Resi 5 details emerge

Brainssss.

New details for Resident Evil 5 have emerged this afternoon, a bit like a zombie clambering out from its mossy grave.

The information comes from the mouth of producer Jun Takeuchi, who sat down with Japanese magazine Famitsu to talk about the game (translated by IGN).

Action this time takes place in what appears to be an African or desert village, where our hero Chris is soon dispatched to investigate mysterious goings on. Once there he promptly bumps into a new type of enemy with considerably more brainpower than your traditional zombie. Takeuchi also tells us to expect an appearance from a girl fans of the series will recognise - who has a sizeable part to play in both the story and gameplay.

Resident Evil 5 will be played from largely the same perspective as the excellent fourth instalment, with Chris on the left of the screen. But apparently there's also a big surprise addition here that Takeuchi believes is an obvious step in the series' evolution. You'll kick yourselves.

Light will play a large part in the new game, too, making entering dark buildings from bright outside environments (and vice versa) a serious consideration when factoring in the time it takes for your eyes to adjust to each new setting.

But unfortunately there's still no more news on when we can expect the game, just a general date of 2008.

Pop over to Eurogamer TV to see the new Resident Evil 5 E3 trailer.

So are we talking two player co-op with someone on the right-hand side of the screen?

First person perspective? To be honest, I hope it's something more than that. Resi 4 worked pretty perfectly imho and I'd hate for this to become just another FPS.

If that is done right that could be one scary addition, hearing something in the dark and knowing it's close by but not able to see it until your eyes adjust.

    Lol! Good one.
  • andromeda #5 5 years ago

hhhm..its gotta be a step towards an fp perspective..i actually hope this is the case as it would make the game more immersive

in fact, ALL GAMES SHOULD HAVE FORCED FIRST PERSON PERSPECTIVE FOR IMMERSION REASONS ALONE!
  • Hog-lumps #6 5 years ago

maybe its a pet zombie dog?

Why will we kick ourselves? Am I misreading the article?
  • AcidSnake #8 5 years ago

    It's Sherry I'd think...

The obvious progression ofcourse means that Ada is pregnant...
    With Wesker's demon child...
  • Universal_Hamster #9 5 years ago

Will there be a "Squint" button?
  • Tomo #10 5 years ago

Good God. I'm frothing and it's the tiniest bit of information ever.

    Co-op would be awesome tho.
  • spongebob #11 5 years ago

Scenario sounds good to me. Resident Evil 6 to Haiti & Voodoo, thanks.

Claire and Chris reunited, Ada already over exposed on Res Evil 4, we have seen quite a bit of Jill but nothing of Claire since Code Veronica.

Clare and Chris Redfield mean will there be co op element as per Inspirius suggestion?! Kick ourselves? Come out with it.
  • psychokitten #14 5 years ago

    Those are too obvious.
I'm calling it. Sherry Birkin. Mark my words.

    [edit]Damn you, AcidSnake!

I thought Sherry Birkin two, but it's probably just because they used the word 'girl' which makes you thing of a young girl.
  • psychokitten #16 5 years ago

I'm thinking more based on the RE3: Nemesis epilogue and then Wesker's Report (in which Wesker says Sherry is "safe in our hands";). The way he says fans of the series will know her gives me the impression we aren't talking about Claire or Jill, they were both main playable characters so *everyone* remembers them.

Is the new feature the ability to move and fire at the same time?

"Is the new feature the ability to move and fire at the same time?"

I hope not. I loved the controls in RE4. All I would wanted added would be side rolls. That'd be handy.

Tvirus launcher... fires high pressure syringes filled with the Tvirus and force mutates one of the locals into a vicious zombie killing machine. Perfect for crowd control.

Orrrr Chris uses the Tvirus to gain more than superhuman skillllz.

    Or FP perspective... or co-op.

    OR more zombies

    OR the addition of vehicles...

OR small zombie badgers that bite your ankles?

OR streets of rage styleee support attacks - airstrike!

    The big twist?

Its all just a wet dream. Not a very erotic one, mind but still....

That's what they said about RE4 as well but outside the scripted sequences, they barely showed any intelligence whatsoever.

"That's what they said about RE4 as well but outside the scripted sequences, they barely showed any intelligence whatsoever."

I know. I repeatedly tried to engage them in conversation debating the merits of free enterprise in emerging markets but all they were interested in was Big Brother. No intelligence whatsoever.

I'd say it was Sherry Birkin as well. I was hoping to be the first person to say that, so that I'd look really clever. How old would she be by now? If I remember rightly, Resident Evil 2 was in 1998. Resident Evil 4 was in 2004 I think. So I wonder when Resident Evil 5 will be set. If it is Sherry, she won't be a little girl anymore.

I wonder if they will keep the 'panic' moments during cut-scenes. I did't mind them all that much when in the game itself, but when they cropped up during cutscenes it was really annoying.

I found it very difficult to concentrate on what Krauser was saying when I could just get stabbed and 'insta-killed' if I wasn't quite quick enough.

Thank Heavens for the PlayStation 2 version, so I could watch the scene from the movie viewer.

Perhaps for Resident Evil 5, they could make this feature optional, so that those who liked it more than me would still have it.
  • Triggerhappytel #26 5 years ago

Online co-op would be the nuts, please :)

PS - I don't think anyone's mentioned this, perhaps the girl could be Rebecca Chambers. She instantly sprung to mind, but she has had a starring role not long ago.

Not even close to being true.
  • Malek86 #28 5 years ago

Seems pretty obvious it will be Sherry.

