People saying that Eurogamer gives low reviews to get more visitors: Where is your proof? Do you know them personally? Did you speak to them? Do they really need to earn money by doing this? Or are you suffering from paranoia? Think a bit next time you write something like that.

I've read the reasons why he doesn't like RE 5, they're plausible, especially the fact that (and other reviews confirm this) the single player is nothing special and instead only co-op is fun to play. This (single player) was what RE was known for.

It's a bit like when Need for Speed turned into a tuning game. If I want to play co-op i can start Earth Defence Force 2017. This is a SHAME. But hey, at least we still got Bioshock 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Mafia 2 this year.

For the people complaining about the EG review: Read the review on IGN UK and tell me honestly that the text matches the 9/10 score.

If you can't be bothered, try these choice snippets:

"it's tough to justify Resident Evil 5's clunky, cumbersome controls. That applies to movement, combat and even the game's camera - and, with the likes of Dead Space and Gears of War perfecting third-person play"

"this new focus has come somewhat at the expense of the single-player game. It's still a massively entertaining romp but there's significant disparity between Resident Evil 5's two-player level design and the capabilities of partner Sheva's AI."

"a number of sequences that range from simply counter-intuitive to virtually broken."

"On normal mode it's a disappointingly breezy romp and, at around 12 hours long, you'll probably feel slightly short-changed."

From IGN

"This is where RE5 truly shines, both literally and figuratively. With the screen all to yourself, you'll marvel at the beautifully rendered environments, from the dilapidated villages surrounded by golden sand to misty wetlands populated by shield-wielding tribesmen. And Capcom has included some major incentives to drink in your surroundings."

"It's a cool touch and just one of the many unlockable features that add to Resident Evil 5's high replay value."

"And even if you managed to find every treasure, every emblem and every secret the first time around, you'll still want to dive back into the game for the Mercenaries mode, which is unlocked when you complete the game."

Are you guys quoting from seperate US and UK reviews?

What score went with what text? Or did they both give it 9/10?

I'm not saying its a total bust, but really 9/10 despite serious issues with the controls, AI, gameplay, and overall campaign length?

7/10 doesn't seem that unreasonable to me.

@kangarootoo

My quotes were from the IGN UK review, the US review is very similar but you get the feeling that the writer was playing mainly with a friend. Issues with AI are skirted around, and in fact the single-player experience is barely mentioned.

Those seem more like cool extra's which could add a lot to a great game, shame the basics aren't there then reading from their own review (or not enough).

7/10 on those grounds doesn't sound unreasonable to me either. Just didn't feel you were portraying the whole picture.

My gripe with the scoring is some games get let off when they have the same faults, prime example being GTA4, which surely most people would say was around an 8, nowhere near a 10.

I adore RE 4, so if this is more of the same, then thats fantastic.

I really do wish it had a true single player mode though, co-op's great, but as an optional extra, not when it comes at the expense of the singe player mode...

Still a day 1 purchase from me, and personally I love the stop and pop controls, I hate aiming with the right analog....

Have you actually played the full game?

IGN UK actually say that there are better ways of doing it. That is nowhere near the same as saying the game doesn't accomplish the basics.

My car could go faster or handle better, but as long as it runs it is still accomplishing the basics and necessitating what is required of it.

Read,

I said based on their own review, they played it, they shot down aspects which are basic to good design, all the xtras in the world can't fix that.

I only played the demo. But didn't promise a whole lot. But I will agree that 80% of the demo's out there suck compared to the game itself (Blue Dragon, Dead Space, etc)

Sneetch, I agree that the point of a demo is to showcase the game. But if a demo mispresents the game for whatever reason (such as the recent Riddick demo, which reduced the Riddick experience to a mediocre FPS - something the full game is so much more than... assuming it keeps the Butcher Bay feel about it), should we dismiss it on principle? Nose, cut off. Face, spited.

