Resident Evil Wiimake out this June News

Wii News by Tom Bramwell

28 April, 2009

Capcom has said that Resident Evil Archives - the Wii remake of the first Resident Evil game - will be released in Europe this June.

The Wiimake stars Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, as ever, and sends you through the original iconic mansion in search of truth, blood and hugs.

You can see how it's shaping up in our Resident Evil Archives screenshot gallery.

The game is out on 23rd June in the US, so expect it around then - and make sure not to confuse it with Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, which is very different.

It would be good for some original games to come out for the Wii. Instead we have game being re-released with wii controls.

So, I'm confused. What exactly is this? A full remake of Resi 1 on Wii? A port of the Gamecube Resi 1 remake with Wii controls tagged on? Or something completely different?

I'm guessing from the screenshots that it's not another on-the-rails shooter.

Can you hear that, Capcom? It's the sound of me not caring.

daz_john_smith: it's just a port of RE1 GC with some motion controls (I don't even know what, exactly) and apparently 480p (but not widescreen). Everything else is the same. Calling this a Wiimake is a bit too much on the part of Eurogamer, they should have called it a Wiiport.

Resident Evil 5 : 2nd best game of 2009, so far. Unexpected, but what an awesome game.

I think it's a good idea as many people would not have played the 2002 remake, however owning the GC version and the original on the DS i'll be leaving this!

I'll be buying because of my near-insane need to keep things tidy - not having the GC Memory Card and GC cable poking out the side is enough for me!

They could've admittedly made more of an effort I suppose.

I'll pass on this one. I already own the PS and GC versions so I don't need another version of the first Resi.

Christ on a bike, another bloody remake.

They could (should) have remade it in the style of Resi 4 Wii Edition, now that would have been a purchase.

It seems as if Resident Evil 4 was a blessing and curse for the Wii. It's sold very well so now Capcom think they can just recycle all the previous iterations too.

Wouldn't it be great to see a new title that uses (and refines) the RE4 template but with a whole new story and setting?

Thing is, Capcom are a company, who want to make money. The sooner people deal with that the better.

Both games are now difficult to find in the sort of condition that many people would want them. Since they were released both RE4 and RE5 have sold about 10 million units between them, thus, the fanbase has exploded.

Take that into account, and remember the Wii has sold a hundred billion consoles (or close enough) and there'll be a lot of people buying these lazy ports. It makes sense on Capcom's part.

its hard to believe how dated it looks from the screens on EG - considering it was only released a few years ago (like 7?). At the time i used to think it was one of the best looking games id ever seen and the atmosphere was amazing (as well as it being different enough to the original PS2 to warrent more play)

In fairness, REmake still looks gorgeous in the flesh, the pictures don't do the game justice.

Capcom have always done this though. The resi games have been ported to bloody everything.

Resi 2 even made it onto the Game.com, somehow... Although it was presumably made mostly of fail

Resident Evil 5 second best game of the year? I guarantee by year end it'll be lucky to be top ten.

I'm not one of those who bitched about the controls when it was only the demo out. Having now played the full game right through, I think the controls, although functional, could have been much more intuitive. However, the biggest problem with RE5 is that it's a complete rip off of 1) RE4, 2) Metal Gear Solid 4, 3) Gears of War, with no originality, a really thin plot, and cheap bosses. And that is absolutely shameful of Capcom on the back of the classic that was RE4.

Sweet!!
I donīt know why some of you are calling this "just a cheap port" because even though itīs not costing Capcom much to bring this over to the Wii, as a video game this is art and deserves to be assessable and brought to the attention of as many people as possible.
If you look at Wii sales and compare them with GC sales then we can clearly see that only a handful of Wii owners today had the GC and the opportunity to play this before.
I know i want to play it but i donīt know of any store that still sells GC games(i donīt live in a big city)

Iīm just curious, are you referring to Little Kings story as #1?

I'm skeptical about how much 480p will add to the game, given most of the screen is taken up with still backgrounds. I think that's why the GameCube original still looked gorgeous, you couldn't tell it wasn't progressive, nothing on screen moved at a particularly fast pace.

I don't necessarily have anything against ports, I agree that it's a positive thing that more people have access to a game. And indeed, any critisism over the lack of a 16:9 mode would ignore the fact that the backgrounds were probably not created to accomodate such an aspect ratio, so some cropping would be required - no thanks, I'd prefer 4:3 and not loose anything.

I guess it's hard for us long-term fans not to get too cynical about it though. I'd actually rebuy the game if it had enough extras of bonus features to justify it, so it still feels like a disappointment. But on the whole, it's great to see two of Capcom's best games are no longer limited to the GameCube.
