Mortal Kombat: Armageddon Review

PlayStation 2 Review by Luke Albiges

2 November, 2006

Oh, how times have changed. Violence in media is now far more accepted than it was when Mortal Kombat first hit the arcades, but despite the fact that the world has moved on around it, Midway's once-celebrated fighting series has barely moved an inch in the fourteen years since its introduction. The comedy violence still raises a chuckle now and again, sure, but just as the world's attitude to violence has moved on, so have people's expectations of what a fighting game should deliver.

Armageddon welcomes back every character ever to have graced the series but with a roster sixty characters strong, don't expect any kind of real balancing. While fans of the series may struggle not to drown in their own drool over this massive cast, anyone even marginally less fanatical won't recognise at least half of them. Much of this number is made up by the huge number of clone characters that were nothing more than cheap additions to the digitised versions and while there's obviously been some attempt to differentiate between them, the fact that so many characters look and play alike is still very much in your face. Some of the bigger characters and bosses have been toned down to be made playable too, so where Motaro was once a giant centaur, he's now lost a couple of feet for his bipedal and far less imposing look in Armageddon.

Most stages have some degree of pain built in - bap a guy into this fan and watch him get sucked into the pipes and spat back out into the arena.

One of the strangest choices with this final MK of the generation is to do away with traditional character-specific fatalities and replace them with the universal Kreate-A-Fatality mode. Once the trademark 'Finish Him!' booms forth, you're now able to string together any number of minor punishments into one huge string of hurt. Much of the lure of each new Mortal Kombat title is going through the characters and seeing what gruesome new ways those bloody-minded chaps at Midway have come up with for putting a full stop at the end of a fight, so to do away with this is really pretty brave. The move pays off though, and while there's only so many times you can enjoy Liu Kang setting someone on fire or Reptile getting his snack on with the loser's limp body, this freeform system is arguably one of the strongest points in the game's favour.

If you'd rather try your hand at something other than one-on-one fighting, Midway has laid on a couple of extra modes for you to play for few minutes before realising that they aren't very good. Konquest mode, while far better than its sorry equivalents in the last couple of games, is basically Shaolin Monks Lite with the odd one on one match with a famous face thrown in for good measure. It's not terrible and given that many of the game's secrets can be unlocked here, it's probably worth going through if you intend to play Armageddon for any length of time. Slightly more questionable is Motor Kombat, an ill-conceived yet mildly distracting kart racing effort, which carries over much of the grizzly humour of the main game. It's nowhere near as good as Puzzle Kombat, though and the inclusion of a simplistic kart racer on a game that carries an 18 certificate seems somewhat bizarre but still, Motor Kombat is okay for a few minutes of peace between brutalising characters you don't really care about.

Online modes are always welcome but expect to get pummeled by Americans who wrongly think that Armageddon is the best thing to happen to gaming since Master Chief picked up a second gun.

As an exercise in brutality, Midway's latest struggles to keep up with the likes of God Of War and Dead Rising in terms of sheer nastiness. The comic edge and heritage keep it afloat but that's about it. As a fighting game, though, Mortal Kombat Armageddon is pretty damn poor. Simple dial-a-combos and basic juggles are about as far as depth goes, with the odd super-cheap special move to abuse if you get bored of just pummelling your foe. The old system of each character having three styles to learn has been trimmed to just two this time - a hand-to-hand and weapon style each - to make things more accessible, but commands for most characters follow the same simple patterns anyway, so it's pretty tough to get lost once you find the only couple of combos of any worth and commit them to memory.

New features like the parrying system attempt to claw back some kind of respect from players that have been treated to the delights of Dead Or Alive, Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur but to little avail. The core combat is still as rigid and throwaway as the Mortal Kombat series has ever been and bereft of the kitsch appeal of the earlier games, Armageddon is pretty much as forgettable as brawlers come these days.

5/10

ok...what tha!

not reading the review - as i normally do - and looking at your score makes me think you are wrong.

I thought it was pretty decent for an mk game in the 21st C. The quest game is kinda solid and the arcade mode is cool (the coolest it has been in mk's 3D history!).

Maybe it's the fact that I've only played this for like 3 hours - and I still wanna play more, which lends itself to being something decent. Noh?

Anyways - i shall inspect further (i'll read the review!)

The franchise is making new fans thanks to its quirky design. Remember, though the gameplay is stiff and gore standard in this day and age, the milkers of controversy of the early 1990's at Midway can still churn out playable titles with tons of stuff to unlock plus ridiculous amounts of ketchup to boot.

