wants to hear people singing into their iPhones? At least this way 4 people can play the game on the train with headphones and no-one would hear a sound.

It makes perfect sense on drums btw, to be using touch screen. Vocal track is daft, but didn't buy it for that. Drums and geeeetarr all the way.

Tracy's done tonnes of iPhone reviews before (he's that section's review editor IIRC) although I'd agree he focused on the wrong complaint this time around.

People who think these games are pointless without a plastic guitar = people who've never played Amplitude.

It's awesome. That's all I have to say on the matter. My only real complaint is that it seems a bit easy so far (although this may change), and I'm having trouble activating overdrive without losing my multiplier, seems to require a fairly hefty shake to get it going.

I'm sure he has plenty of experience, which is what makes the comments all the more of a shame in this case. They "suggest" a lack of knowledge, that is in fact present. Anyway, its not a big deal, so I shall stop harping on about it.

I love the Rock Band games but I regret wasting £6 on this at the moment. It seems that my taps are not synching up with the songs thus I keep failing, which 3 times out of 4 has resulted in the game crashing to the 'desktop', so to speak.

Either it didn't install correctly or it's in urgent need of a patch.
