Resi Evil 4 Wii Edition dated

Nintendo to distribute it and Umbrella Chronicles.

Nintendo has stepped up to distribute the forthcoming Resident Evil titles for Wii.

Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition will be released on 29th June, with Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles simply down for a 2007 release.

Nintendo has some experience here of course, having handled the 2005 release of Resident Evil 4 for GameCube. And having, you know, been a software publisher for the best part of three decades.

What can you expect from the two games? Well, Resi 4 will build on its phenomenal basics with new Wii controls that allow players to wield the knife with the Wiimote as they explore with the Nunchuk. You'll also find the Ada Wong story elements added to the PlayStation 2 release of the game installed in the Wii Edition.

Umbrella Chronicles, meanwhile, is a light-gun-style game that ploughs further into the murky history of the Umbrella Corporation, as players blast their way through locations from Resident Evils 0, 1, 2 and 3 as well as some new ones.

We had a go on both games last week, so you can expect some thoughts soon. In the meantime, er, do a dance?

    /Darth Vada stylee "NNNNOOOOOOOOooooooooo........"

I had heard rumours about that, but i was really hoping they wern't true :(

Still need to know the European price of RE4 Wii though, I think that's what really will be the decider for a lot of people. I already have the game (twice, actually). I'll get this if the price is right.

What can I say, I love me some RE4.
  • jonsaan #3 5 years ago

I've never played RE4, I might just give it a go. Sounds good.
  • redd #4 5 years ago

    it sure looks dated...

I for one are really happy about the Light-gun style. I just love light-guns games and combining that with one of my favorite franchies is just great!

I'm looking forward to the Wii version of Resi 4. Never managed to play it on the Cube, but I did briefly borrow the PS2 version off a friend just to see what it was like. If they get the controls right, it could be a good update.

Screwattack.com recently nominated Resi 4 as their favourite game for the Cube.

    Excellent...
Finally I get to see Ada's missions...
Any other bonusses to be expected?
    Co-op?...Please co-op?
    Mercenary co-op?

    What about a European date??

I know I should assume that June 29th is a Euro date, what with this site being 'Eurogamer' and all, but with the increasing tendency for news articles with news only relative to US readers (the MS 360 repair issue over the disc scractching, for example), with no acknowledgement in the article on the Euro side of certain issues, I'm honestly not sure anymore when news info is regarding us.

    If it's over £25 it's a complete rip-off.
  • JonFE #11 5 years ago

RE4's price is what I'd like to know, too. I already have the Cube version, but will buy the Wii version as well if the price is on the bargain side...
  • pikemon #12 5 years ago

maybe i'll get hooked to the mercenaries mode this time around. i'm certainly looking forward to seeing how the controls work on wii compared to gamecube.

(won't be buying this for full price though)

Resident Evil 4 was easily the best game of 2006, hopefully more people will play it now when it's released on Wii. Even on Gamecube it had increadible graphics and great gameplay.

The guys over at eg.de say it's the same version as the PS2. No other bonuses. But there are rumours that it will be cheaper than your normal Wii game.
    Cheap(er) RE4 + good Wii control = winner!

Edit: The same game as PS2 content-wise, but with minor technical overhaul.

It's a shame that the Wiimote doesn't really work as a light-gun - I had high hopes that the Wii could save the gun-game from death by flat-panel.
Perhaps a point-at-each-corner calibration screen could help, but based on the woeful inaccuracy of aiming in TLoZ:TP (which does have some extra calibration bits), I'm not optimistic =(

Yeah, I read somewhere that it'll have proper widescreen support this time 'round as well...
I just wanted something even better...

I've found the "light gun" aiming in TWP and Wii Play to be pretty accurate...
  • ryohazuki1983 #18 5 years ago

cool, light gun RE, hope its good, also looking forward to playing RE4 with wiimote!

Wait, is RE4 going to be full-priced? That's a bit absurd, isn't it - it's just a port of a 2005 game with added controls. I love Capcom and all, but...
  • agparrot #20 5 years ago

I thought it was gamecube exclusive?
  • Nithron #21 5 years ago

They could have at least added some *new* content, surely? We all saw how fast they cranked out that new stuff for the PS2 release.
I mean, not even some new skins? Or some new Mercenaries characters?
    How about a Wesker sidestory?
Sometimes, Capcom, i doubt your commitment to our relationship.

To be fair you could say that about most of EAs output. The new Burnout is a prime example.

The on rails shooting sections of Rayman: Raving rabbids worked a treat so i can't see why Capcom would mess up...