Are the special move commands still B, F, D, D, D, D, U, U, U, X, Y, B, A, A, B, X, U, U to do a sweep kick or have they finally made it more logical?

And are the fatalities still a Dance Dance Revolution-esque memory test or, again, are they something more intuative?

I always wanted to like Mortal Kombat but I despised the control system.

This is a shame, I had high hopes for this game. Though I do like the latest MK games, nothing will ever top MK3 to me. Classic.

To anyone who read this review

It's bullshit. Don't even listen to it. There's a reason this game got over 80% everywhere else because it actually is a good game. The best 3D Mortal Kombat in fact, with ease.

Too nice. The idea really appealed to me, after all - 64 characters is a lot. But there's so much not said in this review that it's driving me crazy.

It maybe the best 3D MK yet but MK has always lagged behind Soul Cailber, Tekken and Virtua Fighter so the 5/10 might not be wholly unjustified.

Besides, 5/10 isn't a bad score. It just means the game is average.

The 3D Mortals have all been poor and this is getting the scores that DA should have got. This is the best of the bunch but that don't make it a good 3D fighter. The best Mortal was Trilogy. Tons of characters and fast paced team based fighting. Some of my most memorable and enjoyable battles where on Trilogy (N64 version for the loading, or lack of) and this is from a SNK/Street Fighter nerd.

The last 3D MK game was dire, and yet had quite positive reviews in most places, so I'm prepared to trust EG that this one is also crap, regardless of what other reviewers might have to say.

No mention of created characters? How does the game play online? The review itself deserves a 5/10.

Sort-of agree with the review, but the guy clearly isn't that interested in the MK back-story and its characters (which is a shame, as MK probably has a more interesting universe than the ones we see in the "I can't get laid so I look at virtual tits" Dead or Alive series).

Actually mentioning Dead or Alive as a 'good' example of a fighting game is a big flaw with the review too. I think many of us have seen how flawed the series is. At least Soul Calibur and Virtual Fighter are fair game though.

Personally I reckon Armageddon is more of a 6 or 7 out of 10, simply because it still offers something enjoyable and worth playing at the end of the day. However, it's only by the skin of its teeth that it manages to avoid being average.

I think the whole Kreate-A-Fatlity system is damn lazy, as Midway obviously couldn't be arsed to design a killer move for each of the characters. I think it's about time Midway focused on fewer fighters, so that they to balance and re-work the combat altogether. What Armageddon offers has some depth, but it really is a mish-mash of dial-combos, air combat, blocks and parry moves. A more fluid form of gameplay would be more beneficial for any future MK.

Another thing that is pretty poor are the endings for each of the characters. I mean, how long would it take to draw some nice pictures and add some voice-over (e.g. Deadly Alliance/Deception)? You have no incentive at all to complete the Arcade mode other than to gain some currency... it's a shame.
I personally would have ditched the sh*tty Mario Kart rip-off game, and instead focused the development time on CGI endings. Actually watching the introduction movie to Armageddon makes you cry all the more when you see Midway haven't bothered at all with character endings at all.

Basically: Midway, it's time to get real and re-invent Mortal Kombat like Capcom have for Resident Evil.

I suggest everyone gets mk deception, pretty much the same game but only £3 second hand on amazon.

At least that one still has signature fatalities.

Eee lad, I remember when low rez pixilleted violence were contraversial. I helped a mate who was a reporter do a Ban This Sick Filth Now article on MK 1 for the local rag - sneaking into Codonas in Aberdeen, trying to sneak a photo of me playing a Scorpion fatality whilst looking suitably ready to go out and harpoon small children. Got thrown out by the bouncers when he went to the manager for a quote :D.

I'm not too sure about this game. It throws lots of modes at you, but doesn't change the gameplay. Got Deadly Alliance, Deception and Shaolin Monks, Deception is the best, yet Shaolin Monks feels quite flat compared to previous MK games but Deadly Alliance really changed MK into what it is today. I'm going to wait untill Armageddon is cheaper.

I picked this up for a party last weekend and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a bit of guilty pleasure though, I know there are way better fighting games out there, but the 'kitsch appeal' of MK just does it for me. My fellow kombatants and I had a blast making ridiculously over-muscled facsimiles of ourselves and then kicking the crap out of each other.

This is definitely one of those games where you have to play it with friends. It's also much easier to learn the most other fighters, so even a novice can have fun after a few rounds, unlike Virtua Fighter, where newbies will get completely destroyed and rapidly become bored.
