@Widge - Yeah, that's true about MGS4 and that's one of the things that makes that game so good and value-packed. However, few FPSs adopt this route, they're usually predominantly linear, the exception being the recent Far Cry 2. However, with that game I'm finding the lack of a proper narrative to be a little offputting as usually it is the story that compells me to play FPS campaign's right through to the end.

Wow, you really like making yourself look like an idiot don’t you, Gears 1 is still being played on Live now, and you think the second one with improved multiplayer and the new horde mode won’t be? You’re a silly little one aren’t you. I’m sure R2 will be played for a long time as well, but to think that Gears won’t be is laughable!

PS3 has this and LBP.

XBOX 360 has Gears 2, Fable 2

Every multplatform game will probably be better on the 360.

And i almost forgot LEFT4DEAD.

The competition between the 2 HD consoles is closer this year though.

this, LBP, naruto,valkryie,MS:PR.. etc...yes IT IS getting closer (surpassed)?
And as for multiplatform games being developed the 'other' way round i.e dead space, burnout, mirrors edge..etc will the same be still said??? ;)

Of course there are people still playing gears of war 1 MP... but that doesen't make the game a multiplayer phenomenon, it's actually very far form that.
RFOM, Halo3 and COD will dominate in that matter... only fans of the series will prefer Gears MP to one of the previously mentioned.


Oh and by the way the PS3 in 2008 have SOCOM, WIPEOUT HD, MGS4, RESISTANCE 2, LBP, MOTORSTORM 2 just to name a few...

Define 'proper RPG'. Fallout 3 looks and plays an awful lot like an RPG.

Weird how there's so much hate for the first Resistance game... checking Metacritic and GameRankings it averaged 86% which is be no means a score that suggests a bland, generic game. I get the feeling that it's the Europeans who didn't really like the game, the Americans in particular seemed to love it. I thought it was good too, easily deserving of a solid 8/10 from me. It wasn't particularly innovative, true, but the setting and story were intriguing and it was nice to actually play a good FPS exclusive on a platform that wasn't reknowned for good FPSs. I think that is what made it so memorable for me on the PS platform, good FPSs are ten a penny on the Xbox platform.

Well I think there are quite a few fans of it to make it a phenomenon, I understand that while it was number one on Live for over a year it didn’t have much competition, but I still think this will be up there in the top three for a long while, Horde alone sounds brilliant. That said though, I like it, so I would think that.

I thought the first one was dull, uninspired and uninteresting, so it's good to hear this one is apparently better. Still slim chance of me getting it, certainly any time soon, with all the releases around the corner. The game still needs a face, an identity, desperately, as there is nothing for me to "attach" to in Resistance. For all its machismo, Gears of War 2 has a very clear image, and it works for that game. Try to imagine it without Marcus Fenix and co. Resistance needs that hook.

The first game was wonderful in co-op. Really good fun.

You guys do know Insomniac said to properly complete the game will take 420 hours. Thats all awards in co-op, online and single player.

Dudefella - Gears of War is third person though whereas Resistance and its sequel are first person shooters. The difference is that for the most part you play a FPS as if it is you whereas with Gears you clearly controlling someone else so they need to be interesting since you're looking at them all the time. I don't think characterisation is essential for a FPS personally, I mean Half-Life's Gordon Freeman never speaks once, he's pretty much a non-entity really, but never stopped him being believable or prevented the story from being great. Master Chief is the exception for the Halo series but even then he never comes across as a real emotional person, mainly because for the majority of the game it is you playing through his eyes, he doesn't need to be, you provide the emotion! ;)

Naruto you say. I have tested the PS3 Naruto and the 360 Naruto sequel to the brilliant Rise of a Ninja. Trust me dude. Putting in Naruto as a positive for the PS3 was a mistake.

And The 360 version of Dead Space is more polished than the PS3 version. See Face off. I bet the same will be the case with Mirrors Edge also. Dont worry though the PS3 isnt miles behind the 360 anymore. Its still behind. See: exclusives, multiplatform, online service, pricepoint. You love your PS3 and thats a good thing. Dont let anyone ruin that for you.

HalfLife2 storytelling was nonexistant! Played well though. Even though Master Chief is essentially a big green spaceman, I found him more involving than old Freeman. I fear to mention Bioshock since it seems to send everyone spastic, but you don't even get to see your guy or know anything about him (as far as I've seen so far in the game) but good attachment there I found.

I did like the R1 storytelling, its just the continual chapter breaks and pauses coupled with a "lets hand hold you few the initial scrapes" approach really didn't help the game. Halo kicked off with a frankly awesome attack on a spaceship where R1 kicked off with a jaunt through York and about 5 enemies to shoot.

R2 apparently really launches into it so well done there, I think I will miss that kind of detached historical narrative that the woman bod did through the first game though.

Another one to the list... /wallet weeps.

@Widge - Resistance 2 starts from the point where the first game ended and if you haven't already I'd suggest you check out all three part videos from the start of the game on Gamersyde. It looks really, really great; very exciting and action-packed, just how I like my FPSs! :)

I'd love to have this, but I cannot afford either console nor game. I don't always find the more=better formula works in MP (Pandora Tomorrow is one of the best multiplayer games I've played, and it had 4 players), but it sounds pretty sweet.

As mentioned the PS3 lineup is making me think about getting a PS3, just the price which is the problem. I just can't afford one (No I am not 12, I have more important bills to pay).

Does still fit in the not needed catagory as my 360/PC/Wii are keeping me more than busy enough.

Games does look great, will be one to get if/when I get a PS3.
