• rhinoxious #6 4 years ago

Wow they added a second colour to the brown of the first game, and it's grey!

Two colours in one game - impressive stuff.
• JediMasterMalik #7 4 years ago

I didn't know EG were allowed to use magazine scans.
• mikew1985 #8 4 years ago

wow! dark grey. in a shooter. wow!
• TitusCrow #9 4 years ago

These are scans. Poor ones at that. Isn't that a little naughty EG?

"BETTER THAN HALO 3!"

Yeah because the first Resistance got a 6/10.

ResistanceLOL.

Am I imaging it, or do the aliens (Chimera?) all have their mouths open in every shot?

Maybe this is why they're so angry, lockjaw from rusty alien-making implants. I hope one of the new weapons is a tetanus booster.
• chudders #13 4 years ago

I can see the brush marks.
• Darren #14 4 years ago

Looking very good. At least Insomniac know how to make native 720p games and add anti-aliasing, mentioning no names...*cough*Bungie/Halo 3*cough* ;)

Sorry! LOL

Apparently not, farticus, you fanboy stallion :)

Resistance will be the one of the first games I pick up whenever the Lord kindly allots me time/money to buy a PS3.
• TipTop #16 4 years ago

I was rather hoping for a shoot out in the Vatican given the 'sensitivities' last time.
• Yaz #17 4 years ago

Hmmm, although I haven't played Resistance myself, from all accounts it was a solid FPS for the PS3. Certainly enough to provide a good foundation for a potentially excellent sequel.

As for being better than Halo 3, I'm assuming you're just being deliberately provocative HB. ;)
• mikew1985 #18 4 years ago

Looks quite impressive even if the style isn't something I personally love I have to say the visuals are mightily impressive.
I think this year maybe the year I complete my console collection and finally nab a PS3 assuming some of the promising exclusives deliver.
• dirigiblebill #19 4 years ago

@Egster

You, sir, have obviously yet to patronise any of the recent Sony sales figures threads, which make this one look like More's Utopia.

The first one had a good engine and was a great run'n'gun online multiplayer title. The single player lacked a lot in terms of gameplay certainly in the earlier levels. Apparently better toward the end but I didn't stick it out that long to be honest.

I'm interested, but will wait and see. My reflexes in my old age are not quite up to run'n'gun these days so prefer an online shooter where I can attempt to outwit my opponents.

Latest shots are 1080p and shall we say a little suspiciously anti-aliased. I think we may have been at home to a little post processing.
• Lim-Dul #21 4 years ago

That's a matter of opinion drumbaby, and I believe it's far too early to arrive at such conclusions.

Besides, I prefer to take carefully staged and often post-processed screenshots for games of ALL formats with a pitch of salt. :)

• jiggles100 #27 4 years ago

I hope Resistance 2 is better than the first effort. It was too short, too easy and the graphics weren't as next-gen as I'd hoped.

Perhaps since the recent revelation that RFOM used a mere 10% of Cell's power, it's not unrealistic to expect a huge leap graphically. Maybe we'll see some decent AA implemented in the remaining 90% (fingers crossed).

I agree with the others - EG should be sourcing real screenshots not scans. Note to editor: Do it again and we'll pwn you!

To Halo3 fans: Get some perspective, a PS3 and a copy of Warhawk.

• Darren #28 4 years ago

@jiggles100 - Resistance might not have been graphically astounding but it looked decent and ran with a slick, smooth framerate at 1280x720p which is more important. Insomniac made the best game they could in the time they had but the wonderful Ratchet & Clank ToD showed how much they've learnt since and these Resistance 2 screenshots suggest yet another improvement. Insomniac = Great Developer IMO.

I don't understand this. Are you suggesting Resistance didn't use any AA because it looks like it does on my setup... in fact, I'd say it and Ratchet & Clank ToD are two of the least jaggy looking games I've seen on the PS3 or even in this generation, period.

Words cannot express how excited I am after seeing these screens.
• Muddtallica #30 4 years ago

Wait, are these shots from the sequel? This just looks an awful lot like the first one to me...not that I'd really be able to tell. Resistance was fun-ish, I guess, but suffered heavily from being the most run-of-the-mill game in the world, in terms of gameplay and style. I don't mind admitting that the aspect I enjoyed most about it was the fact that playing co-op doesn't alter the cutscenes or storyline at all, so it just looks like everyone is intentionally ignoring Player 2, who's a black guy. :D Hollywood racism FTW!
• Bertie Verified Senior Staff Writer, Eurogamer.net #31 4 years ago

Why do aliens have to look mean? Multiple eyes and protruding fangs don't bode well for an intelligent life form. Spiders are pretty thick. Not that I've talked to one.

