For those who say "I pity you for having your opinion dictated by a game reviewer / Go play the game before you form an opinion on it";

So by that logic any published criticism on music/movies/video games is redundant?

So they got rid of the survival horror atmosphere and kept the survival horror control scheme

...
that was smart.

Excellent, I hope this score takes they nay sayers with it. I will need top Resident Evil 5 purists for the more difficult achievements and Speed Runs.

Loved the demo, played through it a fair few times to get to grips with it. Learned it. Owned it.

Bring on the full game.

I don't care for reviews or even this one.
However, anyone that even dares to claim that the controls (both movement and menu) is broken is either a liar or utterly delusional. The control's are borked, and nostalgia or the fact that its RE doesn't excuse anyone, let alone capcom.

So you go ahead and cry to the net and claim EG should give it 10/10. The control's are broken. Making it an action game with bad controls was dumb on capcom's part.

From having played through it nearly twice now, the controls are the least of its worries. The shooting controls at least. The inventory system during a crisis is pretty useless, and needlessly frustrating.

It does feel clunky to begin with, but not at all once you get going. It's all about the quick turn and generally giving yourself room.

Yes the controls are functional, yes they're usable but are they good.
They've turned it into an action game and they controls are slow paced and clunky - they worked well as part of a survival horror game but they don't suit an action game at all.
Obviously there are other more important problems but their whole approach to the series just seems backwards.
People have been complaining about the controls of RE games for years (rightly or wrongly). The thing that kept the series popular for years was the atmosphere and puzzles.
So they turn it into an action game with little or no atmosphere and the same slow paced, awkward, clunky controls!
How does that make sense?
Then there's turning it into a co-op game at the cost of the single player, again their focus was in the wrong place.

I wish Eurogamer would just ditch the scores and switch to a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" approach instead. These arbitrary numbers attached to the end of each review are causing way too much drama and bullshit.

OK Capcom, you win. I'm on holiday, I've been enjoying playing CVx today, my local is getting 5 in tomorrow, I have a credit note.

It's not what I want from RE but 4 was mildly amusing and at least this follows the story. Besides Capcom, you promised another reboot so I'll give a little cash if you reboot backwards, playing the old games are still gaming gold as CVx proved this afternoon! Well except for that little ginger turd Steve...

No 4 is the worst in the series, CV was a decent enough game. Cartoony graphics? I never ever thought that TBH it's quite sexy - even the ugly PS2 version!

@CountFapula - Speak for yourself.

Personally Code Veronica is my favourite Resident Evil so far. From the amazing opening cinematic right through the wonderfully eerie storyline through to the end, it was absolutely gripping and I just couldn't stop playing it. It is by far the most memorable game in the series for me with a perfectly gauged difficulty level and some neat puzzles. The Ashford twins were especially terrific, both sinister and camp, and I never saw THAT twist either. Kind of shocked me at the time.

Code Veronica is a wonderful game IMO and one of my favourite Dreamcast titles although I now own the X version for the GameCube which I can still play on the Wii (I knew there was a good reason for keeping that pile of junk!).

Cheers!

You know what? Some of my favourite games are 7/10. The flawed gems that you love even though you know there's a lot wrong with them.

People (and the industry at large) need to stop getting so hung up on scores under 8. If you're really into a specific genre, then really a 6 and above is going to be acceptable entertainment. But they don't have to be brilliant in every area to be enjoyable. it just so happens that it's our jobs as critics to be petty, and pick holes in things. It's what we do. Doesn't mean we don't still get a lot of enjoyment out of even the most flawed games out there, and this one of them, so yeah, it can be hugely enjoyable, AND still deserve a 7/10. Some people have evidently sussed that out by now, but others still cling on to the misguided belief that everything under an 8/10 is worthless, which is a frankly wrongheaded.

You know, it is possible to be a fanboy of a genre AND be objective.

