Resistance: Retribution Review

PSP Review by Dan Whitehead

13 March, 2009

Page 1 of 2. Page 2 ->

The PSP is in a curious situation. Perhaps a victim of its own multi-functional design, the handheld has clocked up impressive sales in the face of daunting competition from the DS, yet in 2008 it seemed like the games were drying up. "Make more games!" said Sony to its third-party developers, before sheepishly muttering, "Oh, and maybe we should do the same."

Not that there haven't been games, and games based on popular PlayStation properties. This time last year, for example, there was God of War: Chains of Olympus, which made Kristan go all 8/10. Resistance is the next big franchise to get the shrinky-dink treatment and, once again, the result manages to sweeten the compromises of the port with satisfying action and impressive production values.

Set after the first game, and therefore presumably running alongside the events of its PS3 big brother Resistance 2, Retribution's story follows disgraced British squaddie James Grayson as he gets dropped into a new theatre of war in mainland Europe. Having been forced to kill his own brother in one of the Chimera conversion centres, Grayson went AWOL and began waging his own war against the baddies, free from interference from the military brass. Finally captured and sentenced to death, he's offered a last-minute reprieve if he agrees to help The Maquis, a French resistance group, repel the invaders.

It's a convoluted back-story, and one that unfortunately skips past what sounds like the most exciting part - Grayson's rogue one-man crusade - in favour of objective-led missions handed down by bossy-boots military men. The narrative isn't helped by some awkward dialogue, delivered in a variety of distracting British accents. Grayson himself is a surly and fairly unpleasant man to follow around, and sounds a lot like Ray Winstone by way of a racist minicab driver.

The small screen thankfully hasn't meant scaling down the series' larger foes.

None of this really matters once you're shooting at stuff, however, and the game wisely gets to the shooty bits once the obligatory story cut-scenes have done their thing. The game has switched from first-person to third-person, but since Sony Bend studio has spent the past decade making the daft-but-awesome Syphon Filter series, including two solid PSP versions, it's a wise choice.

Bend (named after its Oregon base - also home to the world's first pregnant man, fact fans!) has proven experience in squeezing the most from the PSP hardware and it pays off in spades here. Retribution looks great, with the sort of attention to detail and solid 3D environments that are often fudged for handheld audiences. Control, another area where ambitious PSP games suffer, is also handled with thought and care. The left stick moves Grayson, the face buttons control your aim. Right shoulder button shoots, and left activates whatever secondary fire your current weapon has.

The d-pad is called upon to flesh out these basics, with right cycling through your arsenal and left reloading. Targeting is automatic, using a broad rectangular reticule. You lock on to any enemies inside this area, meaning that the gameplay can retain the fast run-and-gun feel of the PS3 series without tripping over the limits of the PSP controls. It can feel a little frustrating at first, having this crucial element of shooter control taken away from you, but for those who like to do things manually, tapping up on the d-pad puts you into a slower but more accurate zoomed-in viewpoint or, when wielding the Fareye sniper rifle, the scope view.

Plus - one of them is missing. The one you aim with.

Oh nice!
I've got a bunch of stuff in my play pile for the PSP at the moment. The only proper action type game I've got on it is the Warriors though, so I'm not sure how I'd get on with a shooter.

It's worth pointing out that the game interacts with Resistance 2 via USB connection to unlock Infected mode, which gives Grayson recharging health and other perks.

@WangFu - Yeah both Syphon Filter games worked surprisingly well on the machine, brought the series back into favour and proof this style of game can be done on PSP.

Still I think third person is generally ill suited to the PSP. MGS Portable Ops being case in point smacks of feature creep, feeling duty bound to fit the new Subsistance camera onto the machine, but hampered by poor controls and level design compared to the top down titles in the series.

Personally while I liked the Syphon Filter titles (give em a try, demo for the sequel is up on PSN as well) much being down to the skill of how it was implemented by Bent - single analogue third person action titles is kinda fighting against the form and ideally should be avoided at all costs by Sony and third parties when planning new PSP titles, certainly for games that need quick reflex decisions in the hands of the gamer. Anyways have yet to try the demo of this, shall download and check it out.

Clearly people do not remember the joy of Fur Fighters for the dreamcast

A perfectly good game where you aim or moved with the d-pad, I think that FPS or third person action can work on the PSP, Daxter did. Sadly I have no interest in resistance so I not really a buyer.

"but it does a better job of matching the online modes of "proper" consoles better than most rivals in its genre"

one better too many. ;)

Good review though, thanks! The demo really didn't feel like it did the game enough justice, and that seems to be right from this review.

This looks pretty decent and I like Resistance 2, but I don't have a PSP.

Keenly waiting for a PS3 Syphon Filter though, if they can make it as slick as Dark Mirror.

@Triggerhappytel As tempting as it is to write this with a nod and a wink, I felt first Uncharted turned out to be a kind of Syphon Filter title at times, not as tight or with as many equipment choices mind but Uncharted 2 looks has gone all out cover system third person shooter. Would be an ideal game engine to use for any PS3 version, even if the budget and production values needed to take a hit the tech and code basics must be all there so yeah I agree with you.

I have this and in my opinion it's actually better than the PS3 game. Both the story and the action play a hell of a lot better. No idea why they didn't do something like this on the PS3 instead of the mediocre FPS we ended up with.

Just out of interest, I popped over to Play.com where this is going for £17.99 for the Collectors Edition. So bit of a bargain there.

IIRC the Retribution demo required 5.02 which also made me upgrade from 5.0-m33 something to 5.02 OME, you'll find it no problem. I guess the full game might require the same version. If not, there was a "version faker" app somewhere?

Cheers dude, I'll look into that OME, now all I need to do is remember how to dump a UMD! It's been so long since I bought a PSP game....no seriously, I can't remember!

EDIT: Actually thinking of it Mrs bad09 picked up TR: Anniversary last week so I can "brush up" on the dumps with that.

I'm playing it for few hours, and I can say that it's fantastic!!! When I finished the demo I was really disappointed, i didn't find anything interestig in it except nice graphics. The game is definitly something whole different, best shooter on PSP, and probably one of the best 2009 PSP games.
Also, controls are very good, and I didn't miss second thumb.
All in all, i was amazingly surprised with the game after playing the demo, 8/10.
