Good to see the review didn't mention the racism aspect at all, considering its a non issue. Good work EG!

7/10, I was kind of expecting that but at the same time I have no intention of playing this single player so this is still gonna make my week when I get my hands on it. I've got at least three playthroughs planned both online and offline and I anticipate its gonna be epic

I read this as being not a bad game, but not the game you were looking for if you wanted a continuation of Resi 4. I personally wanted that and am not in the market for a co-op game unless its more of the drop in drop out L4D mentality. So its not for me. Not going to run around shouting travesty fie fie fie though.

Looking for dexterous sentient being to play co-op RE5 until all trophies are obtained.

The only thing I'd change to the game would be to put the focus back on the solo player... the controls etc are classic Resi and it'd be more than easy to adapt to that. The game would feel wrong if you were leaping around like Nathan Drake.

I wonder how many people calling this review shit are going to complain after they finish the game in 6 hours. This is not Resi 4, and if you read the review it looks a lot like it on the surface, but they removed a lot that made Resi 4 great as well.

I'm also wondering why the hell the fanboys are up in arms for this one. Some people just live to bitch about every opinion they don't agree with. Go play your gimped game then. I'm glad EG at least have the balls to not give every hyped game a 9/10

I love how the so called "critics" of this review whine about how it starts by mentionning the lack of running and shooting...even though a tiny bit later the reviewer justifies this and says it's not all bad.

I think it was an extremely fair review and honest. 7 is not a bad score from what is looking to be an average rehash at best wrapped in gorgeous visuals and jumping on the sequal bandwagon.

Other games have done this better, personally I thought the demo was awful.

Having said that, there's a theme here, Dead Space, Alone in the Dark, Assassins Creed, Kung fu panda...All 7/10.

Perhaps it's time EG started using percentage scores so we know the difference between a bad 7 and a good 7.

Since Sheva's A.I. is flawed and I intend playing this solo can anyone confirm that the full UK game has Easy, Normal and Hard difficulties like the Japanese version I've seen footage of. I presume playing the game on Easy is one way round the dodgy A.I. and I'd rather complete the game at least once rather than end up frustrated at it because Sheva keeps getting herself killed. What difficulty setting was the demo on... normal?

No mention of the bloody awful tearing that afflicted the 360 demo but wasn't present on the PS3. Does this mean it's been fixed or not? I shall be picking this up for the co-op but I want the better of the two versions and tbh based on the demo the PS3 is the better looking.

Setting you dash on the NXE to 720P on VGA eliminates the tearing almost completely, or at least to the point it becomes negligible.

Hah! I'm not basing my descision to buy this game on one reviewer's opinion; rather on the facts about the game that I can pull from this article, plus my own opinion of the demo.

I'm not interested in another mediocre TPS game like Gears or Mass Effect. I don't like the genre.

And the demo was insanely retarded. My AI (although I use the term "intelligent" very loosely) friend got grabbed by an enemy, and during the short cutscene where I released her, I was unable to avoid a massive axe flying towards me that cleaved me in twain. 20 seconds into the demo. Fun.

To be honest, I didn't like RE4 either, so I'm not quite sure why I was going to buy this in the first place.

My pre-order was cancelled long ago. Everything about it apart from what it's recycled from Resi 4 stinks. Resi in the sun with co-op play? Ooh, I'm scared. And those Redfield muscles... I'll wait for Resi 6 in the hope that they take the franchise more seriously instead of this Carry On Redfield episode, thanks.

After playing the demo it looks (and reads) like EG are being kind, because...well, because it's good ol' Capcom, and this is a big game that could shift consoles in a flat economy.

@nixxrite - You have a point.

Both 66% and 74% are 7/10 but psychologically I'd be less inclined to buy a game rated at 66% than one rated at 74% because it's lower even though it's only 8%. That said, a review is just one person's opinion anyway so should never really be used on its own, rather you take its pros and cons into account along with as many others as you can read before deciding to buy the game. You also play a demo if you can, which Resident Evil 5 had and a rather generous one at that too. After playing the demo, most people would have already made up their minds about whether they were buying the game or not anyway as most of the criticisms that EG pointed out in the review where there to see in that demo.

"With a skilled friend in tow, it's one of the best co-op shooters I've played - at least if you dare to crank up the challenge"

Has the reviewer played Left 4 Dead at all? A game that incidentally lets the player choose which way the screen in split in local co-op (rather than list horizontal split as some kind of positive feature).

@Co-op

First off, 7/10 is not a low score (and higher than this game deserves in my book).

Second, there are plenty of people out there who think this game has some major issues. And the review pointed out those issues. Quite simply the review discussed the positives and negatives of the game, which is exactly what it is supposed to do. This game is not comparable to Halo or Gears of War, and so should get a lower score.

@RamblinSydRumpo - The 360 version of RE5 is optimised for 720p so you should set the 360 to that resolution to minimise the tearing. There is some at 720p but it's very minor from the demo I've played and the numerous videos I've seen. Play it at 1360x768 or 1080p and it's another matter altogether though as you well know. The PS3 version is completely v-synced hence has more frequent framerate drops but lacks any tearing, similar to Fallout 3 actually, which had tearing on the 360 but slowdown and no tearing on the PS3.

If tearing annoys you then you should go for the PS3 version but the demo doesn't support 1080p via scaling, if you disable 720p then the game runs at 576p, although surprisingly it still looks very good at that resolution and isn't noticeably inferior to 720p! The full game might support 1080p though but I'd expect it'll come at the cost of even more framerate drops as the PS3's scalar isn't very good.

Question.