I'm not fond of desert scenarios. Too much yellow around.
  • Kami #29 5 years ago

A bit like Ada in RE4, it's pretty obvious it's likely to be Sherry. And she is important, remember she was given a nice treat by her father (assuming RE5 follows the canon), and was left in military care. Sherry isn't just going to be grown up, I would say she's got every right to be royally pissed off.

As for surprise, I'll let them work on that, but so echoing the trigger moments. Not in cutscenes Capcom. That was just a pain in the ass...
  • Edwannawonga #30 5 years ago

Um, don't know if it's just me or the ambiguity of the article but when it said "big surprise addition here that Takeuchi believes is an obvious step in the series' evolution. You'll kick yourselves."
I thought it was answered in the following paragraph about light affecting vision.

Please tell me if I read it wrong, or is there another surprise?
  • Artemus #31 5 years ago

    Bring Barry back!
  • Zoro #32 5 years ago

Sherry has no relation with Chris, has she? My money's on Jill or Rebecca.
  • The-Bodybuilder #33 5 years ago

I doubt Sherry will be back.
I mean, sherry bobbings died when she went through the engine of that plane. You know, when she was floating away with her umberella?

    ella....ella.. eh....eh.....eh.

  • Machetazo #34 5 years ago

ah, close, Zoro got in first with my guess, Rebecca Chambers. Medics come in pretty handy out in african desert settlements, you might venture. ;)
  • Kami #35 5 years ago

"Sherry has no relation with Chris, has she? My money's on Jill or Rebecca."

Sherry was rescued and for a time looked after by Claire, who is Chris' sister. And we don't know what happened after Claire got back from Antarctica, could have kept in touch with Sherry - they did bond, after all. It's not much of a leap to assume it'll be Sherry.

However, purely because I'd like to see a grown-up Sherry with superpowers from her little escapade in Raccoon City, I'd prefer to see Sherry standalone in her own Resi title...
  • mr_chimp #36 5 years ago

Sidestep, I'd guess, since I kick myself every time I do it while on another stealthy beer run.
  • citizenHUNTER #37 5 years ago

Edwannawonga, I read it that way too.

I've not been fussed by Resident Evil since ust being annoyed with the awful clunky controls and masochistic levels of ammo you were given... Ive not played RE4 though I want to since it sounded like such an advancement, if not complete overhaul of what these games are... and of course the survival horror thing would excite me, once actually done well... I have high hopes this might be the first RE game I've played in years, and also the one I come closest to actually completing for a change. Woo next gen! And I personally quite like the setting, only so many misty towns or old mansions you can handle ffs.
  • Matsuo #38 5 years ago

this game is supposed to be targeted as a post-2009 release. That's like... holy cow, what a long wait! It's about the same time they took to develop RE4 though, so I suppose that's a good thing.
Well, while we wait for a true successor Im happily replaying the Wii edition of RE4 and Im looking forward to RE:UC as well. Hopefully they'll churn out a side story on Wii as well with an updated RE4/RE:UC engine for Wii to keep us occupied.

Im interested in this title. I like the setting as well.
  • GamesConnoisseur #39 5 years ago

Guess re girl's identity may be useful but rereading the article, the emphasis on the 'big suprise addition' was made NOT in relation to the girl but rather after stating with Chris being on the left of the screen...
    So therefore..?

Other thing would it be possible for them to include all the main players from the whole series in this instalement? Bringing together all the various loose strands? Letting you pick which of the two co-operating characters for each certain level?

Put us out of our miseries pleaaassee!
  • Kami #40 5 years ago

If they remade RE2 and 3 in the style of RE4 - or even just like the gloosy 'Cube Resi's - I'd streak down the middle of London wearing nothing but a wolly cap and a pair of knitted socks.* Maybe. If the weather was right. And hell had frozen over.

Seriously, I'd love to see that. Resi 3 in particular, but RE2 not an inch behind. The first remake was sublime, to get perhaps new angles or places to explore or advance on things a little better, I'd give my left leg for such remakes.

    * I take no responsibility for the mental distress any images you conjure up inflict.
  • Paukl #41 5 years ago

Mazybe the new feature is zombies or whatever coming up behind you, and your character having to turn round to face the camera to fight them off?

    Or not, whatever.
  • NegativeZero #42 5 years ago

A big surprise addition? Maybe the ability to move while holding your gun? That always took me right out of the game, even in RE4. The inability to even step backwards while aiming a gun really irritates me. It's the primary reason why I can never play them for more than an hour or two without giving up in frustration.
  • Bulbatron #43 5 years ago

Kami, if they did what lavalant suggested, I'd streak down my leg - THEN streak down the middle of the high-street! :-)
  • Nithron #44 5 years ago

I don't care who the girl is, I just want RE4's Merchant to be in it.

Oh, and Nicholai from RE3. Whatever happened to him, eh? He was always cooler than this wesker twat..
  • VMerken #45 5 years ago

Given the development history of Resident Evil 4 and the given timing, this is way too early to speculate about anything - who knows, next year there might be a new hookman version. At the very least Chris is now a confirmed main character (remember all those discussions on the first trailer, "Is that Chris or Carlos or Billy or Wesker?", while it was obvious that it was Chris? ;) and hopefully it will stay that way as Chris is a personal favourite as far as RE characters go. There's also no real need to speculate on who the girl will be because a more extended trailer comes soon where we'll catch a glimpse of her.

Heck, mystery girl might be Elza Walker, even.

At this point, I'm just thrilled by the videos shown so far. It looks awesome, and the change of setting is great. If RE5 can 1up its stellar predecessor, then playing the waiting game is something I'll gladly do.
