The top ones look better, in every shot (not all are comparable, though).
  • itamae #5 5 years ago

I prefer the PS3 shots to be honest, the 360 ones are far too dark for my liking (merely a bad chioce of screenshots or am I missing something important?). Apart from that though, I can't tell them apart.

The comparisons of Ridge Racer 6 vs 7 seem to leave out the fact that there are waves under bridges that MOVE in the Xbox 360 version, while the waves don't move at all in the Playstation 3 version--they just remain still, like a cutout picture...and that SUCKS.

Also, it is a MAJOR problem when there are sailboats MISSING from the Playstation 3 version, because the Playstation 3 can only display 275,000,000 polygons per second compared to 500,000,000 polygons per second for the Xbox 360. That is the whole reason why the Playstation 3 version does not have the ability to maintain a steady framerate at 60 frames per second when the resolution is 1080p.

The Xbox 360 upscales the resolution to 1080p and maintains the resolution at 60 frames per second fine.

Also, this article fails to mention that Ridge Racer 6 was developed on Pre-Alpha development kits for the Xbox 360, which only gave developers access to one of the three CPU cores on the Xbox 360. This means the developers at Namco only had access to one-sixth of the General Purpose CPU power for the Xbox 360 while making Ridge Racer 6.

On the other hand, the Playstation 3 was delayed, which means that Ridge Racer 7 was released after the developers at Namco had access to the Final Development kit for the PS3 for over SIX MONTHS, which allowed the developers to have access to 100% of the power of the PS3.

In the stages that appear on both systems, the Xbox 360 version had more detail, better lighting, smoother framerates, and faster load times.

In this first picture comparison, it appears "brighter" on the PS3 and "darker" on the Xbox 360, just like the person comparing the games points out. But what he fails to mention is that Ridge Racer 6 has a wide variety of times of day that you can race. The Xbox 360 looks GREAT in those night stages because of the vastly superior lighting of the Xbox 360. Take a look at that tower on the light with the green lighting for proof of that.

Read the review for both games. The Xbox 360 version is rated higher, and the review for Ridge Racer 7 makes it clear that the Xbox 360 version has smoother graphics.

Also, the article here fails to mention that the Playstation 3 version of Ridge Racer does NOT allow you to use a headset to talk online to the people you are playing online with, like the Xbox 360 version of the game does.

Ridge Racer 7 is just like all of the games from EA Sports, and 2K Sports, and Call of Duty 3, and just about every third-party game for the Playstation 3; it does NOT allow you to talk online with the people you are playing with while you are actually playing the game. The Xbox 360 version of Ridge Racer, and all of the EA Sports games, and all of the 2K Sports games, and Call of Duty 3, and just about every third-party Xbox 360 game lets you talk online with the people you are playing online with.

The reason for this is because the Xbox 360 comes with an online headset, which includes a headphone and a microphone. The Playstation 3 does not come with anything like that at all. As a result, third parties are not motivated to include voice-chat features like that in the games, since Sony doesn’t support the feature themselves.

Ridge Racer is much more fun on the Xbox 360, simply because you can talk with the people you are racing with online, and it adds UNLIMITED replay value!

The remaining two cores of the 360 are responsible for the lighting then, I assume?
  • SomaticSense #8 5 years ago

I really can't see where opinions come into it, the top shots consistently look better.

There's no comparison really. Looking at the first pic, the lighting looks better, the buildings in the background look more detailed, the car looks a lot better, and the paint on the car gives off a much better looking metallic sheen. The bottom pic looks almost 'cartoony' in comparision.

edit: For those complaining about the 360 version loooking 'darker', that has absolutely nothing to do with the graphical abilities of the two consoles. Have you noticed that it's because the two versions are set during different times of the day? Look at the sky........

With that in mind, the 360 version looks considerably better in all but the last two shots.

the buildings in the background look more detailed

That's not quite true. Same polygon count, I'd say, but the PS3 version looks sharper - just look at the iron balcony grating. Looks like a mess on the 360.

It's the lighting that does it for me, which looks flat on the PS3.
  • Scimarad #10 5 years ago

I can't believe anyone can prefer the 360 shots - Are you lot blind?
  • Tomo #11 5 years ago

Jesus Christ. If people get worked up about these differences between these games then they are sad cunts.

It's like arguing about the difference between magnolia and off-white. Fucking hell people, get a grip.
  • mike_mgoblue #12 5 years ago

    itamae,

The Pre-Alpha development kits that first-gen Xbox 360 games like Ridge Racer 6 used only allowed the developers to have access to ONE of the CPU cores...and not only that. Each of the three CPU cores has two threads. The Pre-Alpha development kit only allowed the developers to access ONE thread on only ONE of the CPU cores!!!

That is why the developers only had access to one-sixth of the Xbox 360 General Purpose CPU power.

The superior lighting of the Xbox 360 version of Ridge Racer is the result of the superior Xbox 360 GPU from ATI.

And by the way, these screenshots of Ridge Racer are TERRIBLE, because they are NOT taken during the same time of day!!!