I personally cant wait for this. Long time resi fan (think i played resi evil first on the sega saturn and then psone!) and loved the demo. I heard the game does some nice fan service in terms of the storyline so im looking forward to another wacky tale with a few twists.. maybe old characters making a comeback! Glad to see the lickers are back from the awesome resi 2 as well!

Really amazed at how some people think part 4 is the worst of the series!! For me its easily the best and one of the greatest games ive played in the genre. But thats whats great about these forums. I love reading what other people think and its better that you get contrasting opinions.

Like any other game i like and others hate i can see why this game has its haters. Yes for some the controls will be off putting and co-op single player wont be anywhere near as good as the classic single campaigns used in every other version. But for me its exactly what i want. Ive heard its just like a reboot of resi 4 with co op and nice visuals. Im looking forward to playing through the game co-op with my mate as it should be a lotta fun, some good replay value with extra modes, weapons etc.

Very tired now so am rambling but so far in the core series my list from best to worst is:

RE4 (wii edition)
RE remake (GC)
RE2
RE:CV
RE0
RE3:Nemesis

"I honestly can't believe people think code veronica is the best.

The others all had photorealistic backgrounds that were atmospheric, and though the characters were much better compared to the old days, the graphics looked like a pixar version of resident evil as opposed to the darker, broodier, more realistic graphics of say the remake, 0 or the outbreak games, which really hurt it.

Some of the enemies were incredibly lame too (lol albinoid).

Like I said I have it's moments, but not in the top five of the series now that five is out."

CountFapula, you do realise that Code Veronica came out a fair while before the REmake, RE 0 or the Outbreak games, right? I'm not saying CV is the best myself and I'm certainly not saying you shouldn't compare them. I'm just suggesting that maybe you shouldn't be too harsh on it, considering that it was the first Resident Evil title out on that generation.

Anyway, I've been playing REmake lately, and I have to say that even today, the graphics on that game blow me away every time I play it - and admittedly, the graphics of Code Veronica are fairly weak in comparison. But as I said, the game is a few years older than REmake.

Thats why I dont ever even regard the score as important. I simply READ the reviews, and wont play demos. I play the game and make my own mind up. Yes I can be swayed towards a game due to reviews but Ill rarely be pushed away from one, unless its critically bombed.

TBH the review sounded a little childish, but then again GamesTM reviews have 99% of the time matched my opinion. EG seems to consider some games golden that I personally think are poor and vice versa.....

I have preordered Res5, and havent played the demo. I refused to. As a long term fan I am a little worried about the emphasis on multiplayer as I think Resident Evil games are best played alone. BUT I'm interested to see how it works out :D
IMO they need to remake 2,3,CV like they did Res 1 on the cube and leave Resident Evil to those that can appreciate it for what it is.

I dont like firstperson shooters but I wouldnt say Call Of Duty 4 would be better if it was 3rd person and had puzzles.... I cant see how resident evil would benifit from the opposite.

Oh and the answer to best resi game is the Remake.... as said above even today its amazing.... and graphically I dont see it ever aging tbh.

@CountFapula - You seem to be focusing too much on the graphics as a reason for why the other earlier Resident Evil games are better but notice that I didn't once mention them when stating why I like Code Veronica so much. That's because it was the gameplay and story together which made the game so great, the visuals were just the icing on the cake.

But even so, calling the backgrounds on Resident Evil photo-realistic is pushing it a bit. At best even back in 1996 they looked like static hand-drawn paintings and the crude 3D models often looked out of place and at odds on top of all that detail. Personally I found Code Veronica's visual style more consistent with character models that at least blended in perfectly with the 3D environments. Of course, when Resident Evil Remake and Zero came out on the GameCube technology had moved on sufficiently that 2D backgrounds and 3D models looked far less jarring but that meant that the camera was static leading to some awkward angles where you couldn't see enemies properly. 3D might be less detailed but IMO it's far preferable to static 2D backgrounds, purely for gameplay reasons.