For those of you claiming that EG is a "shitty site" and they have lost all credibility due to this review and how they score other games;

Why don't you just fuck off and read another website?

The demo read like a 7/10 imo, doesnt change the fact that i have the special edition pre-ordered and i am looking forward to playing it. each to their own and all that.

@Nick779 - Different people review different games so while one person might mark a game down for being similar to its predecessor, another might overlook it if the rest of the game is up to scratch. Most sequels show improvements over the previous game so you could argue that a game should be marked down if it doesn't.

Should the controls have been fixed for RE5? Yeah, I think they should but, that said, you do get used them. Sheva's A.I. though is another matter as it needs to be flawless for anyone playing solo and the fact that it isn't means that the game could potentially become very annoying as Mr. Reed pointed out in the review. Co-op gameplay should be a bonus not a workaround for dodgy A.I. I have to admit that I was unable to complete the demos because Sheva kept dying so I'm hoping that playing through the game on Easy will get around that (assuming the difficulty was on Normal for the demo).

Personally, I find this review reasonable in that the score reflects the criticisms made about the game and those criticisms were there for all to see in the demo. EG aren't the first to comment on the clunky controls or the A.I., they've been debated on various forums across the internet since the demos came out, including EG's. How good you deem the final game to be depends on how you got on with the demo's controls and A.I. and/or whether you're playing the game in co-op.

As the saying goes one man's 7/10 game is another man's 9/10 game! ;)

I'm disappointed by this. No puzzles or exploration, no REAL zombies, and no real survival horror either. Survival action more like.

Truthfully, I sorely miss the days of Resi 2, with the fixed camera angles and the slow, lurching zombies and blowing their heads off with a shotgun. Gimme back the REAL Resident Evil.

It is somehow fascinating how the people react to this Resident Evil. Nearly everybody confirms that it is a good game but also states it is "just" a Resident Evil 4. And suddenly everybody complaints.
I mean I would have loved to see something "really new" for RE like 4 was but damn it is probably still a very very good game. And just because it is like the FABULOUS 4 shouldn't rate it down.
We should be more true to ourself and what we destroy by our expectations. We all expected something different but nevertheless I don't see the Vids tricked us in what RE5 would be.
Therefore, we are playing Ego-Shooters OVER and OVER again. Nearly everything stays the same with just some minor generation tweaks to graphics, cover system, interaction etc. like CoD4, Killzone2 or Crysis. Those games got 9th and more and actually the only one I played through was CoD4, and that didn't take long. The others were great but still "just" shooters... at least to me... no matter how I liked the first hours into these many games.

RE5 is far from perfect and I do not want to defend it but most people should appease and see to their own expectations. Because all that is going on right now is just complaining about every little thing in RE5 what is subjectively not liked but could be easily ported to any other game and would result in much lower ratings overall.

Spoke my brain... ^^'

The lack of puzzles is a big disappointment, I agree, but the demo showed that there is still opportunities for exploration to find ammo and weapons. For example, I played the first level of the demo over the weekend and stumbled across a case with a machine-gun in it, something I'd never found before. Also I discovered from a video that you can shoot the electrical boxes from the pylons to stun enemies, again something I didn't come across in the numerous times I've played through the demos. Seems to me that the game may still have lots of secrets and stuff to find, a good excuse for multiple replays. I like the sound of the weapon with infinite ammo too from finishing the game once.

I believe you can even replay earlier levels once you've completed them to stock up on money, ammo and weapons, which I think could be quite useful. Does anyone know if that means all the enemies are back or can you just look around and pick off the ones you missed while collecting all the stuff you overlooked?

I can easily understand this review. I loved Resident Evil 4 and would have it at 9/10 or so. But if you'd taken out the puzzles and exploration it would have dropped like a stone to 7/10 or even lower. Resident Evil 5 sounds just like that except with a dumb AI you're forced to live with AND an excellent co-op mode to even things out. 7/10 it is.

Not surprised based on my demo experience. Edge gave it a 7 this month too, conclusion was that it just feels 'old'.

I loved RE4 all those years ago, but you can't stand still in this industry, and that's exactly what Capcom have done. Actually it's worse, because they've tried to modernise it by making it more action-oriented, while still keeping a control style which suits a slower-paced game. Make up your mind Capcom, survival horror or FPS? The demo felt like neither one thing nor the other.

Plus the AI was a massive pain in the ass, should have had the option to go solo. In RE4 the most annoying bits were when you had to babysit a stupid suicidal Ashley, and the demo felt similar. Co-op might be fun, but frankly there are better co-op games than this.

Not a bad game, but unless you're desperate for things to play I'd rent or wait for a cheap deal.

"Dead Space definitely has the worst controls i've ever experienced in a game"

Wow. In comparing RE5 and DS I found the polar oppostite. In fact I thought the controls in DS were really well thought out. I guess this really is a case of courses for horses :)

I would say in defense of Dead Space, the demo was bobbins. I played it and hated it and took the game off my rental list, and then friends raved about it so I stuck it back on. And I'm glad I did. If you haven't played the full game, I really would give it a rental at least. You could be missing out.

And if you are enjoying Res5 then all power to you. I've been too damn grumpy about it for rather too long. I won't be playing it myself, but if those that do have a good time doing so, I can't really complain about that.

Same can be said of System Shock 2, AvP 1 and Silent Hill. AvP is one fo the scariest games I've ever played (in Marine mode), and it has pretty standard and quick moving FPS controls.

Project Zero is really scary and you can still move whilst shooting the camera. That's not my main problem with RE5, since I still love playing RE4. My issue is the with mandatory co-op and the associated compromises.
