Relentless working on non-Buzz game

Currently hiring for "Secret Project #1".

Brighton-based Relentless Software is working on a new game that it plans to self-publish, according to a job posting on the company's website.

"Despite the current economic crisis, we're pleased to say that we're still hiring," the developer wrote yesterday.

"We have some open positions for our future Buzz! titles and we're also hiring for our self-published Secret Project, more news of which in the coming months."

Relentless is best known for the Buzz! quiz titles, which it produces for PlayStation formats as part of an exclusive agreement with Sony.

However, it does list its Secret Project on a separate page of the site, sporting blurred images.

"Sony keep us very busy with our Buzz projects but there's something bubbling under at Relentless Towers. We've taken everything we've learned about making social games and the result is what, for the time being, is known as Secret Project #1," it says.

Relentless told Eurogamer today that it is not planning to release any more information for the moment.

The fact they claim to be publishing themselves suggests to me this will be a PSN and/or XBLA title, since they don't really have the capacity to publish a proper, big game.

    Yes, it's either:

    a) not very good if Sony aren't publishing it (given their relationship)
    b) a downloadable game, most likely XBLA or WiiWare if it's self published (and not PSN)

    >"Not very good if Sony aren't publishing it (given their relationship)"

Have you thought that it might actually be rather brilliant and so rather than rely on Sony to take the financial risk (and any reward) Relentless are confident enough to put their own money behind it?

"Why would you say not PSN when they have PS3 development history and not the other 2 platforms?"

Because PSN games normally require a proper publisher. Even Popcap's games are getting published by Sony Online Entertainment rather than being self-published like on XBLA.

Yes, I thought of that and decided it was highly unlikely. Given their long-term relationship with Sony, if they came up with a really good idea, Sony would do anything they could to secure it.

The studio is to self-publish the title, although it looks as if it will remain close working relationships with Sony – an ad for staff for the project features the PlayStation Network logo

I haven't checked it out, feels wrong to look at other company's job pages whilst at work!

I oversee the production of all games here at Relentless. Contrary to some of the comments above, we are genuinely kept really busy with our Sony-published games. It's great to have their continued support. We also really appreciate that Sony have been cool enough to allow us to experiment with self-publishing; it's a business model which is of interest to a lot of developers like us.

For the record, the game is not something we've ever pitched to Sony.

All self-published titles deserve a look. There is an element of freedom and expression that isn't always possible or practical with publisher restraints. Naturally there is also an element of financial and marketing risk coupled with less support (QA especially) without a publisher but considering how the industry is evolving (which at sometimes seems to be in parallels with the film industry) with more possibilities to promote and nurture independent studios; developers who self-publish will be finding it is certainly worth the risk.

That and self-published games usually encourage tighter and more highly motivated teams which may result in a more personal, involving and enjoyable game.