• jiggles100 #33 4 years ago

@Darren

Keep your panties on, I wasn't dissing their efforts, they did well for a first attempt on PS3. The lessons learned on R'n'C will indeed give them a great advantage on this sequel, and I look forward to playing R2

You overlooked the first 2 point I made which stated that the game lacked in other ways that weren't related to graphics.

1) The storyline was weak, due in part to the fact that we already new what it was about months before it was released. The only thing that separates these shooters is the background storyline. I didn't feel entertained by RFOM. There was too little holding it together. A voice over and a couple of stills doesn't cut it nowadays. There has to be drama. This was missing in the first RFOM

2) It was too easy. This is self explanatory - if I spend that much money on a game I don't want to finish it in one night!

Insomniac = Person who can't sleep, something easily resolved by playing RFOM for 30 mins. Warhawk FTW

update: Depends on your TV. My LG has a blur thingy that you can tweak to make things look AA'd. By default this is off but I can set it up for anything from raw and jaggy to smooth as a ice-cream. Maybe I have to buy a Sony Bravia to see how it is supposed to look according to Sony.

60 player online and 8 player coop online, nothing to sneeze at! Yay for dedicated servers. ;) Though Warhawk's implementation is probably even better, being able to run all variants - dedicated 32 player, but also dedicate your own PS3, play on your own PS3 while hosting, and even share 4 players split-screen and still host or join a match. Crazy and awesome.

Look forward to this, should be fun also taking place in sixties USA. I think I'll like the coop missions too, but I"ll certainly also just get it for the single player as the first is one of the first FPSs in ages that I bothered to play through to the end. :)

It looks okay but I just find it hard to be excited about another generic scifi shooter. I know its sort of a generic ww2 shooter as well but how about some originality? Its like they sat down and said "generic scifi shooters are popular now, we'll do one of those" and someone else said "But generic ww2 shooters are popular too" and then a lightbulb went off in their heads and resistance was born. I played the first one, actually enjoyed it but if videogames are actually going to grow as an art form it needs to be doing a whole lot better than this.
• WangFu #39 4 years ago

I never played the original, but I take it that the 'Men' never fell then.
• jiggles100 #40 4 years ago

@Arwin ... Thanks for these ... very impressive. Is there any mention of vehicles? Got to have some wheels!
• Les #41 4 years ago

"It looks okay but I just find it hard to be excited about another generic scifi shooter."

Only started playing Resistance last week and must say I really like it. Hadn't played single player FPSs since the first couple of boring levels of Unreal and Quake 2 never did impress me much. Last year I got Killzone on the cheap. Was curious to see what all the hype was about. It was a great game, even though it had plenty of technical shortcomings. But the art direction was amazing. Best I've seen in any game so far.

So with little play time of the recent FPSs, Resistance doesn't come across as jaded to me But if you've played nothing but shooters the last couple of years, it might very well be. Art direction is great though not at the same level of Killzone (the PS2 version). Gameplay is varied, with dark corridor sections and larger, open battle fields. Weapons are great fun, the story is engaging because of the close ties to the 'real' world and the audio is excellent (not as amazing as the audio of Uncharted (best audio ever in a game) but still very good). All in all a game I thoroughly enjoy so far.

And there not much left besides Nazis, terrorists and aliens that you can shoot without outcries of those nasty politicians... ;)

Looks quite a bit better than the first to me, regardless I'm looking forward to it. The first had a good story and a great setting, the weapons were equally fun, and very original. Vehicles are confirmed for MP I think.
• DrDamn #43 4 years ago

@Arwin - errr, aren't those just the same shots as EG has? You want to click on View Original you do :)

At 1080p they still look too super smooth to me. Giving me the impression these shots are designed for print and have been more than a little doctored.

"Errr.. resistance was utter cack.. why bother with a sequel?"

I dunno, I enjoyed the single player of Resistance much more than Halo 3's campaign. But I was horribly disappointed with Halo 3, especially after the "OMG 10/10" EG review.
• mkreku #51 4 years ago

Those can't possibly be in-game shots.
• kangarootoo #52 4 years ago

Jesus, why can't any thread on here stay free of playground banter for more than 1 hour.

