Dead Space, the demo was bobbins

I too thought the demo was crap and my friends have since recommended I buy it. I'll be getting Dead Space in place of RE5.

deadspace had me shittin my pants most of the way through without having to resort to nailing my feet to the floor everytime i wanted to shoot.

Project Zero is really scary and you can still move whilst shooting the camera. That's not my main problem with RE5, since I still love playing RE4. My issue is the with mandatory co-op and the associated compromises.

I wouldn't mind if this was another RE4 in HD, but without puzzles or exploration? there was little enough of that in 4 already... was there really need to replace them with a retard proof minimap? This dumbing down trend is sad.

Downloaded the demo, laughed at the pathetic control scheme, quit and deleted said demo.

And can all the moaning fanboys PLEASE shut up if a score or review doesn't appeal to them. I'm sorry this website destroyed all your hopes and dreams with a 7/10.

@ shatulance - " wont be gettin it based soley on the fact of not being able to move while aiming....lazy programming the way i see it."

Well you see it wrong then. That is a design issue, not a programming issue. It would have actually taken more code to make the player stop while aiming.

"I have seen IGN (a site whose reviews I trust more than EG's) give this 9/10."

*snigger*

Yeah, that comment made me spill my coffee too ...

Anyway, I am not even that bothered about the controls (even though some of the videos over at Gamersyde look rather stupid with Chris walking, then stopping, then walking again, then stopping, only to throw a grenade into a room full of infected who were kind enough to wait patiently for their own fragging until the player has come to grips with the 'stop and go' mechanics)

What totally turned me off of it, though, was the fact that they used the same canned animations from RE4 and just put an HD skin on it. That, the forced co-op, and zombies on bikes, for crying out loud.

Shame, really.

Another series dumbed down and made easy for the x-box crowd. What a shame. It will still be a good action packed gore filled romp and a half, but it could have been so much more.

Sorry, but the generic "Lazy programming" complaint is reeled out all too often, and usually (as in this case) to point out a design flaw.

Eurogamer, most of your review is spot-on, and most importantly - the score. I have played the game myself, first 4 levels of it, and the score which I gave based on what I've played was also 7/10, but my criticism was much much harsher, and I find your tone too forgiving at times (I don't know - maybe it was a diplomatic move), but anyway I'm glad someone had the balls to flop it.

I don't know that the controls are exactly "failed", they're the same as Resident Evil 4's and that got great reviews. That was then though and now people expect more responsive controls in a third-person shooter so they now feel clunky and restrictive. If Gears of War or 50 Cent: BotS had used Resident Evil 5's control scheme then they'd have been slated and rightly so.

Granted, I got used to them them in the RE5 demo but I do agree that they could and should have been improved on for this game. Why go through all the effort of adding co-op and making the game look snazzy and lush in HD if you're going to leave the clumsy controls untouched? Why do I have to hold LB down then press RT to use the knife, why do I have to press LT and press A to reload the gun? Why does the athletic, muscular-looking Chris Redfield control like a tank? Why can he not move backwards and shoot at the same time?

Ah yes, because the game designers thought they added tension to the game. I see...

Exactly. But you can't really blame the devs - visit any forum, and a gazillion of people cry how they won't buy game X or Y unless it has a coop mode and/or extensive (other) multiplayer modes, whether it fits the game or not.

Meh.

I think a few mistakes were made in the implementation of the single player mode. Specifically those surrounding what happens if your partner dies. Left 4 Dead shows that co-op and single player experiences can live side by side quite well, just so long as you don't bugger up the design on either side of the fence.

ResE5 seems to have started off wityh co-op in mind, and carried too much of that into the sp experience.

In my brief experience of the demo, although I was struggling with the controls I was managing to at least stay on my feet. But I was under pressure and not really given to focussing on too many things at once. My game came to an end when Shiva died, out of sight and out of mind, 'cos I was far too busy trying to keep myself alive. Not good for a first experience.

Totally agree with this.

I didn't like it but ended up getting as a swap. I'v loved the finished game.

From what i've played it's better than RE5 but i'll still get that.

""Another series dumbed down and made easy for the x-box crowd"

from a template used for the PS and Gamecube crowd some years back i.e. gamers

"oh well, i am going to wait a few more months before i buy a xbox360. shame... " if you've ignored over three years worth of games i seriusly doubt you'll get one.

I have played through first three chapters of RE5, solo, on default difficulty and I didn't find Shave's AI to be detrimental to the experience. Granted, this is not the RE of old, as Kristan points out: o exploration, no puzzles, it's an action-packed, set-piece lead game, but as such it can comfortably be played solo. I think my AI partner died only once during all that time and even that was clearly my fault.

It's only deemed 'getting away with it' if the core game is shit and it needs redeeming features. Uncharted didn't, RE5 does.