If you are going to compare screenshots and levels side by side, they NEED to be taken during the same time of day!!!
  • Scimarad #13 5 years ago

You honestly don't think this is a significant difference?
  • knocker #14 5 years ago

@Scimarad To be honest ... no. This is so painfully subjective. The 360 pictures are darker - but if it's meant to be night-time racing then it's more realistic.

I thought the 360 buildings looked smoother - but when I zoomed in I thought the opposite.

Off-white and magnolia. Good analogy. And that's spending a few minutes looking at a picture that will be on your screen about 0.3 of a second during play.
  • UncleLou #15 5 years ago

You honestly don't think this is a significant difference?

It is. The Xbox version looks like it's night. On the PS3, the lighting looks pale and flat.
  • DUFFKING #16 5 years ago

I think the PS3 version looks sharper but the 360 version has better lighting, pS3 looks flat.
  • monkey-ken-wizard #17 5 years ago

    both look a bit shit
  • smelly #18 5 years ago

Im sorry. But when i'm zooming around a track in a racing game. I dont give a flying feck if the pixels look slightly more or less crisp on another platform.
  • mike_mgoblue #19 5 years ago

    I agree,

When I am in a racing game, I want a smooth framerate, awesome lighting, waves that MOVE under the bridges, and extra sailboats to look at in the bay areas.

Those are advantages that the Xbox 360 version offers, that make it superior to the Playstation 3 version.

All you need to do is play the game, and see the framerate get choppy on the Playstation 3 version, and you will realize which version is instantly better.

Also, you need to remember that the Xbox 360 version offers Rumble and Vibration technology in the controller. It is cool when you crash into other cars and feel a BANG, or slam on your breaks and feel the controller vibrate, or accellerate your car and feel the controller take off in your hand. Playstation 3 doesn't offer that because it's controller doesn't vibrate.

Perhaps the biggest difference in the game is the way that the Playstation 3 version does NOT offer you the ability to use a headset to use Online Voice-Chat while playing the game.

The Xbox 360 version lets you use the Headset included with the Xbox 360, and it lets you talk to all of the people you are playing online with. This adds a lot of strategy to the game, and it makes playing the game SO MUCH MORE FUN!!!

It is like that with games like Call of Duty 3, and the EA Sports games and the 2K Sports games, too. Those games don't let you talk online with Voice Chat on the Playstation 3.

But, all of those games DO let you talk online with voice-chat on the Xbox 360. Being able to tell your allies where to go in to attack the enemies in games like Call of Duty 3 is VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Plus, the Playstation 3 version of Call of Duty 3 and so many other games have choppy framerates. The new version of MLB 2K7 on the Playstation 3 has a framerate that is so choppy that it really should not have been released.

    Most. Discriminating. Gamer. Ever! :-D

Thanks for cheering me up this early in the morning.

    You're missing the point entirely.

Graphics are important to some extent but the difference between those shots is absolutely minimal. Sure they look a little different, and oh, I can just about make out some trees on the mountains in the PS3 shots but come on - one hardly looks any better than the other. It's not even as big a step as Composite -> SCART for gawds sakes. I think a lot of people seem to cream themselves over a few brighter pixels. It's no wonder Sony/Toshiba can force HDSHINYNESS54GIGAFLOPS-MAXOVERDRIV down so many throats so quickly after the DVD.
  • Tomo #22 5 years ago

Not if I'm going to have to fork out another £280/£425 quid for that luxury.

"...It's like I said, if everybody had the same attitude as you, we'd still be playing the NES...."

As a stalwart of the NES gaming community, I am outraged at your insinuation! Rad Racer is a fine example of a graphically superior racing game with precision gameplay and we should remember the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!".

Of course, one can only pay tribute to the classic that is Pole Position on the VCS. I mean, we got like... 20 times more pixels in that that baby!

Not enough sail boats in the bay area though.
  • Tomo #25 5 years ago

To clarify - I'd far sooner by a 360 with the amount of awesome games it has compared to the PS3, which has bugger all (at the moment). This slight graphical gap between the two consoles doesn't make me salivate for the PS3, it just makes me think you're far better off getting a 360.
  • mike_mgoblue #26 5 years ago

The Xbox 360 version of the game lets you use the headset included with the system to talk online with the people you are playing with.

The Playstation 3 version of the game does NOT let you use any form of headset at all to communicate with people while playing the game. There is NO Online Voice-Chat in the Playstation 3 version.

It is the same with Call of Duty 3, and all those EA Sports Games and 2K Sports games. They don't include Online Voice Chat with the Playstation 3 versions.

The Xbox 360 versions of third-party games DO include Online Voice-Chat, because the Xbox 360 comes with a headset, and the third-parties are motivated to include that feature.

Sony doesn't include a headset, so the third-parties don't bother to support that feature most of the time.

Just try playing games like Call of Duty 3, Ridge Racer, or Football on the Xbox 360 when you can talk to the person you are playing with, and then try playing the Playstation 3 versions where you CAN'T talk while playing. It makes a HUGE difference, and that is why the Playstation 3 versions are NOT as good.

Let's hope that is mentioned in the future comparisons of the games appearing on both systems! Just like how the Xbox 360 versions of the games have Rumble features, but the Playstation 3 versions don't!