My thoughts.

1. Screens look nice. I think they are composites, but the content all looks like in-game assets.

2. I really liked Resistance. I know not everyone did, but I'm not everyone. Anyone who didn't like Resistance should probably buy something else. Anyone who did should keep an eye on this sequel. Seems obvious, but you wouldn't know it by looking at this thread.

3. Different engines do different things well and not so well.

Gears of War had higher detail levels in tight environments. This is fact, the Resistance devs have said so themselves (Unreal engine could stream textures, Resistance engine could not).

Resistance was clearly better able to render huge areas, which allowed for vistas and battlefields that Gears could not achieve. This is also fact. Its not an insult to anyone, its just the truth.

4. A good game is a good game. Doesn't matter whether this is better or worse than Halo or COD4. Unless you only play 2 games a year, there is space for all of them. If you only own a 360 and prefer Halo, well thats a happy coincidence. If you only own a PS3 and love Resistance, well then that also is a good situation. Why are people unhappy about things that, by their OWN admittance, make no difference to them? WHY?

That is all. Grow up whining children (you know who you are).
• JonFE #53 4 years ago

kangarootoo, how dare you raise a voice of reason in this "debate"???
• Kittinger #54 4 years ago

This looks promising - Resistance 2 has just moved onto my list of "wanted" games.
• Moz #55 4 years ago

At first i thought the shots looked a little jaggy then I realised that Firefox had scrunk then to fit the screen. Once I had then in native view i was very impressed, and bar maybe a little anti-aliasing these are in game shots you just have to look at Ratchet and Clank: ToD to know that insomniacs graphics engine is capable of this.

So now really looking farward to this.

On an aside: on paper at least the PS3 can not supass the 360 graphically the RSX just can't compete with xenos but it can get close enough.
• Gaol #56 4 years ago

Loved the first one, but am probably a bit biased. It arrived seal wrapped from the US before my PS3 followed a week later. That cover was the most heavily scrutinized box ever and the initial experience was heavily influenced by enjoying PS3 for the first time.

Any, sequel is /instabuy.
• monty2k #57 4 years ago

I thoroughly enjoyed the original and even though it was a bit generic it still had a great solid "feel" to it, the weapons were fun and the online multiplayer is still pretty good and popular. My main gripe though was the atrocious NPC voice acting - everyone either had awful kate nash mockney accents, there was one sniper with something resembling an Irish accent and the end reactor fight had a bizarre Geordie/Welsh narrator. Would it have hurt them to hire British voice actors?

Also since this sequel is set in 1960s America will it feature hippies, flower power and recreational drug use?

I'd like a demo. The opening York section of RFOM was dire so would be nice to know if the game really launches into it this time, rather than ambles. Good gameplay mechanic though, played really well although I hope the levels are long and seamless as opposed to the chapters of the original.

I actually didn't like the multiplayer on the first, they really need to sort the weapons out for that. What were great for the 1p mode were cruddy for the multiplayer. Nothing that tempted me away from Warhawk for online japes.
• Darren #63 4 years ago

If anyone can make decent use of the PS3's hardware then it's Insomniac so I'm hopeful that Resistance 2 will be even better than the first game which I confess I actually really enjoyed. I suppose part of it was the surprise and awe of playing a slick FPS that wasn't TimeSplitters on a PS console but even so I thought it was a good first effort plus it had split-screen co-op so that got it instantly in my good books. It was also good fun online too.
• RandomTerrain #64 4 years ago

I wasn't that interested in this game before, but these screen shots do look pretty cool and Resistance was a laugh.

• m0thr4 #66 4 years ago

I hated Resistance when I first played it - it just seemed like Call of Duty with aliens. I came back to it some time later and decided to give it another chance.

The first quarter of the game is pretty turgid, but after that, it just gets better and better. The environments get more interesting, the weapons get more interesting and the graphics get a heck of a lot better and the gameplay is far less 'set-piece' driven than the Call of Duty series which simply spawns enemies at you until you reach a certain hot spot in the level map. Also, if you play through a second time, you get to find and use a whole set of new weapons that weren't available the first time round. The final quarter of the game features some utterly stunning graphics that, IMHO, outclass anything on the Xbox 360 (and, yes I have an Xbox 360 and a copy of Halo 3).

EDIT: Oh, and... well said kangarootoo.