This is something I hear a lot, but I'd reverse it. If you're really into a particular genre, the chances are you've played more examples of it, and are in a better position to be naturally critical. So a "good fun but uninspiring" example of the FPS genre - Fear 2, let's say - might resonate brilliantly with someone who's just getting into shooters after a lifetime of RTS games. It would probably be more difficult for that person to set apart that game from another, more interesting FPS release.

I'll happily play a 6/10 racing game for weeks on end if something about it interests me - because I have very little idea of what a 'good' racing game is supposed to be like. Give me a flawed RPG, on the other hand, and I'll throw bricks at it.

Wow guys, way to go in showing your support for the series and totally agreeing with some asshole you probably haven't even met before. For all of you who say, "Oh yeah I can totally see why they gave the game a 7/10 because of the demo," you faggots probably haven't played the real game yet so shut the fuck up. Maybe you ought to make your own decision and play the game before you believe some fucking douche bag who just gave it this score because it wasn't a "true" Resident Evil title. I'm sorry that I am being a fanboy here but that's the whole point. You're supposed to accept whatever direction the series is heading unless it is blatantly terrible. As far as I can see, nobody bitched about how Resident Evil 4 was so different from the series. In fact it was praised by critics everywhere and was getting game of the year so much that it's dick was sore from all of the game of the year awards it fucked. Now for some reason, people apparently hate this direction of the series four years after Resident Evil 4 came out. What the fuck is wrong with you people? I know damn well that after Resident Evil 4 came out and Capcom announced Resident Evil 5, all of the fanboys, including myself, creamed our pants. I mean what the hell? How the hell did this game get a 7/10? All I see is that this game is Resident Evil 4 but with co-op. As far as I am concerned, this game should have easily gotten at least an 8 and a 9 at max. No I am not conceited enough to say "Give the game a 10, it's Resident Evil 5!!!" because although I am a fan boy, I am not fucking stupid enough to know that the game deserves an absolute 10. And to stop any sort of come backs after what I just said, yes I am defending the game and saying it should get a higher score and I know it has it's flaws but I'll be damned if I let some douche baggy reviewer say that it is just a total repeat. Well no shit!? Like I said, everybody loved Resident Evil 4 and Capcom figured, well why not make the next game similar. I mean for fucks sake, all of the previous Resident Evil titles kept similar game play mechanics but still moved in a different direction. Look at Resident Evil 2 and 3. Those were so different from Resident Evil 1, those two games might as well have been called action games too. I'll also be damned if I let the general audience of the game series itself say, "this is an average game." I guess what I am trying to say is that I am pretty sure you assholes have no fucking respect for the producers/game designers and you should all just go fuck yourselves. If you all feel the game is so "mediocre" then maybe you should just fucking forget about Resident Evil 6 because I know damn well Capcom will change the direction of the series again and then people will say, "oh no, why isn't it like Resident Evil 4 or Resident Evil 5!? We like cock because we can't accept the fact that game designers try to change the way a series is made for the better." Well, I'd say that about sums up what I have to say. I pretty much wanted to out comment all of you other faggots who said this wasn't a great game. I don't care about what you have to say to me or if you comment me back. I know this rant has many flaws in the arguments, but like I said, you can all fuck yourselves for all I care. If you do message me due to this, I will just delete it. In fact, the only reason I created an account on this faggy website was because I was pissed off and wanted to write some sort of non ignorant comment. As far as this website goes, I have never seen this website as a credible source because all of you assholes in Europe get the censored version of video games anyways due to violence. You fucking pussies. Ironically though, you have no problem with shitting on one another. So congrats on that and I suppose that will be it for now. Remember, if you want to comment back to me, I'll be sure to read it and reply back because that's what I do. Fuck you guys and go play some other game that "isn't" a let down. Fucking douche bags. As a final final note though, I am also glad this website is great at knowing how video game companies are spelled. I must have used "Capcom" at least two times before this and apparently it doesn't exist. Awesome considering that they were the company that made the entire series in the first place. One other thing I have to say before ending this rant for good. All of you assholes who dissed Capcom and said, "Oh this game is terrible," why don't you try programming something even close to this you fucking assholes. I bet that 99 percent of you don't even have close to a fucking clue what it takes to program something this difficult. Why don't you try using C++, creating the game world, updating the game loop, creating classes for the enemies, weapons, etc, calculating the physics of what it takes to move the character, putting in collision detection, including AI behaviors such as cohesion, flocking, path finding, a finite state machine, and whole bunch of other shit that I can't even mention because I don't fucking know everything about what they put in there but I damn well know those are the basics. Then again, I probably just wasted some more energy in my fingers telling you guys that because once again, 99 percent of you probably went "what the hell does any of that mean?" Point being, I hate all of you. Especially the commentators on this page. All of you are the reason why the series has started to suck, if it even has started to do so in the first place.

