Tron Evolution Reader Review
Go on admit it, a closet geek that loves the origional Tron movie by Disney! But in social circles it must never be mentioned!
After reading through the retrospective on Tron 2.0 and installing it again (what an awesome game). Playing Tron Evolution though I can safely say that I've seen it all before.
So, what we have here is a mish mash of other (better) games. Its not that Tron Evolution is bad, its just not that great iin all honesty, but there are better titles out there that offer a whole lot more for you money.
Take the free running from Assassins Creed & Mirrors Edge, add a dash of the upgrades from Deus Ex then add some of the combat from PoP, then stick it all into the Tron universe and put it on the shelves for mugs like me to buy. Thats what we have here, a third person free running platform game that is virtually (no pun intended) on the rails. Head through a corridor into a larger open room where you will be attacked by a few waves of infection, kill them off then move on to the next area to do the same again. Possibly add a bit of variety by chucking in a few grapple points to frustrate you even further. Or add a new enemy type but dont give you a decent means to kill it till after you have managed to take a few out the long way round.
Combat in this title is a stinker, the closest thing you have to locking on is the block you can do with the disc. However if you move around while holding block you are very limited to what you can actually do. So you have to run around trying to take things out with discs flying about coming in from all angles. There are no guns in this one, just the disc. So you start just mashing buttons and jumping about hoping that you get the upper hand before the next wave. Top this off with the fact that the game takes the first enemy you see and locks it on as your target. Problem here comes in the form of the 2 other characters onscreen getting closer by the second and the game doesnt have the knowledge to let go of the initial lock. AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrggghhhhhhh, frustrating.
One of the major problems with the combat is the camera, I guess a retarded blind elephant with 5 minutes of basic programming has actually done this. Its the only real explanation thinking about it. See, while you are holding block the camera safely sits behind you. Trouble is as soon as you start moving and jumping about the camera does the equivalent of an epileptic fit. At times you wont see your character onscreen its jumping about that much or it will place it behind some of the scenery, go figure. This doesnt just happen during combat though, oh no! The programmers want you bald from tearing your hair out. Start a free run up a wall to get to a platform behind you, sounds like an easy enough backflip in the style of Prince of Persia. Not a chance, lets flip the camera round to where you dont want it and kill you instantly from a long drop.
I can just see it now, team behind this pile of steaming turd pissing themselves laughing as you fall yet again and scream at your PC. Some sort of sadistic pleasure methinks.
Graphically it does look nice and it sounds ok, however it is Tron so it all looks the same anyways. This is where something is missing, yeah, got it in one. GAMEPLAY
Another problem I have encountered here is at times it is running smooth as silk on my system. Then in the next second, usually when you are trying to do one of the wall runs or backflips it will start stuttering and guess what. It bloody kills you again.
The only remote bit of fun as such is the brief light cycle bits, even these are frustrating though, very much trial and error (same as the other bits mentioned actually). Get up some speed, explosion, dont notice it and fall of the road. Go back to the checkpoint and remember where it was so it doesnt happen again......rinse & repeat.
So, if you are fond of your hair and want to keep those hard earned readies, keep away from this. Grab AC Brotherhood or revisit Deus Ex & PoP.
This is literally a case of Tron fans will buy anything. Wait for the movie but avoid this game like the plague. You will feel better for it.