Personally I thought Resi 4 on the GC was awful. For me Resi was about wandering around solving puzzles etc - not bashing zombies. If I wanna kill zombies I can play Dead Rising !

It may as well be yet another FPS now !
  • monkie_king #25 5 years ago

varsas, sure, it's usable, but only because you have a cross-hair on screen. You more or less play by using the Wiimote to drag the "pointer" over whatever you want to shoot. If you actually look along the Wiimote's axis, you'll find that it doesn't really correspond closely to where the crosshair appears on screen (especially vertically).

Contrast that with, say, Point Blank or Time Crisis with a GunCon. You hit *exactly* where the gun is actually pointing, no need for the crosshair, and this allows you to aim rapidly and instinctively, without relying on the visual feedback of the crosshair. I've played a lot of Wii Play shooting, and an enormous amount of Point Blank, and I really find the Wiimote a poor substitute.

I'd love to be proved wrong though, since arcade-style gun games are one of the best things ever, and have more or less died out with CRT TVs. Hopefully the Wiimote can be made to shoot straight through some extra pre-game calibration. Red Steel doesn't bode well, however.
  • Obsequious #26 5 years ago

Leaving the amazing combat system aside, Resi 4 was probably the least scary survival horror of all time. Compared to something like Silent Hill 3, a game in which at times the atmosphere was so utterly overwhelming that I had to stop playing, it just seemed a bit..lightweight.

Still brilliantly shallow fun though, mind.
  • varsas #27 5 years ago

Royal Fool:I'm pretty sure that it's been reported that the game will be budget priced?

monkie_king: Point taken. Some sort of calibration would probably help, as you pointed out earlier. Wasn't there a gun attachment for the Wiimote touted before it's release?

Obsequious: The RE games have never been as scary as the SH games...

  • Obsequious #28 5 years ago

Thanks for that. I was making a general commentary on the game itself, as several others in the thread have, but fuck you very much nonetheless.
  • Popzeus #29 5 years ago

I suddenly feel really smug about never having played this game. You lot can grumble all you like, but I've got a killer Wii app to look forward to now :D
  • Tonka #30 5 years ago

We had a go on both games last week, so you can expect some thoughts soon.

Yes please. What I'm really curious about is your thoughts on Treasure island Z

    "

It's going to be released at budget price, $30 in the US, so I'd guess twenty quid over here.
  • Rash' #32 5 years ago

I want to get excited about these games, but one's a light gun game and the others a retread of a two year old title with new controls. Hardly the innovative gameplay I was expecting when I purchased my Wii. I'll wait for the reviews.

  • AcidSnake #34 5 years ago

No discontent here...I love the shiny white box....
  • varsas #35 5 years ago

Obsequious: Where did that come from...? My point was that you stated RE4 as the least scary survival horror ever but use the example of the most scary survival horror as a comparison. Your point would be more valid if you gave an example of a not so scary survival horror that RE4 still can't compare to...

  • soanso #37 5 years ago

Nintendo dealt with the GC release of Resi4.
It was a shambles. It took me about 2 months to find a copy. OK maybe I should have preordered it but at the time the last thing I'd preordered didn't come out. I got fed up with ordering things or having to pay money up front for stuff.

I had a similar problem finding a copy of Another Code and from reading about Wii shortages I'm still expecting Nintendo to be crap at getting discs (or cards) into shops.
  • Vice.Destroyer #38 5 years ago

It sounds like a cool little game, something that my girlfriend might enjoy. (She is a librarian, so she needs to release some tension), but I still can't buy a bloody Wii.

    Nintendo, sort it out.
  • Nikanoru #39 5 years ago

how to stick a nail in the Wii
release RE4 that was perfectly brilliant on the GC

    Hahahaha what the fuck?

    Oh wait, it's you.
  • Bulbatron #40 5 years ago

Will it be possible to play this new Wii edition of Resident Evil 4 with a GameCube controller, or at the least, the Wii classic controller? I know the obvious answer to that is 'Why don't you just play the GameCube version then?', but the GameCube version doesn't have true widescreen or any of the extras found in the PlayStation 2 version.

I can't decide what to think about Umbrella Chronicles. It seems a bit like the Survivor games - plus, like Resident Evil - Survivor 2 - Code: Veronica, it actually revisits locations from previous games. I wonder how strong the story will be.

Great news. I never had a GC, and I cant find a copy of the GC version to play on the Wii anyway. This with the shooting and slashing thing should be great by all accounts.

I had little trouble aiming in zelda. It doesnt aim down the line of the wiimote, it aims relative to where you point from teh sensor bar. Once you understand, this happy days - although of course we will have to see if they implement it well or not...
