Resi Evil Wii still for 2007

Not dead. Well, not like that.

Little-discussed Wii survival horror title Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is "still on track for 2007 release" according to Wired's game|life blog, which heard from Capcom in the aftermath of Treasure Island Z's announcement last week.

Details of the Wii Resi are still very sketchy, although there have been suggestions that it borrows sections of the original Resident Evil and allows you to play through them from a Resident Evil 4, over-the-shoulder-style perspective.

The point of Capcom's reiteration of the release date, though, is that the publisher wants it to be clear it has more than one Wii game in development. Indeed, the Capcom spokesperson went on tell Wired that Devil Kings 2 is also in development for the system, and "at least one" other Wii title set to be unveiled "in the next few weeks".

For more on the one we do know things about, check out our Project Treasure Island Z story and gallery, and if you want to know (ever so slightly) more about Umbrella Chronicles, keep an eye on the gamepage.

Good to see there is still life in Capcom after Clover.

The release in 2007 could indicate that they haven't put too much effort into the game. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm more that willing to wait until 2008, to get a perfect RE game.

    @Morztan

Don't think so, when they first showed it a E3 2006 they said they have already been developing it for some time.

I really hope it'll be better than the last Capcom release I played (Lost Planet). And as for "who cares", lots of people care. Plenty of people don't have a 360 or a planned PS3 so some Resi for the Wii will be welcomed by a lot of people. If it's anywhere near the high quality of RE4 it will be fantastic and a must-buy for the console.

Having said that, my 360 hungers for RE5 anyway.

I hope it hurries up - this is the game i got a Wii for!

I'd be happy with a GC Resi4 port with proper widescreen display (scaling looks awful on an LCD tv) like they did for the graphically-inferior PS2 port. Well, throw in a few more polygons too if there's time, but the Wii would seem the ideal hardware for a "definative" RE4 combining the GC graphics with the PS2 enhacements.

"Another game for 8 year olds?"

    err its Resident Evil?
  • Tonka #10 5 years ago

Please don't mess this up. It has huge potential. RE4 would be so sweer on a nunchuck combo.
  • varsas #11 5 years ago

@yellowtruck: You might be waiting sometime considering the Wii's selling so well against the PS3...look what happened to Dragon Quest....
  • Tonka #12 5 years ago

RE5 has been in the works some time now. Do you really think they will move it to the Wii? That said, the first version of RE4 turned into DMC...
  • psychokitten #13 5 years ago

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and Resident Evil 5 are different games, so no RE5 hasn't been moved to the Wii. Could be delayed though, as varsas hints, but last I heard about RE5 it wasn't due till (early?) next year anyway.

As far as I can tell RE:UC will fill some of the caps and give us more info about Umbrella Corp, whereas RE5 will be the next proper sequel.
  • varsas #14 5 years ago

@Tonka: Oops, showing my ignorance there, sorry! I didn't know it had been announced for PS3 since I've not really been following PS3 developments! I don't plan on getting one for a couple of years at least.

Outside of the conventional series numbering, have any of the other Resident Evil games been any good? I feel not but I don't know because I'm not a fan of the series.

What I'm trying to get at is: don't put all your hopes on a title that may not get priority in terms of developing resources over RE5.

Shoot me if I'm wrong though!

  • Wayne #16 5 years ago

Bunglebounce, I think your scepticism is well placed.
I'm expecting a game of 'Survivor' quality and length, not a full on Resi Evil game.

And yeah, Code Veronica was a fantastic game and wasn't part of the 'numbered' games.
  • sharpfish #17 5 years ago

I don't care if they delay Resi 5 if they end up making it "the best game of 2008" or whatever, RE4 is still an amazing game (on gamecube) so much droolage waiting for RE5 (and patiently too, again do it properly Capcom!).

As for this Wii version, might be ok but I hope they don't nerf it too much and make it too gimicky just because they have to use the wiimote. They could basically do an upgrade to RE4 style game (easily doable on the Wii as it was on the slightly inferior Gamecube) and implement the Wiimote perfectly with that over the shoulder viewpoint.

Would be nice to see a full game (like RE4) and not some collection of motion sensing mini-games for once.
  • Matsuo #18 5 years ago

I hope they release more details about the game soon. It's been too long since that trailer. Hopefully this game uses a modified RE4 engine and has equal quality and length as RE4.
That game was highly playable, fun and thrilling. Please don't make it a quick cash-in.

"EDIT: Fucking Resistance ads are screwing up my typing. "

I thought I was the only one. The ads in general are pissing me off anyway, as the site seems to have gotten a whole lot slower and less reliable in the last few weeks since the new ads were put up. The GRAW2 was particularly bad as I recall.

    EG, sort it.

It better not be another goddamn remake of Resi 1 that's all I can say.
  • Nikanoru #23 5 years ago

I'm just praying it won't be another Dead Aim. That game made me vomit blood.

'And as for "who cares", lots of people care.'

Like all those who made it Eurogamer Reader's #1 Game of the Year 2005?

Right, this obviously is going to use the resi-4 engine from the cube. Which looked stunning. 'Sup it up a bit to allow for the extra power, memory, and running from a dvd and it could be something special.

(and that'd account for the short dev time too.. no need to rewrite engine from scratch)

If the ads mess up your typing then you want to use Firefox with Flashblock.

Oh yeah, Res Evil Wii should be well decent - and as mentioned earlier will likely use the Res Evil 4 engine.

    /waiting...
