Donkey Kong Country Returns Reader Review
Wind the clock back to 1994 & imagine yourself in a hotel waiting to see some new donkey kong game on the SNES, could it really be as good as everyone is saying? Videos are shown, jaws drop...is this really the SNES? There's a competition, the best monkey impression gets a free console & game....the room is filled with people doing the most crazy monkey impressions "must get donkey kong now is the mantra" it's like an audition for planet of the apes gone awry.
Fast forward to 2010, can the all new donkey kong for wii stir up as much mania as the original? You betcha! Bananas, it's all about the bananas! Some pesky critters have made off with all your stash & have turned the jungle upside down, hypnotizing all your jungle friends against you so get them bananas back!
This is 2D platform action at it's best with gorgeous visuals & tight controls. All the classic donkey kong stuff is here, exploding barrels, runaway mine's with pixel perfect jumps, giant octopuss! Your mate diddy kong is back to help you along the way by giving you an extra boost to your monkey jump which helps in tricky situations. Ok, this game ain't easy, the difficulty starts off for beginners but really ramps up after the third world is reached & it will have you throwing your remote around the room, there's also an auto play feature which kicks in if you're really getting stuck & features a silverback donkey kong that shows you how it's done, it's a nice feature but I felt I was cheating when I used it.
There's 8 worlds in all to explore but there's loads of replayability in here due to all the unlockable stuff that's crammed in..."KONG"letters & jigsaw pieces litter every stage, banana coins which are used as currency in crankys shop allow you to buy keys for secret levels & buy extra lives plus parrot advice (he sqwauks by secrets) All things you'll never get on your first run through the game.
I loved playing this game as it harks back to the golden age of the SNES when it ruled the roost with sega's megadrive & the xbox was just a glint in the milkmans eye. So if you want to take a trip down memory lane to see how proper games were made but with superbly updated graphics & sound check out donkey kong country returns....