^ don't know where to start with that one.

codename veronica was balls. @Darren - you seriously liked the story? mecha-wesker? that midget with the napoleon complex? his laugh? i mean, the resi series has seen some campy nonsensical plotlines in its time but CV was surely a low point.

and i side with those who didn't like CV's 3dness. it was sort of an uncanny-valley thing - the previous resi games had perfected their 2d-with-knobs-on approach (both visually and otherwise), but CV just felt like a bad 3d game to me. it was also apparently developed separately from resi 3 and as such didn't include the great improvements that game brought forward, such as the dodging and more elaborate weapon/ammo upgrades.

i'm liking the look of 5. doesn't work in single player, works in co-op, and the controls are marmite. played demo, loved demo, will buy.

seriously though im a bit of a startrek fanboy but it doesnt mean i have to like generations, and im also a bit of a manga/anime fan but i draw the line at bubblegum crisis (ninja scroll ftw!!).
just because this is the direction that capcom has decided to take with the resident evil series doesnt make it the best thing for the series.
would it really have hurt to add in the OPTION for move/shoot ?the games already a departure for the series anyway.

Thing is Capcom cant please everyone. Now if RE4 was the same as the previous ones in terms of puzzles, gameplay etc loads of people would of moaned that the series hasnt changed. After playing veronica i felt that it needed to evolve. I mean i did enjoy veronica (lol that sounds dodgy) but you could tell that the franchise needed a shot in the arm.
The controls are a pain at times but i really think it would detract from the game too much if you incorporated gow/dead space type controls. Maybe we will see this in resi 6 and it all works out for the better. I hope it does!

As long as they keep producing the games i enjoy (RE2 and RE4 kick ass)then im not really bothered where they take the franchise. I was getting a bit sick and tired of constant backtracking and stupid puzzles that became standard with all the earlier games. In re and re2 i didnt mind the puzzles but after that i got a bit tired of the same stuff being done over and over.

Well, the review being contradictory within itself (I mean, for example, I love it how on one hand Capcom "sold out" by making Normal too easy and on the other hand it was a brilliant move for them give you an infinite machine gun after completing the game to make Veteran a cake walk), I can understand the safe score of 7 as the reviewer didn't know which way to think about this one.

But, this means I can probably walk into any games store on friday and pick up a copy. Excellent.

People like you should be fed to wild bears. Just the use of the word "backtracking" in relation to the RE series shows all you want is simplistic, limited, level-by-level dated videogame bullshit, as if every game should be like Super Mario Bros 1, no way to go but straight ahead ("oh noes it's so confuezing otherwise!") and the screen is even locked in forward movement. Well, whoop dee doo, you get your wish, because that's what nearly every single game series is becoming these days. Linear, limited, empty, mindless bullshit, that's all you're going to get in the foreseeable future. I hope you're real fucking happy.

I think if your a fan of RE then you will probably be drawn to it, someone like me who has maybe seen a couple of the movies, will perhaps see things that they dont like in it. So its horses for courses. I really didnt enjoy it, controls were a pig as far as i was concerned (I know there are other control configs, but not being able to run and turn, or two buttons to just hit with a knife.) - just unfriendly and would perhaps put off new people to the franchise.

