Resistance goes global tomorrow

With new maps to buy too.

Global servers for Resistance: Fall of Man will go online tomorrow evening, bringing European, American and Japanese players together for the first time.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe explained this morning that Resistance servers will be down between 2am and 6pm BST tomorrow while they are updated.

Also debuting tomorrow are two new maps, which will be sold as "Map Pack 1", both through the PS3 Store and in-game, for GBP 2.99.

The maps are Westmorland (a snowy sniper's paradise, by the sound of it) and Camborn. Click the words to be whisked off to a screenshot for each.

They join a range of new features introduced since the game launched in the US last November and here on 23rd March.

You can read more about what's happened to Resistance since launch, along with our reviews, on the Resistance: Fall of Man PS3 gamepage.

    No cathedral? Darn... :)
  • agparrot #3 5 years ago

Cool, now can I see if that lad I saw on xleague TV matches up against the Americans? He looked pretty good on the show...

Gregory someone-orother, but he clearly outclassed the competition by some margin, and the commentators were speculating about whether he would size up against our friends over the pond... think Ellie Gibson was commentating, that day, but might just be horribly confused as I only seem to watch it in the wee hours.

About bloody time... Resistance is a blast online so looking forward to the new maps :)
  • Yaster #5 5 years ago

This should be great but I'm also looking forward to finding out what other extras the main patch will bring, eg being able to change game types after opening public rooms

Didnt realise that you werent playing people from around the globe before. I just dont pay enough attention.

I really like the multiplayer in Resistance but I dont know i play it enough to buy the pack.

  • jonsaan #7 5 years ago

Oh joy, now the Americans can ruin it for us.

And before you start...some of my best friends are American...

i really need a PS3 now, loaned one for a while to complete this and motorstorm and back then we didnt have network play so i decided to wait 6 months or so to see some new interesting stuff.

Super StarDust HD and Resistance seems like a great bet for my 2 new games with the console :)

Damn. The reason I was thinking of getting a PS3 has gone.

    American children ruin Xbox live.

Can you not supply an option "filter by region"? That would make everybody happy.

Are they seriously taking 16 hours of down-time to sort this out?

Resistance is one of the few games I've actually played more than once online, it's accesible, dumb but lots of fun, but then I'm not a huge fan of them to be honest and rarely play 360 games online for that reason. With that in mind, I'd definitely pay £3 for these maps as I know I'd actually play them. Shame there's only two maps but I guess that's reflected in the price as a typical Xbox 360 map pack usually costs around £7 but has more content.
  • Moogrose #12 5 years ago

is it 3 pounds per map though?
  • muftak #13 5 years ago

    no 2.99 for 2 maps

Why on earth would you want to play with people in the Us and Japan? The latency will make the whole exercise pointless?

    /walks off baffled

As far as I know, we will still have the option to play on the european servers ;)

    American children ruin Xbox live.

Indeed. However, I would recommend that you try SR. No Americans hence a rather pleasant experience for once.
  • captainrentboy #18 5 years ago

Is this the same with all PS3 online games then? Is Resistance the only one (from tomorrow) that'll allow Europeans play against Americans/Japanese etc?
Strange, but I think I'd probably prefer that actually, as 9 times out of 10 it is an American that ruins my experience on Xbox live.
Which is why it has been a joy to play Flatout online over the last few days, they're all such a friendly bunch on there.

Considering so few people playing Resistance have Headsdets, other than Hardcore players, or those convinced by friends (like the EG lot),I don't think the XBL scenario applies.
  • SeesThroughAll #20 5 years ago

Not to mention there are much less children who own a PS3. Most people who own one have a good enough job to afford one! ;) :p
  • SBfistfun #21 5 years ago

Yeah, good news for you, but I doubt they are doing this to help out people with imported machines!
  • mysteryfaceuk #22 5 years ago

I'm pleased to see no Xbox fanboys have ruined this discussion yet by saying something like Resistance is the only good game on the PS3.

Anyway, this update seems like good value and good fun to me. Looking forward to it.
  • captainrentboy #23 5 years ago

..... Why would they say that? There's Motorstorm too :)
  • Pedrolot #24 5 years ago

about time i got to kick american ass...
  • mysteryfaceuk #25 5 years ago

    @captainrentboy

I know but us PS3 owners often have to put up with that.

Resistance is a fantastic game though. I've been playing it today and it's just so much fun on multiplayer. I used to play games like Quake and Unreal Tournament online on my PC but they were never as much fun as this. I think it's because it's set in the UK. Battling around Manchester or a bus depot makes all the difference.

I've been playing R:FoM online on a regular basis since release in march - it's very enjoyable online!

In fact I like it a lot more than I ever liked Halo 2 online ;)

I lpok forward to kicking some Americcan ass, but dread being slaughtered by some Japanese super gamer
  • Hughes. #31 5 years ago

I haven't even learned the existing maps properly yet, so I'll hold off for now and save my money for Super Stardust HD and (hopefully) Syphon Filter and Medievil.
  • Steroyd #32 5 years ago

The Japanese don't play FPS's, although Tekken DR is another story. :o
  • G-Money #33 5 years ago

Can anyone explain why no one is using headsets on RFOM?,,...

I don't consider myself a 'hardcore' gamer. Pairing my old Nokia BluTooth was childs play and has made the experience far more 3 dimensional. Can't imagine playing without the ability to whisper "unlucky" as I Stealth Kill a sneeky sniper...

Am I missing something or is Sony doing a poor job of promoting this aspect of PS3 gameplay?
  • zuljin #34 5 years ago

    @G-Money
Unlike Xbox Live, in game chat is not a standard thing, but rather left to developers to implement. Meaning some do, some don't. Also, since headsets don't come as standard with the console, not everyone has one either. I only really ever use mine in games with friends though.

Personally I borrow mine from work :)
  • Hughes. #35 5 years ago

I have my headset on when I'm playing, it never occurs to me to say anything though. I tend to play mainly free for alls though, so it's not like i need to share team tactics. I just be saying "Shit, I'm dead again."
  • Beano #36 5 years ago

I always use headset for voice chat when playing with friends and in my clan. But when playing alone with/against strangers (usually team deathmatch) I never use headset.
  • captainrentboy #37 5 years ago

I'm not the biggest chatter usually on Live, but on the Halo Beta I couldn't stop yacking, I found a chatty team a lot better than a silent one, chattier teams worked together a lot better, and in most instances were the ones who won the match, due to the throwing about of various tactics and what not.
Strange how it's not really that big of a deal on the PSN :/
  • Scimarad #38 5 years ago

At last! will be grabbing this straight away...

From the FAQ on MyResistance.net :

"The “Worldwide Play” option is a new option on the “Multiplayer Options” screen. Setting this to “Worldwide” will allow you to play games against other players all over the world. Setting it to your local region (North America, Europe, etc) will restrict your games to only allow other players from your region to join, and will guarantee that any players you are matched against when playing ranked games are from the same region as you."

    Nice :)