@Meho - I take it the checkpointing in this game is good enough that if you or Sheva do die you don't have to tediously redo large sections of the game over and over again?

I noticed in the gameplay videos I've seen on YouTube that "Checkpoint" appears relatively frequently in the top left hand corner of the screen, usually after a set-piece, but I've also seen "Saving" too. Are these "Checkpoints" saved or does the game only save at certain points where it says "Saving"? In other words, if I quit the game after a "Checkpoint" appears, can I then resume from that point?

If there are 6 chapters it seems I've abandoned the game about halfway through. I totally agree with the score given to the game, as a single player experience it is pitiful. I think the worst part is Sheva. She will stand behind you and shoot you in the back because the AI is too stupid to look for a clear line of fire. Likewise she will run up to enemies to do her roundhouse kick and take you out at the same time. It's almost not worth giving her any ammo either as she rattles through it at an alarming pace and manages to kill very little. She seems totally broken.

Overall the game just feels very dumbed down. I know Capcom have said they now aim to make games that appeal more to the Western market, but they seem to have completely missed the point with this game, which is all the more flabbergasting when you consider how influential RE4 was on Western game design! Forget the racism debate, the controversy is how Capcom could have turned out such a half-baked sequel that will stick with this entry.

Sounding like a stuck record as I frequently do, the AI in Left 4 Dead is mostly pretty amazing. I've only twice seen it do something annoying, and even that was really just because it wasn't psychic to my plans.

The bad AI in Res5 probably wouldn't matter so much if your own progress wasn't so dependant on it. If they had simply made her invulnerable during sp games, it would have perhaps solved a lot of the problems (I for one might have finished the demo).

@UncleLou - There seems to be two types of gamers. There are those like me who prefer single player experiences and see multiplayer/online functionality as a bonus for those that want it, and there are those who won't play a game if it doesn't have any co-op or online mode. Too many developers seem to be catering for the latter in my opinion.

I personally don't see why the co-op couldn't have been saved for the Mercenaries mode so the developers could invest more time in the solo campaign for Resident Evil 5. While having a partner in the game is a nice idea, I don't think Resident Evil works as well if you have someone there *all the time* as it removes a lot of the suspense. She should have just been used for the odd set-piece to add some variety to the gameplay.

excellent review

when compared to ign uk 9.0

Shinji Mikami should of worked on this game

or hell they should of tried to do Biohazard Outbreak with resi 4 controls

any of those

would of been better than making resident evil 4.5

but the masses are still gonna buy the game

I think this will be a budget purchase for me

still got hours more left in SFIV

Fanboys of what? Worthy sequels? 7 is a good score? When have you ever seen someone stick 7/10 on a game box or in an advert? Never, especially in the case of the latest instalment of a franchise that's used to much higher. £40 games should be marked on a scale of four scores: 10, 9, 8, fail.

Well, the demo was awful and the text of part of the review reads like the full game is pretty awful as well. I can only conclude that this 7 is a result of bribery, when an honest score would have landed at about 2 or 3 out of 10.

Shameful really. I don't think I'm overstating my case when I claim that this is probably one of the most troubling examples of corruption of the media since the invention of the printing press. The government should take action.

I haven't played the game but judging by the review and others' comments, I am pretty confident that this really is 7/10, especially for someone like me who's always loved the puzzle/atmospheric gameplay. i don't want an RE action game and im sure many others here dont too.

This isnt like the terrible RE4 Wii review where the reviewer is practically at odds with everyone else; here we have people who corroborate the review, clearly disappointed with the direction the RE series has taken.

And for that I'm willing to wait for a bargain purchase probably next (given how slowly AAA games devalue.)

Yet to play, but at least with this review the reasons for marking down have been set out, unlike EG's farcical Metal Gear Solid 4 review.

Poor controls, poor AI, too similar to previous game, dated style of play - all fair criticism in marking down a game I'd say. So why the hell did GTA4 and Halo 3 get 10s here?! Hmmmm.

In no way did GTA or Halo have bad controls or bad AI (especially not Halo), so there you go.

Hell they gave the totally unoriginal Killzone 2 a 9 as well, which means it doesn't matter if the template is old, only if it's not passable anymore.

Well, I suppose I did dismiss Dead Space on the basis of the demo and then enjoyed the actual full game. My confidence for a repeat performance is not high, but perhaps I might give Res5 another shot (if its still shit though, I'm blaming you MD).

Sneetch, I agree that the point of a demo is to showcase the game. But if a demo mispresents the game for whatever reason (such as the recent Riddick demo, which reduced the Riddick experience to a mediocre FPS - something the full game is so much more than... assuming it keeps the Butcher Bay feel about it), should we dismiss it on principle? Nose, cut off. Face, spited.
