Resi 5 will sell over 3 million, says Capcom

SFIV will do half that, apparently.

Capcom has been busy estimating how well its forthcoming games are going to sell. .

As reported by Kotaku, the company reckons around 3.2 million copies of Resident Evil 5 will be shifted after the game is released next March.

Street Fighter IV sales are predicted to be a more modest 1.7 million, while they're putting the figure for Bionic Commando at 1.5 million. Dead Rising for Wii sales will reach 500,000, reckons Capcom. Bold.

Anyone for a sweepstake?

They are probably right. They tend to know this sort of thing pretty well.
  • dr_faulk #2 3 years ago

You can count me as one of those 3 million, for deffo!
  • Thunderbolt #3 3 years ago

With better controls for R5 you've got a sale, I mean come one how hard is it to run and shoot?

I know they are trying to build tension but it just ends up being awkward.

I would prefer Streetfighter to sell 3 miilion though
  • StooMonster #4 3 years ago

But which version to get? PS3, 360 or PC?
  • Zomoniac #5 3 years ago

"we will sell 4.5 million copies of games from the early 1990s with different camera angles and shiny graphics"
  • Buztafen #6 3 years ago

Thunderbolt! - You do much running and gunning in real life? I reckon it'll be a little harder than you think. If your going full pelt your not gonna be able to hit anything for shit....i'd rather have the tension...
  • Goodfella #7 3 years ago

Damn right. What is with these people who insist games should be how THEY want them. If you want to run and gun play CoD4. This is Resident Evil and it does it's own thing.
  • vpin #8 3 years ago

@Buztafen: It's a freakin' video game not real life. I want my games to be fun, surely they can make it run and gun without losing the tension?

edited to clarify who the heck I was talking to!

...and a second time for spelling

Then surely you do what many other games do, and make it so that shooting while running is less accurate. It worked for Dead Space. You can pass it off as "tradition" if you want, but rooting the player to the spot just because they've drawn their weapon just looks silly in 2008.

    Buztafen

LOL, then I'm not a STARS Alpha team special agent!

Surely they can teach you to run and gun in the army? ;)

    Edit: Thanks Dan

1.5m for Bionic commando? Seems slightly unrealistic although I hope it sells that many.

Street Fighter IV sales are pretty low too - the fanfare for it at the Expo was very impressive - or was it just the hardcore?
  • asphaltcowboy #12 3 years ago

Well, I'll be getting Res5, Bionic Commando AND SFIV so... there :p
  • iago71 #13 3 years ago

Hmmmm I dunno...... Sure Res 5 will shift loads but Id say that figure for SF IV is a little low.... Though I just play the games and know nothing about selling them, so what do I know??? :)
  • Darren #14 3 years ago

Want Resident Evil 5, don't especially want SFIV so maybe Capcom are right about the latter selling half as many units! :)
  • Shakey_Jake33 #15 3 years ago

I feel 1.7m for SF4 is awfully optomistic though, the brand has very little pull outside fighting game fans I reckon, which is a shrinking genre itself.
  • Kami #16 3 years ago

That said, Street Fighter is more of a name to be reckoned with than Tekken and Soul Calibur and the like.

Predicted sales targets are the future. But I hope SF does better than that!
  • Gnort #17 3 years ago

I don't think SF4 will sell any more copies than Soul Calibur 4 did or Tekken 6 will. Seeing as I have no idea how much that is / will be, I can't comment on Capcom's prediction, but I don't think it will find a lot of success outside of dedicated fighting game fans. The people who do want it will be rabid in their devotion, so it will probably seem very popular on message boards, at expos and things like that.
  • CallousB #18 3 years ago

They are overestimating Dead Rising Wii...even at only 500k.

I love zombie games but I can't see myself (or many others) wasting money on that half assed port...not when "House of the Dead Overkill" is out around the same time.

Probably underestimating Resident Evil 5......and overestimating Bionic Commando + SF4.
  • miiiguel #19 3 years ago

Dont't find the numbers too unrealistic, but..., Bionic Comando 1.5 seems a bit optimistic.
  • muscleblade #20 3 years ago

I think their prediction seems spot on. Im buying SF4, RE5 and BC for sure. Capcom is my favourite developer.
  • Duckula #21 3 years ago

Just hurry up and bloody release it!

E Honda saying i,ll flaten ya! in a american accent sounds awful its like virtua fighter all over again!
  • Santino #23 3 years ago

definitely picking up street fighter 4, not convinced with resi 5 yet though, especially since finding out there is another character playing through with you the whole time.
  • bad09 #24 3 years ago

I'll be brutally honest, I'm really hoping RE5 bombs.

