Dark Sector Reader Review
Back in 2004, Digital Extremes promised us "an action-horror game the likes of which you have never seen before" then eventually the inevitable happened and the game that was meant to be the next beacon of shining light in the gaming world went the way of most games nowadays and was delayed, and now, four fucking years later we finally have it, the game we have been waiting for...Gears of W...no wait, I mean Dark Sector!
The game's main character is a man named Hayden Tenno (voiced by Michael Rosenbaum of Smallville), a morally ambivalent clean-up man employed by the CIA, now I'll admit folks, that last sentence about Hayden was taken directly from Wikipedia because you'll be damned if you can gather THAT much information from the game itself! You start off infiltrating a dark and brooding enemy base with nothing but your trusty pistol and an accuracy for headshots that borders on the obscene! You quickly discover that the main enemy leader here (known as Mezner) is trying to ship out some sort of biological weapon for use in some evil world domination plot, fair enough, the game is pretty black and white so far (as well as the standard coffee filter brown and gun-metal grey that designers seem obsessed with nowadays!
You walk around the base for a bit, planting C4 explosives as you go until you meet Mezner and his armoured Guyver...erm...I mean bodyguard...yeah, bodyguard! You subsequently get stabbed, and therefore infected, by this Mr Evil Guyver and thatís when things become a bit more interesting...You now have the ability to summon a three bladed Death Frisbee know as the Glaive (which if memory serves me is a medieval pole-arm but Meh I guess we are just looking the other way with that one...) You work your way through the various levels killing millions (and I mean fucking millions) of people by mercilessly hacking bits of them off with your death-frisbee, the enemies range from your normal squishy human meat sacks and less squishy demon meat sacks and even your super hard battle humans whom are invincible and carry a small anti personal chain-gun (apart from the three flashing lights on their head/back that scream (hit here numb-nuts!) you eventually find Mr Evil Guyver and Mezner and exact your revenge (donít worry that wont ruin the story for you, not that thereís much of one anyway)
Now itís very easy to be critical of this game, mainly because it's almost an exact clone of Gears of War (even down to the sprinting and vaulting over low objects) except rather than being armed with a chainsaw on a gun, you have three kitchen knives on a dinner plate!
If this game had come out a few years ago then it would have been heralded as the "action-horror game the likes of which you have never seen before" but in this case, there are so many games trying to be like the big hitters (for example, Gears of War) and frankly, once you gain the ability to become invisible during a fight, yes INVISIBLE, the enemies become less of a threat and more of a mild annoyance, granted, Iíll admit I didnít play the game on Brutal Difficulty as I only rented it, and I only rented it for the Achievements, I'll admit that too! (Self Confessed Achievement Whore that I am) but thatís the kind of game it is, it's a recently released game and I found NOBODY on multiplayer (not even achievement booster whores and their everywhere!)
From Digital Extremes however I did expect this game to be something more than a gory game of Run-Down Warehouse Frisbee Championship! Considering they co-developed the Unreal Saga (with the help of Epic, which may go to explaining the Gears of War similarities)
Iíd like to say its an enjoyable game but if youíve played Gears of War then you've already played Dark Sector but with better dialog and more action, itís storyline goes the way of Devil May Cry 2 with the "we donít want to explain it, just accept it and keep playing" method of storytelling, where your character has as much depth as a dry paddling pool thatís just been spat in by a toddler, we are presented with several back story characters (none of which are really explained and we are expected to know them already) and frankly, two missions after receiving Aftertouch (the ability to control your Death Frisbee during flight) I completely forgot I even had a gun and I never once spent any money on purchasing any others!
Donít expect to be on the edge of your seat with this one folks.
Oh, and just as a side not, if I may quote Wikipedia again..."Hayden Tenno suffers from a real-life disease called congenital analgia that does not allow him to feel pain."Can I just ask anybody else who has played this game, where the fuck was that ever, EVER mentioned ANYWHERE in the game?! Anybody? at all?...no? didn't think so.