I sit corrected. You're right, of course: dismissing it based solely on a poor demo would be a bad idea, but it's an even worse idea for the developers/publishers to bring out a demo that isn't indicative of the final game experience: it'll put people off both ways, those who buy the final game expecting that FPS will be disappointed, those who were going to buy for the stealth-'em-up may not bother expecting it to be a FPS instead.

Also, I believed (perhaps wrongly) that the demo was a fair representation of the final game, with the same flaws and problems as the game, so if you like the demo you'll probably like the end game and so on and so forth.

@MattDamon - Aren't you generalising a bit there by saying that 'most' people would give GTA IV around 8/10? How do you know that?

You don't, you're just basing that assumption on the views of the vocal minority who post on internet forums. The game sold 6 million copies I believe so unless you can speak to all those people then there's absolutely no way you can be sure what 'most' people think/thought of it. ;)

Personally, I think GTA IV was and still is worthy of 10/10 and I couldn't care less whether anyone agrees with that or not.

Absolutely. The purpose of a demo is to act as an advert, so of course it SHOULD represent the final game experience as closely as possible. Sometimes stuff goes wrong though, such as in the two examples mentioned. And how many times have we seena trailer that looked great, only for the film to be bobbins (or, less often in film, the other way around).

I also recall the Crackdown demo, which DID represent the gameplay of the full game very accurately, but for whatever reasons a lot of people (such as myself) didn't "get it" first time around. It took a second visit to the demo for them to discover that there was actually a very strong title in there, and when they bought the full game they were very happy with it.

Hopefully slip ups like that are not that common as it would make demos pretty pointless (other than the good ones being like short games for free) if they weren't reliable. At the end of the day though, what we as gamers want is fun games to play, so we should seek them out even if first appearances deceive.

I'm still picking it up because I somehow feel that this will be a game that get's much better the more times you play it. I'm fortunate to be a compulsive gamer who replays good games countless times until I master them and I think alot of complaints about this game are too early. No mention in the review of the awesome "shoot them in the face then run up and punch, kick, stomp them" until they die gameplay which was the strength of RE4 and will remain the strength of the gameplay with this one. That's HOW IT WAS DESIGNED AND NO MENTION OF IT IN THIS FUCKIN" REVIEW!!! Sorry...

On another note...PEGGLE THIS WEEK!!!

Review hits the mark imo. The score doesnt bother me, I'd prolly give it the same judging by what I've read of the final version. I know a few guys who got the Asian version last week and they said what I was expecting : ''Resi 4 with a nice lick of HD paint, and co-op which (as Eg's reviewer notes) makes it too easy on the default difficulty and shortens an already short game.''

For me the length is a big issue. According to the guys I know they finished it in under 10 hours. Resi 4 took them up to 20 hours or so first time. Resi 4 did have some backtracking but it had a great deal of content.

I'm disappointed that Capcom got lazy with the series after Resi 4(Resi 4 is one of my favourite games ever btw, it is paced outstandingly). They appear to have taken the ''next gen gameplay on a current gen console'' reviews for Resi 4 a tad too literally with development of 5. Then decided to include the popular feature consoles have had the last few years: co-op. I still can't believe they kept the canned animations from Resi 4.

Anyhoo, I will give it a rental.

I will still picks it up, disappointed that Capcom stuck by the antiquated control of stop and shoot, doesnt work. I loved AvP1 marine level which was fast moving game but with freaking lots of frights!

You can see Dead Space which was a great new first entry of a new franchise and worked very well, I found the demo disappointing and so did my friends. I will get it on X360 as got more mates to play co op with, which are apparently very essential for a better game compared to AI.

I m one of the xbot crowd who brought down the game! Heck I played the whole series starting with 1 and again 1 on Gamecube and up to Umbrella Chronicles.

Still getting it however it may ranks in the lower half of all RE games instead of the instant classic which is a heart breaker for me.

7/10 seem very deserved, but heck IGN quotes still doesnt give a 9/10 impression!