See I REALLY miss Resident Evil games and want some next gen ones, with some actual atmosphere and, you know, ZOMBIES! If this one fails they might actually rethink their reboot as it's going in a direction I don't really feel for, especially after seeing 5 play at the expo confirmed my fears (plenty of arcade shooters already Mr Capcom!).

I know this won't happen though and RE5 will sell 3 million, sadly many seem to prefer the RE4 arcade style gameplay. Shame that, real shame....

"especially since finding out there is another character playing through with you the whole time"

That shouldnt be a negative. Games tend to be a lot better with a friend playing by your side. If you prefer to play alone with the AI partner i dont understand why.
  • bad09 #26 3 years ago

    @ muscleblade

Playing with a friend is good in most cases true, but it's not the sort of thing many people wanted in a RE game. I know I my heart sank when I first heard it was gonna be a MP shooter :(
  • dingo75 #27 3 years ago

    @muscleblade:
My real life friends don't play games so I would have resort to random noobs on the internet and sadly most are retards.
I want my games to be fullfiling in single player. Any decent multiplayer is nice to have but I don't play many of them anyways (DoD and TF2 only for now. Before that UT and UT2004).
  • Feanor #28 3 years ago

The gameplay videos of Resi 5 look anything but silly. People who want every third-person shooter to play exactly the same way are funny.

I love Resident Evil. 0, 1, 2, 3, CV, 4. 4 is one of my favouritist games ever, 1 close behind. I do tend to distinguish them in my head, as if they were different brands, but sod it, both were flipping awesome, and I hope RE5 is too.
  • Santino #30 3 years ago

    @muscleblade,

i do enjoy playing co-op shooters (finished gears 2 yesterday with my mate was good fun!) but there are loads of games that provide that and i want resi to maintain some sense of fear and an AI partner will change the tone of the game in a big way. not to mention AI partners are usually pretty bad unless they are call alyx vance!

probably going to open a can of worms here but another factor in my mind is the controls, after playing resi 4 with pointer analogue sticks will probably feel like a step back.
  • VMerken #31 3 years ago

I see the Controls and Olde Stylez whimpering is still in full effect. No reason for me to hold it in, then.

Controls whimperers: the day Capcom decides run'n'gun has to be in RE is the day the game actually needs it.

Olde Stylez whimperers: the New Stylez is actually the Olde Stylez, but with parasite controlled enemies instead of virus mutated enemies. Now if you're willing to look past that difference, all the other elements are there for your enjoyment. If you can't hurl yourself past that, well, there are tons of other games out there.

Oh, and there have never been Zombies in this series. Virus mutated or parasite controlled enemies, yes, true Undead, no.
  • bad09 #32 3 years ago

    VMerken

"Olde Stylez" like me don't care about the crappy new story. We want ATMOSPHERE - given with cinematic flare of FIXED cameras (do the work yourself guys!), puzzles, lack of ammo, Umbrella, Labs, ZOMBIES (or T-virus, whatever man!), being scared! I WANT RESIDENT EVIL DAMMIT! :)

I dunno, watching Saddam lookalikes lumbering towards me as some fit bird helps out as I snipe 'em in a arcade shooter is a little less scary than zombies/hunters/Tryants/Killer Sharks crying for my brains as I'm alone in a mansion/lab/city/underground tram system in pre-rendered backgrounds with 2 shotgun rounds and no health....;)

I have a feeling Bionic Commando's estimated is extremely off the scale. As much as I'm sure the cultists of this series would like to see it succeed, I have much doubt that it will reach that figure. If the game is good enough then, perhaps.

Street Fighter I hope sells more, its name is world renown, and sticking Chun-Li on the cover is a smart move for the mainstream old skool, just get those TV and internet ads rolling Capcom!

    Resdient Evil 5...no problem.

Dead Rising, hmmm, looks more like a 'safe' figure to me.

  • spacedmonkeys #34 3 years ago

Hated all Resident Evil games until RE4 came out. Hated the pathetic stupid fixed cameras and constantly swapping controller directions. Loved RE4 in fact one of my favourite most compelling and addictive games ever. Played it through a few times. Really cannot wait for RE5, it cant come quick enough.
  • HammyWammy #35 3 years ago

I'm not bothered with RE5 & Dead rising as they are ports & the hype for them went out the window after they were released 1st time round. SF4 is something to go mad about but not when it gets ported a year later. duh!
