Resident Evil 4 iPhone out now

Yours for a fiver.

As promised, Capcom has released its iPhone and iPod Touch version of the classic Resident Evil 4 on the App Store worldwide.

According to App Advice, the game is actually a port of another, older Japanese mobile phone version. Nevertheless it has impressive enough 3D graphics in the unmistakeable over-the-shoulder view, location-based damage and even a Mercenaries mode.

The controls are pure Resi 4, with an on-screen analogue stick moving Leon or aiming his gun when he stands still.

The game will set you back £4.99 or $7.99, weighs in at a trim 37.3 MB, and it's available right away.

Sounds intriguing - I was expecting this to be a spin off a la Metal Gear Solid Touch.

Having played through RE: Degeneration, I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into this one.

Controls are a bit tricky to start with but, once you get the hang of it, you'll be blasting Los Plagos in the yapper on the fly!

    It looks....a bit crap. TBH.

Ok - it looks like a lazy port of an old mobile game without any of the iPhone's particular abilities being used. It looks like a simplified shooter, probably with a basic and dull plotline. It looks like the controls are awkward and ill-conceived. It looks like the sort of game that, if it didn't have the novelty of coming out on iPhone, we would all think was a bit steaming pile of old shit.

I could be completely wrong of course, it could turn out to be amazing.

To be fair, virtually all Resi games have awkward controls so is hardly a revelation...

No doubt it is a Resi 4 cash-in title but the engine they have used is pretty solid. Its probably worth giving the RE: Degeneration Lite a quick download to see if you can get to grips with the controls scheme. This is basically the same engine with few further graphical improvements.

I think it looks absolutely marvellous, at least for a cash-in.

I'd be very interested to buy this if I had an iPhone or iPod touch.

@ MrED209 - The "chapters" in Degeneration were between 5 and 10 minutes (a good sit down on the loo...) and seemed ideal for short-term mobile gaming.

Can't vouch for RE4 Mobile but would imagine that they have broken up sections of the main game into shorter chapters. Helps avoid the inevitable hand cramps as well...

Christ, I winged about the controls when this was mentioned a while back. But £5 is hard to pretty argue with.

    @Ignatius_Cheese

Yeah this one is broken up into short chapters like Degeneration. However there's only twelve levels and I've reached level 9 and I'm still in the castle so I suspect the game isn't the "full" RE4 at all and will just finish halfway through the console version.