Eurogamer disappoints sometimes especially with recent Resistance 2 9/10?!! WTF? Really poorer cousin of the first game.

Still looking forward to RE5 weekend!

If i were a reviewer I'd have given GTA4 a 7 personally.. If i could - i wouldve given it less, but that would've invoked a fanboy backlash against my imaginary reviewing site..

If i couldnt be arsed to play it through the end (completed all the other gta's) then it cant be that good.

As for Resi5.. the demo put me right off...

I really fail to see what's incoherent about my post, maybe you can't fit the pieces together yourself but here goes.

Greybeard posted the negatives of the IGN review, you the positives, still with me?

Your positives are nice extras but do fuck all for the gameplay itself which as Greybeards post pointed out are quite clear even to the 9/10 IGN review, yes?

You asked me if I played the game. I said no.

But I wasn't talking about that in the first place, I was talking about your citing the IGN reviews positive points. But to answer your question completely I mentioned I did play the demo, and expressed my feelings that playing a demo could very well not be the best thing to do nowadays.

There:P

After Dead Space, GoW...the controls seem to rigid & dumb to enjoy...Plus why the hell do I have to wait to find someone at home to play the game with to get a better experience - my wife is not a gamer, or my parents, friends usually prefer online gaming sessions & shouldn't have to call them around just to enjoy the game more. Suppose i want to play at 1am?!?!...Personally I think this game is gone wrong the direction. It would have been great to remain a better single player experience with more horror in it + no silly typical strerotype (for games) absolutely perfect looking & build without a hair out of place, male/female characters that look like they should be on a airbrushed photo shot on Fashion Magazine (Selling hair products) rather then save the world from zombies!

However, I shall continue to be amused by the deranged bleats of those who believe it should have had a different score, and the review is rubbish, and the site sucks etc. etc. ad nauseum. Didn't like the demo too much. Seems to be getting 9/10 everywhere (except here, Edge & CVG). No amount of 9/10 will make me like something I don't. Besides which, I trust Edge and EG over anyone else.

As for not basing a decision on a demo, that's just bobbins. Just how much different is the control method going to be in the final game? Yes, I know if Resident Evil of old, but for me that's the problem.

Still got the demo and may give it another go. Then again, I may not.

Phew, I dunno, people taking a 7/10 review of an installment in a series they love so personally, who would have thought it?

I've owned 4 of the games and never finished one of them. RE4 the last and whilst I enjoyed much of it, I grew tired of the constant inventory management and antiquated save system. I also never was a fan of the control system, so add that together and reading this review it sounds like I will take a miss this time around.

I enjoy the resident evil series for the simple fact that you have to scavenge for weapons and ammo that it doesn't spoon feed you with instant saves and limitless inventory. The controls could be refined but the point of the series is its about survival and making choices, take that away and it loses its unique feel.

The dumbing-down of almost every aspect of the gameplay is depressing, if not unexpected. There are even turret gun sections.

Bereft of puzzle and exploration,

Well, I kinda expected something like this, but that settles it. Never buying it, never playing it. Fuck Capcom, fuck their shit.

In fact, fuck all of the game industry with their boring ass grey looking shitty limited linear shooter puke that might as well be on-rails for all intents and purposes. I've only been re-playing old games (and playing ones I've missed) lately, and this is why. I'm done, I'll be back when they grow out of this retarded phase and actually start making real games worth playing again.

and the removal of the needless backtracking that used to pad out many of the previous titles.

And it's fucking bullshit like this that led to this sorry state of affairs.

hmm, I guess this reviewer saw RE5 kind of like the "digitally enhanced" versions of Star Wars (in other words, it was no good). I see it as more like the Director's Cut of Bladerunner (ie, improving upon something already so great). That may be the nerdiest metaphor ever written, but I guess I certainly fall under the "Love it for nostalgia" category. I just don't find the controls that much of a hindrance, and I think many people who do haven't played RE4.
