Return to Ultima Online for free

EA celebrates 10th anniversary.

EA has celebrated a decade of Ultima Online by inviting back those of you who have subscribed to the game at some point in the past.

You will be treated to nearly two full weeks of free gaming (ending 9th October), where you can enjoy the recent graphical overhaul of Kingdom Reborn.

EA will also give you a fancy Wand of Fireworks to mess up the sky with, as well as 10 Dcor Tokens to, er, hang on a cow or throw at a rabbit or something.

The rest of the celebratory period will give you a chance to complete the full Virtue Armour set, get your hands on commemorative pieces like an Ankh Necklace and Map of Britannia, or swish around historical weapons owned by notable figures in the Ultima Online history. Other fun and valuable gifts will make the list at a later date.

Ultima Online launched back in 1997, and was one of the first titles to popularise the massively-multiplayer online role-playing genre. Most recently the Kingdom Reborn overhaul added a modern feel to the classic title, which still had enough charm in the tank to impress us.

Head over to the official website to download the client and rejoin the world, and see for yourself what has made Ultima Online last such a long time.

Don't pretend like you're not excited about this.

    I'm not excited about this.

If they'd made it free for everyone, that would have been exciting...maybe...

Remember folks, Richard Garriot doesn't like games stagnating so if you have any respect for the bloke, you know he wouldn't want you playing a game that's been around largely unchanged for ten years.

Still the best game I ever played. I lost years of my life, and I still remember the night two weeks after the housing collapse refresh bug was fixed.

36 hours straight gaming and adrenaline, plus we managed to place a tower.

    Oh yeah.

.::: Played this again last month and it made me realise how the genre has streamlined itself over the years.

The masochistic sequence you have to follow to deliver a quest-item alone should be enough to turn any WoW-player mad within mere seconds. Sorry, it hasn't aged that well I'm afraid...

A recent graphic overall!? Surely you mean an overhaul?

A strange typo, unless you're now dictating these news articles to a scribe :p

It's definitely a graphical overall - something to throw on in the winter months to keep the cold at bay, and it has a nice arty pattern to impress friends with.

Wait, hold on. Overall's are things you put on while painting. I know all this. Completely clued up this afternoon.

36 hours straight gaming and adrenaline, plus we managed to place a tower.

Chinese gamers have died doing that.

    Sorry.

Ah yes, I remember it well. I was there on launch day, fishing, hitting target dummies, getting 1-shot PK'd from off-screen. Good times. One month was all I could take.

    Must... resist...
