was expecting more from the score ..and really if you're a resident evil fan you should be expecting the control system (it'd be like marking a jrpg down for having turn based combat).

Atleast you got through the review without mentioning something stupid like racism - now having played the game and finished the story

And really.. does resident evil 4 with splitscreen/online co-op, in HD, really sound so bad?

lol how can some of you base on if you will buy a game or not on one person , not even your own, opinion?

To me that's hillarious and utterly daming of some of you and how you need people to tell you what to think.

anyway i've played through most of this game already and while i don't really disagree with anything in the review, i like it a whole lot and doubt anyone actually looking forward to it would be far disappointed. it's a pretty revision of one of the best games ever made - no less, little more.

if you guys ignore that 7 (impossible, i know) you'll probably have a whale of a time.

mad props to eurogamer for giving it the review it deserves without the hype. Fuck all you fanboys, this is not a great game. It is no longer survival horror, and if you look it as an action game, both GeoW and Dead Space wipe the floor with it.

So basically, it's RE4, optimised for co-op play with nicely upgraded graphics. Suits me just fine, in fact that's exactly what I wanted. I've always been a hardcore RE fan and I can understand why others would be disappointed by this games direction, I also agree with Krudster that perhaps Capcom should have released this as a kind of 'co-op spin-off' of the franchise rather than risking disappointing the die-hard fan base. For me though, I simply can't get enough of 3rd person shooters with offline co-op, so one set in the RE universe will certainly keep me and the Mrs happy for a good few days, for us the game will be a 10/10, so I'm really happy.

As for those upset about the score, READ the review and you will understand...As I'm sure most people do, I skipped to the score and felt my heart sink a little at the 7, but after actually reading the review, I realise this game is everything I expected it to be and now I want it even more than ever. Anyway, just go by the demo, you liked it, buy it, if you didn't, then go play something else.

a fair review of it, no shock really from the terrible demo but as RE4 is the weakest game in the series for me I knew long before the demo this would dissappoint me.

Lets hope Capcom draws more from this fantastic series than just the stop/shoot with the reboot part 2. 4 and 5 are best forgotten as lame attempts to bring shooter fans a RE game IMO.

Well this confirms my opinion of the demo. And unlike some of the whinging posts on here, that means I'm really looking forward to the game. This is all about the co-op and I had great fun playing through the demo with a friend. I wouldn't bother playing it solo though

And that my friend is exactly why people are whinging. All about the co-op, lol.

Ooh my goodness! I can't believe how gullible some people are.

Every other site has given RE5 at least a 8 or 9 out ten. Yet one reviewer gives it a 7 out of ten so does that it's an average game? So now you won't buy the game because of one reviewer's opinion? Really sad how some people can't make their own choices.

Remember a review is one person's opinion. Maybe if someone else at Eurogamer had reviewed it he could have given it an 8 or 9. Reviews are opinions.

Real RE fans are still going to get this game. And I can guarantee you by the end of this year this game will have sold at least 3 million copies. There are a lot of RE fans out there.

There in lies my problem come Wednesday/Friday. I LOVE RE and for all my whinging, hatred and disappointment of 4/4.5 and the whole reboot in general, the first half of 4 was enjoyable fun (though were any of you get it was RE style atmosphere is beyond me!) so I know I'll crack and pick this up :(

No, it's not just because of this review. It's a combination of other factors and this tipped the balance. I don't want a game designed around co-op at the expense of the single player experience. If both were great then fine but it seems co-op is the only fun option. That or spend 12 hours with some shit AI character.

Having watched numerous HD videos of this game and having spent most of yesterday repeatedly playing through both the 360 and PS3 demos, I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I'm immensely excited about playing this game. It's Resident Evil for crying out loud, I haven't played a bad one yet and that's despite the cheesiness of the dialogue, the daftness of the plot and the clunkiness of the controls.

