Rise of the Argonauts misses November News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

3 November, 2008

Codemasters has told Eurogamer that action role-playing game Rise of the Argonauts has slipped out of November. The plan, however, is still to launch before Christmas.

That leaves a rather small window in early December - in a Christmas period already stuffed with two of the biggest RPGs of this generation. No reason was given for the hold up.

The publisher also explained there will be no demo, as chopping the sprawling story into pieces for the sake of a 10 or 15 minute sampler would apparently not do the game justice.

Rise of the Argonauts is in development at Liquid Entertainment for simultaneous release on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

As the name suggests, the story centres on Jason and his collection of Argonauts (followers upon the Argo ship), as they sail around mythical Ancient Greece in search of the legendary Golden Fleece artefact to resurrect Jason's murdered wife.

Liquid has taken the reinterpretation a step further than most, both in terms of the setting and the genre mechanics in use; most laborious RPG traits have been sidelined in favour of keeping the pace up and ensuring players stay immersed and not stuck in numerous menus.

There's an interesting and spontaneous combat system at the heart of the action, too.

Head over to our Rise of the Argonauts gamepage for much more information and all of the assets released so far.

The concept really interests me, but its another one of these games where we've seen barely any coverage and its likely because its flawed in some terrible, terrible way. Still got my fingers crossed that this'll be good though

I'm with you andy. Really looking forward to it. Here's hoping it's a (somewhat) sleeper hit instead of being flawed...

It basically takes a couple of weeks at Sony/Microsoft for Standards checks, so if they submit mid-november it should still be ready for early december. A couple of more weeks in testing could mean another 10 builds and with the necessary testing and overtime (and pizza/coke!) it should be in a decent state.

It then takes also nearly three weeks from Sony/MS approval to go through duplication and distribution before it can get onto the shelves (for a global release that is).

You are right, that's if they don't start duplication and distribution whilst is still at Sony/Microsoft :)

It would be silly to release the game now anyway with the glut of current AAA titles. It might do better pushing it to begining of December.