Anyway glad other people are loving it... its probably for the best i have way too many games to play.

@ landmaster - yup, second that. To anyone sitting on the fence, just buy it and make up your own mind. Its great :)

Also, regarding the review (1st paragraph):

"the glacial turning speed."
There are 5 turn speed settings in the options menu, normal (3) being the default. Fastest is plenty quick.

"the unwieldy inventory system."
The game allows you to custom bind a weapon or item to each d-pad dir ( including herbs and grenades), hardly ever need to access the inventory.

Started this last night on co-op via Live, on Veteran diificulty. After the two of us cursing and swearing for about 40 minutes due to the difficulty level and controls, it all clicked. Three hours later and we'd progressed nicely - thoroughly enjoying every minute. In co-op it's fantastic. It mostly looks amazing and the controls, once you get used to them, are not a problem. At all. We'll definitely be back on it tonight. For what scoring is worth it's a solid 9 for me at the moment - having a slightly different type but just as much fun as we did playing through GoW2 on hard.

I would strongly recommend that everyone playing co-op plays on Veteran. Beyond the incredibly tricky first level it seems to get a fair bit easier (although quite how much of that is just the old Resi 4 reactions coming back I'm unsure). I really wouldn't want any less of a challenge - put it that way.

And look at it this way - completing it on Standard to get an unlimited ammo assault rifle to make Veteran easier is clearly for girls. :)

I'm unsure what EG seems to want to be different these days - it seems that more and more their scoring is pretty different to the general consensus. Not that it bothers me - I couldn't care less about scores. I ended up loving Alone in the Dark despite all it's many and varied flaws and think Dead Space is an instant classic, so what do I know eh?

Buy it - if you're not dead inside (ohoho!) you'll love it.

Playing this on Co-op and loving every moment!
The game is intense and the fear factor is still there! The introduction to a 'returning' creature was handled so well, having to move quietly through that hall and not kicking open that door.

My cousin and I were aware of the inevitable, but we were hoping that playing by the book would buy us enough time...and then... xD

I got the day off and he's got work, so I can't play it right now, but the plot is peaking and I'm gagging to get back onto it *drools*

Also the Library in the game documents the very begininng of the series in pure detail, individual character backgrounds are a fantastic read too, so I'll be doing more of that later, whilst I wait, patiently *twitch*

Oh yeah it's a good game, definitly deserving of a higher score, but that's just me, probably enhanced by the fact that I'm playing with someone who knows how to basis of simply 'playing a game.'

9/10

After playing the demo I so nearly came to cancelling my pre-order, but now having the game I'm so glad I didn't.

The controls seem fine and the game is really gripping.

If you were unsure, give it a go, it defo be worth it!!!

Spent most of last night playing it on co-op; a few thoughts:

+ Its better than I would have expected from the demo.
+ It's visually quite spectacular
+ Co-Op is a lot of fun.

- Controls are horrible, I'm sorry. Dead Space is so much better.
- The inventory system is awful, a total chore to deal with.
- Despite the shiny graphics it feels overly familiar.

No matter how much you're enjoying it, you have to admit it could and should have been better.

Yeah I'm loving this so far. Controls have never been an issue with me as I always like the resi games and thought it added to the tension. In some ways I do miss the puzzles but I'm used to that now as I liked the direction re4 took and this just seems like another great addition. Gameplay wise it's evolved, but at least it still follows the overall storyline, and so far loved some of the references to earlier games shown in cutscenes.

Co op has been excellent so far and hasn't been a problem and had a blast playing online with a mate last night for 3 hours!
Looks like it's got some replay value as well with the mercernaries mode and extra weapons to collect and other bonus stuff.
It would of been great if they had also added in brief cutscenes from the earlier games so you could get a nice recap of the story so far, but as it stands the text files do a good job and cover some good stuff in the timeline.

So far I'm up to 3.2 and loving it! Job well done capcom!