I don't know what to make of EG's 7/10. On the one hand it makes me feels a teensy-weensy bit disappointed that they've not rated it as highly as Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube but then I remember they gave the excellent F.E.A.R. 2 just 5/10 and the dull, plodding Resistance 2 9/10. So, hurray, that means I might not agree with them and all will be right with the world! :D

I do agree about the dated controls though from playing the demo. I think they should have been overhauled for this game considering how action-orientated it has become throwing huge numbers of enemies at you. The controls are fine with a couple of enemies on-screen but when there's loads they become annoying, what with Chris' slow turning speed and clunkiness. He feels like a geriatric at times but looks like a pumped up muscleman. What gives? That said, the running camera is a vast improvement on the awful "roadie run" one that Gears of War uses, at least it doesn't obstruct your view in this game.

Roll on Thursday... I really can't wait to play this game even if ultimately it turns out to not be the best game in the series after all.

My god this game sounds awful.

The demo really put me off with its insistence that I use its control mechanism, not letting me invert the x-axis on the right stick view pretty much makes the game uinplayable for me. But the real killer was the crappy AI on the Sheva character. There are bad design decisions and there are terribly bad design decisions... Sheva falls into the latter category. Why the hell we need co-op in a Resi game is beyond me and defies belief.

And the puzzles? Where the fcuk are the puzzles?

Its bloody Resident Evil... it needs puzzles. Moreover it needs gems, red and blue gems, that fit into the eyes of a statue. What a complete waste of a sequel to have a game which is neither shooter nor puzzle but pretends to be both and fails on both accounts.

7 is a very generous score. 5 would have been more realistic to be honest.

Unless they fixed the x-axis inversion, in which case a 6 may be feasible.

That people are reacting to 7/10 as if it is a bad score just goes to show how tired people are of the ideas behind this once great franchise that nothing less than a 9/10 would convince them to get their wallet out.

Another blow for graphics over originality.

Someone mentioned Lost Planet and that uses the same MT Framework engine as Resident Evil, right? Shame that Capcom didn't take that game's excellent third-person control system and use it for this game. I've always found it strange why you have to press two buttons to shoot, use a knife and even reload in the Resident Evil games. Seems needlessly complicated IMO.

7/10 - Less racist than Halo!

I find Kristan's reviews generally OK. I have seen IGN (a site whose reviews I trust more than EG's) give this 9/10. I'm guessing it falls between the two.

As for not mentioning racism - fair play, Kristan. Other sites managed to review this game without dragging up that non-story. Perhaps Eurogamer is finally showing some maturity too.

@spookyzombie: we don't have the Edge score yet iirc, but that's besides the point. Eurogamer use the whole scale, they're bound to be bottom or near the bottom.

Stop using metacritic and read the reviews. Review scores made on different scales are uncomparable and therefore metacritic is useless:

1) Comparing different games is useless for many reasons including different reviewers, different times/prices/scores based on if something was released first (and is original) etc.

2) All sites measure on different metrics.

The only thing metacritic is good for is linking to the online reviews. Even their sampling of the conclusions is often bad. It's just a marketing gimmick.

Interesting question.

I mean for me Dead Space was a really great game, head, shoulders and waist above the awfulness of Alone in the Dark. I was actually surprised EG gave that game such a generous score, what with all the issues and bugs it had on the 360. It even managed to cram in controls that are ten times worst than ANY Resident Evil game!!! ;)

It would have be nice perhaps if Capcom had offered Resident Evil 5 with two variations of gameplay. One for the solo player with more puzzles and the other for co-op/with partner A.I. for a more action-based game as we have here. They could have had a disc for each for the 360. But that would have added immensely to the development time and costs and in this age of multiplayer/online games I guess Capcom felt that was what people wanted more than puzzles.

A shame really as the puzzle-solving aspects have always been what made survival horror games so unique, the blend of those (which were never that hard anyway but nevertheless added a bit of variety to the proceedings), exploring, the shooting bits and the obligatory boss sequences. We now have a game that apparently forgoes the exploring and puzzles in favour of lots of enemies and more shooting. And it's supposedly a shorter game too.

You can see where EG are coming from with the 7/10 rating really but it still doesn't stop me from looking forward to playing it from start to finish as I have with all the other Resident Evil games bar Nemesis which I've never played.
